Madi bakes, Maci eats...

I was watching the girls last week, so Madi and I just had to bake cookies. Peanut butter cookies. First you have to stir, stir, stir....

Then you scoop them onto the baking sheets with Grandma's scooper. We need one of these.

Then you flatten the tops with a fork and sprinkle with sugar. Um....maybe Grandma should help with that sugar.

What? They aren't done YET? Fine, I'll eat a cracker while I wait, but I'm having one of those cookies as soon as they are out of the oven, or you'll hear about it!

These look pretty good, we'd better take them all home with us so Grandma won't have to eat them. Yeah.....

Good thing they did take them, I might have had to eat them all myself.

Dcarch, I can't say about all Chinese cooking - it's a big place - but we never had baked bread when I grew up. Buns were steamed and pancakes were fried in oil. Although, we had almond cookies and I suppose they were baked, but you didn't make those at home, you bought them. There was never any western-style bread at home, and I don't recall ever seeing dough ''rising'' or any mention of yeast. I do not know why this is so, but one reason may be that the typical Chinese home didn't have an oven. Just burners. I think this may be fairly typical in Asia, still - I think I read that in an article on Japanese home kitchens. So as far as home cooking goes, there's a lot of frying, boiling, steaming, braising - but not a whole lot of baking in a rack in an oven as we do it in the US. Restaurant cooking is different, there are roasted dishes, although often they are spit roasted. Another difference may have to do with wheat vs rice flour, but I can't say. We did use wheat flour at home, I don't know if that was something my grandmother learned after she came to the US. I can't ask her - she is 101 1/2 years old, still in good shape but not really up for a detailed discourse on cooking, you know. But I will ask my aunt and report back. Remember, again, China is big, we came from a little bit of it (Shanghai area) so what I think I know about Chinese home cooking may be completely wrong to someone whose family came from another part of China.

partst, Ashley is doing well after her stroke. She still has some residual issues with her left arm, and her memory is not always reliable, but she's doing well. She still isn't driving and can't return to work yet and it's making her crazy as she's always been going somewhere. Cathy, I like pancakes, so I'm all for Beau making those! Melissa, all my grandkids have been helping me in the kitchen since they were small. My 12 year old Granddaughter is better than I am at crepes and has won several ribbons at our local county fair for baked goods and home preserving. Bud makes the smoothest hummus "in the world". (grin) They have all been in my kitchen since they were sitting on the counter in footie pajamas, playing with dough. I love the company. Cathy and Mary, they make a heckuva mess, but it's just so much more fun with "help", LOL. Annie

Colleen, I can only say that you should be sure they are at least written down. My family had/has several "secret" recipes that no one knows how to make because they were family secrets and younger generations just aren't interested enough to ever obtain them before elderly family members died. I was guilty of that myself with some of Grandma's recipes, but fortunately she shared them and so I found other family members that still had them years after Grandma was gone and I finally decided I wanted to make them. I have a cousin who, when her Mother died, just rented a dumpster. When I asked about old family movies, hoping to have them put onto DVDs, she told me that she didn't think anyone was interested in all that "old stuff" and they went into the dumpster with pretty much everything else that wasn't worth money. (sigh) I know we've had this discussion here before, but today's generation just isn't as interested in "family heirlooms", they are more mobile and have less space and different lifestyles. Someone might want those recipes later, though, and hopefully they'll be preserved in some way. Annie

Baking with home ground wheat flour

After a bit of trial and error we assembled the grain mill, I can never remember how that auger goes in. And we ground wheat: We ground it twice so it was nice and fine. Now, what to do with that lovely wheat flour? Cookies, of course, the universal food, LOL. But their Dad doesn't like chocolate and I was out of chips and so we settled on peanut butter cookies, with one M&M on top of each or one "unicorn" chip, so Daddy could pick them off if he decided he didn't want the decoration. A sprinkle of raw sugar for crunch, and they were ready for the oven. The girls didn't think they were sweet enough, so they added Nutella frosting, but I liked them. They weren't particularly sweet, but they were soft and fluffy, and tasted of fresh grain and peanuts, which I thought was very nice. I also have hard red wheat, hard white wheat, soft white wheat and some corn. I'm going to use the rest of this batch of flour to make bagels, I think. If this virus gets worse I won't see the girls for a while, but if it stays "stable" in my area we'll do some more baking and talk about why certain types of wheat are better for certain kinds of baking and maybe make something like soft pretzels. Their teachers were very impressed and said they thought no other kid in the school district would have that particular lesson, combining science, agriculture and a bit of math, LOL. Annie

How children learn to bake. Start with one fantastic grandma and the fun begins. then you get to enjoy of eating them. Cookies yummy. How it starts. My grandson and I had so much fun baking chocolate chip cookies and now that he is 24 he still loves to bake. Love your pictures too.

Nothing better than being with the grands but cooking with them is a grand slam! Bonding time, learning new skills, sharing with other family members, and encourages creativity.

Annie I love those chairs with the rose carving on the back. Where did they come from? BF is afraid of any kind of chair that a little kid could get his head stuck in though. His dining chair backs look like a birdcage!

Dcarch, neither of those girls stay still long enough for many Norman Rockwell moments, LOL. Maybe it's the sugar. I love that serious face when Madi is scooping dough though, it's a serious job, that one should go on the cover of one of those baking magazines. (grin)

Mitch, Maci will be a year old in August, Madi will be three in December. Right now Madi is more fun, but Maci is learning fast how yummy cookies are.

Islay, the cookies were pretty good, it's a good thing they took them home.

plllog, they aren't efficient, but they are darned cute. (grin)

Grandmamary, it is so worth it. It takes time and they make a mess, but they have such a good time. Even Maci will sit in her high chair and play with cookie dough. Well, mostly she eats it, but still....

Laurie, those chairs came with the Duncan Phyfe table in my kitchen. I bought the table and 6 chairs, newly reupholstered, for $50.00. Some lady in Coopersville had them, they belonged to her mother. She threw in three leaves and the felt protectors too...

dcarch, that doesn't quite do it justice, there's no batter on the washing machine or doors, LOL.

Tami, I'm taking advantage of it while they still want to bake with me, someday I will not be "cool" anymore, I'll just be old. (grin)

KD, that would be her mother, my own Ashley, who insists that Maci has enough hair for a pony tail. Nope, she doesn't. Ashley didn't either, she was bald until she was two!

Heavens Annie...where doe the time go.! Madi is such a big girl! Seems just like last week that you were telling us that Amanda was expecting. Meredith was just going into high school.

My day will come for grands.........or so I hope. Chris is right off in that regard but Meredith seems to be on the right track. LOL
