I am sorry I was late responding but we were out of town and then I arrived home to find that my identity at GW and some other sites had somewhat been highjacked by someone who had nothing better to do than steal my identity and make like a bandit with a prolific pen at several sites where I post. ;-) The computer, can't live with it and can't live without it. It's all good. At least there was no banking problem but then my bank account is sort of lackluster and not appealing to someone with grand theft (or even petty larceny) on his/her mind. ;-)

Patricia, I'm so sorry to hear about your identity being hijacked. How awful! I'm glad it was not worse. If I see a strange post from you somewhere on GW, I'll know it wasn't really you.

I am so appreciative of all the beauty here, since my garden looks nothing like its former self. I never knew how much I would miss the blooms of roses, even the paltry show in deadly hot July.

Patricia, I'm sorry, did you get rid of ALL of your roses? I remember you saying quite a while ago that you were paring down your garden, but I hope you still have something left there that brings you happiness. I think that age, or circumstances, will lead a lot of us down that same road one day, unfortunately.

Judith, I thank you so much for your kind words and we are keeping a few that have been able to cope on their own, but all the burdens of rosegrowing which we have experienced over the past few years have naturally pared the garden way back.

We have had our share of RMV,the ravages of RRD, a myriad of fungi and insects, a blight that killed most of the Noisettes, and in the past few years, such very late and hard freezes in late spring that pruned some roses so far back, they never rebounded, so the garden began to look pathetic, and we knew we were not going to be able to maintain the laborious physical and monetary schedule we had, in the past, while acquiring so many roses and maintaining them.

We needed a gardener 2-3 days per week, and sometimes more often, lots of fertilizer, pruning, using chemicals and our water bill was rivaling that of the national debt.

We are slowly replacing our losses with a few evergreens, conifers, deciduous ornamental small trees and some lovely ornamental shrubs, e.g., camellias, tea olives, gardenias, etc.

We still have many climbers and ramblers remaining, enough so that we will have a beautiful late April/early May show.

We still love roses as much as ever and I love coming here to see what everyone else is doing but in our area secondary to the condition alluded to above, it is, unfortunately, a decision we did not come to lightly but growing and caring for hundreds of roses is a love we must leave to others.

Thank you, Melva, and that is just the most beautiful little thing. It has found something. It sees something. They see and find things we never see. It is a beautiful baby, soooo sweet. I wish I could pick it up and kiss it right now. It's a snuggly, fuzzy baby.

Patricia, there are many different types of gardens, each one beautiful in its own way. I'm sure your new one will be lovely, even without all those roses.

Since you're paring down on the roses, might you be adding some daylilies? I remember your mom was a hybridizer. I'm really loving trying my hand at that and they seem to be pretty bulletproof lol.

GardenAtlanta, I thank you so very much. How are things in your neck of the south? Is your garden doing well? A little more rain this year than in the past few, but hot nonetheless, but newly planted things seem to be doing well here and no more losses that I can see so far. Climbers and ramblers are doing well and I hope to have a lovely show of climbers and new other thingies next spring.

Jackie, thank you so much, Sweet Dear. I can imagine you hybridizing in your pearls, a cashmere sweater and singing so beautifully like one of God's beautiful delicate birds in your lovely garden. You are a class act, for sure and yes, I am growing some daylilies, but I think my days of grafting and trying hybridizing are over. I think my mother (and you) have more patience than I. I will just stick to what the locals are selling and friends are giving out.

Love you all. You know I still have about 30 roses, climbing and rambling.

I still have my Elina's and will keep them as long as they will keep me. I have a few Buck's and a couple Tea roses. That's about it but it is still enough to be beautiful in Spring and light up the corners of my world in Autumn.
