Thank you one and all. I tried to post a response earlier but my computer ate it. Carla, that is a beautiful rose and you're so sweet to post. Jon, I'll take one rainy day with you over a hundred sunny summer days without. Zeffy, isn't that Lavendar Lassie pretty? And I'm glad to read you're feeling a little bitter. Gean, my Buff Beauty has been a disappointment but now I will aspire to have one as pretty as yours, thanks Patricia, I'll obey any "order" that requires kissing my pugs and thank you for the kind words Sue, I'll just go and give 'em another round of smooches :-) LA I said what I meant and I meant what I said--you have a painter's eye Rosefully, I smiled at my garden but the weeds winked back. Hmmmm. Carol, give that Beau a kiss for me (someone else has to be playing loose with the pooches) and I bet your garden is as beautiful as ever and yes, Joe is perfect Olga, ten, yes, ten decrepit pugs in varying stages of decay (we rescue them that way) and they are delightful and amusing at all times except when food or the whiff of it is around and then they turn into fuzzy, near-sighted, short-snouted jackals. Barbara, since I hear it lowers the blood pressure I will pat them as well as smooch them Pam, another gorgeous vista from your garden. Thank you everybody! Sorry for not responding sooner but I usually spend my birthdays locked in my bedroom, with the shades drawn, crying about my lost youth. This year I managed enough energy to treat myself to a movie (Julie & Julia). Movie was wonderful. I'm a big fan of the late Julia Child (yes I'm planning on getting the rose - as soon as it is offered own root) and Meryl Streep did a fantastic job. One of the reasons why I like Julia Child so much (other than that incredible voice and visual presence) is because she didn't start her cooking career until her forties. I turned 43 yesterday, so seeing a reenactment of her life really picked up my spirits. In honor of Julia I made her Queen of Sheeba chocolate cake (OMG it was G-O-O-D!!!). Rob put the candles on a sang happy birthday to me. Yes I cried a little. Hey, I'm allowed. Honestly, this was one of the more trying birthdays. My mother and I had a terrible fight last month and she disowned me - AGAIN. Neither she or my sister called yesterday. As for the digital camera. I finally got it. Rob gave me one for X-Mas, but I've been too chicken to open it. Frankly, I'm intimidated. It is one of the big, fancy models designed for photography and cost more than I'd like to admit. Rob isn't too thrilled with my laziness. I've promised him that I at least will open the package this weekend. Wish me luck. Best wishes, Patrick

Dear Pam and all. I think this is the first year it actually brought tears to my eyes. Just having met so many loveable people in one place--the place they all warn you about(the wwweb) and have them turn out to be my dearest ones even to this day. It has been a pleasure and a joy to have all of you for company here, in the garden and the various other places, subways with Joseph,the hills of South Carolina and pizza with Paul,so many gardens with Paula and Pam, warm Miller light in Rozanna's back porch at 9 in the morning, late night dinner with Joe and Kate and mucho poetry with Jon. We've had so much fun all this time, haven't we with the roses, so much love passed around. Amazing and glorious, Kate you had the best sense of smell being pug trained so that you didn't have to bury that elegant nose of yours. Christina, thank you for remembering me. Blend guy I've loved every moment of it. Thanks Paul, it all came out as you wished. Jon, I can't think of any inspiring I've done unless we're counting a small amount of addiction advocation I may have inadvertantly participated in. Everything else, Fang made me do. How kind of you, Melissa, who brought us gardening in Italy. Randy I find myself more eager to see your lilies bloom than my own. You mustn't tease me with Nur Mahal, what a little beauty. Sherry that is a beautiful Madame Caroline and Thank you. Joe you are welcome any time. Florence, gorgeous and heartwarming as always. Lori she is one of my very favorites as well, one bloom her whole first year, fingers crossed. Thank you. Thank you everyone very much.

My fiance made me chocolate croissants and strawberry yogurt for breakfast.

For dinner, she's planning on orechhiette pasta with a sausage-fennel-pistachio cream sauce. She's already made the dessert: tiramisu.

And I have all you friends. I do, indeed, have everything I want. I'm one lucky guy.

It wasn't that bad getting the "treats" here. Williams-Sonoma shipped them very quickly and very cheaply. They're the chocolate croissants that Oprah says is one of the "best things she can buy".

Also, fyi, the orechhiette pasta with a sausage-fennel-pistachio cream sauce is my recipe:

Orecchiette with a Sausage and Pistachio Cream Sauce

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

1 pound pasta (farfalle, penne, orecchiette)
1/2 pound mild Italian sausage, skinned
2 Tbs butter
1 small onion, sliced thinly
1/2 small bulb fennel, sliced very thin
1-1/4 cup heavy cream
2 Tbs mascarpone cheese
1 Tbs grated parmesan
1/4 cup chopped pistachios
salt and white pepper to taste

Directions

Put on pasta water to boil.

Cook crumbled sausage in skillet until done but not overly browned. You can mop up the drippings now if you donÂt want this dish overly oily.

Add butter, onion and fennel and cook until soft.

Add heavy cream and cook on medium heat to reduce by 1/3.

Add mascarpone, parmesan and pistachio and stir until mascarpone and parmesan become creamy with the sauce.

Season.

Add cooked pasta and toss well.

Garnish with fennel leaf.
