Oh wow, sorry I am so late reading this post. The days just aren't long enough even with the longer daylight days, LOL. I guess you all know how much I love pink roses, thanks so much. Krista you know I adore that rose, I can smell her from here. UMMMMM, good. Duchess is that a hellebore? Wonderful plant. I have one I planted last year. As soon as the snow melts enough on that side of the house I am hoping to find it thrived. Carol, yes my birthday was the 9th, I think I made a mistake when I did my profile years ago. I am still 39 though, LOL. Florence your pictures always make me smile, they always seem to contain sunshine. Celeste, lilacs are sent from heaven, I love them, that fragrance is divine. Hamp, Buddy is wonderful, still the main man in my life. I got him a baby sister a couple of weeks ago. I little black cat, 6 months old, named her Sissy as she is Buddy's baby sister. They adore each other. Judith, someday we are gonna meet in person and I will personally give you a tour of my little yard and we will sniff roses together. Jackie thank you for the great pic, I love it. He is a gorgeous rose. Pugwash is great. I love it here and my little garden is growing all the time with new additions. Judith, I thank you so much for your kind words and we are keeping a few that have been able to cope on their own, but all the burdens of rosegrowing which we have experienced over the past few years have naturally pared the garden way back. We have had our share of RMV,the ravages of RRD, a myriad of fungi and insects, a blight that killed most of the Noisettes, and in the past few years, such very late and hard freezes in late spring that pruned some roses so far back, they never rebounded, so the garden began to look pathetic, and we knew we were not going to be able to maintain the laborious physical and monetary schedule we had, in the past, while acquiring so many roses and maintaining them. We needed a gardener 2-3 days per week, and sometimes more often, lots of fertilizer, pruning, using chemicals and our water bill was rivaling that of the national debt. We are slowly replacing our losses with a few evergreens, conifers, deciduous ornamental small trees and some lovely ornamental shrubs, e.g., camellias, tea olives, gardenias, etc. We still have many climbers and ramblers remaining, enough so that we will have a beautiful late April/early May show. We still love roses as much as ever and I love coming here to see what everyone else is doing but in our area secondary to the condition alluded to above, it is, unfortunately, a decision we did not come to lightly but growing and caring for hundreds of roses is a love we must leave to others.

Jon, I'll take one rainy day with you over a hundred sunny summer days without. Zeffy, isn't that Lavendar Lassie pretty? And I'm glad to read you're feeling a little bitter. Gean, my Buff Beauty has been a disappointment but now I will aspire to have one as pretty as yours, thanks Patricia, I'll obey any "order" that requires kissing my pugs and thank you for the kind words Sue, I'll just go and give 'em another round of smooches :-) LA I said what I meant and I meant what I said--you have a painter's eye Rosefully, I smiled at my garden but the weeds winked back. Hmmmm. Carol, give that Beau a kiss for me (someone else has to be playing loose with the pooches) and I bet your garden is as beautiful as ever and yes, Joe is perfect Olga, ten, yes, ten decrepit pugs in varying stages of decay (we rescue them that way) and they are delightful and amusing at all times except when food or the whiff of it is around and then they turn into fuzzy, near-sighted, short-snouted jackals. chase: It wasn't that bad getting the "treats" here. Williams-Sonoma shipped them very quickly and very cheaply. They're the chocolate croissants that Oprah says is one of the "best things she can buy". Also, fyi, the orechhiette pasta with a sausage-fennel-pistachio cream sauce is my recipe: Orecchiette with a Sausage and Pistachio Cream Sauce Serves 4-6 Ingredients 1 pound pasta (farfalle, penne, orecchiette) 1/2 pound mild Italian sausage, skinned 2 Tbs butter 1 small onion, sliced thinly 1/2 small bulb fennel, sliced very thin 1-1/4 cup heavy cream 2 Tbs mascarpone cheese 1 Tbs grated parmesan 1/4 cup chopped pistachios salt and white pepper to taste Directions Put on pasta water to boil. Cook crumbled sausage in skillet until done but not overly browned. You can mop up the drippings now if you donÂt want this dish overly oily. Add butter, onion and fennel and cook until soft. Add heavy cream and cook on medium heat to reduce by 1/3. Add mascarpone, parmesan and pistachio and stir until mascarpone and parmesan become creamy with the sauce. Season. Add cooked pasta and toss well. Garnish with fennel leaf. Joe

THANKS everyone!!!! Wow.

Yesterday was the best birthday of my life. (I'm 58 so that means a lot!)

Andrea (a modest cook) made the entire dinner (except for the asparagus, which I blanched and then tossed with olive oil, butter, parmesan, and garlic).

She made a roulade of flank steak with mushroom stuffing, a simple salad and steamed carrots.

She even made my favorite cake -- carrot cake. I gave her the recipe.
