Washers: please explain high efficiency advantages vs. agitator
Comments (6)You did not mention if your GE Filter Flo still works-on the -automaticwasher.org-site your machine is one of the preferred vintage machines- a good repair tech and advice from that site should be able to keep it running. My take on ConsumerReports recently is that they are all about energy and water conservation, good causes they are, even if it is to the detriment of performance and/or low life cycle costs-see how few years they recommend replacement over repair. Besides the Speed Queen, the Fisher Paykel Eco Smart with traditional agitator might be suitable if you cannot keep your GE running. FP uses very little hot water unless YOU CHOOSE to run a cycle with a full tub of warm or hot water and it has a high speed spin to save energy and time in the dryer. With any new machine's electronic controls use a good surge suppressor to help prevent blown control boards. We have had our F&P about 10 years, use a surge suppressor and unplug washer between uses-no problems so far....See MoreWashers, agitator vs. HE
Comments (10)Thanks for the advice and the chuckle. I'm waiting for the FP AquaSmart to be delivered by Lowe's, probably after Labor Day. The Intuitive Eco is no longer available in my area. :( Now that I've calmed down, I feel more optimistic that the agitator-less AquaSmart will help me clean my clothes without cracking a Chemistry or Physics book. ;) I am so tired of babysitting my Bosch, which in all fairness to Bosch-lovers, is a lemon. Bosch's repairman confirmed this. No one would love THIS machine if they had to use it. I installed a brass splitter and attached a short garden hose to both the hot and cold water intakes. I manually add more water at the beginning of the wash cycle and the rinse cycles. (Yes, I actually have to stand there with the garden hose stuffed down the proverbial "throat" of the washing machine). The laundry comes out nice and clean though. This makes me fairly confident that the problem is in fact, the amount of water the machine's "brain" is telling it to put in the tub. Bosch will not address this with any "customer service". They would rather stall and dodge. Hopefully Lowe's will back-charge them for the return. I understand these big box stores have a lot of leverage over vendors. Ultimately, I'm forced to give the Bosch Nexxt 500 miserable reviews. I'm looking forward to an end to this annoying preoccupation with my laundry. Thanks for listening....See MoreFisher & Paykel GWL 10 washer won't agitate
Comments (5)The agitator is bolted directly to the drive shaft and turns as per the motor's rotation (or oscillation). The agitator is always driven by the motor's rotation, whether during agitation or spin. The inner basket sits atop a clutch cog under the agitator. When the tub fills with water, air caught under the basket base causes it to float upward slightly and disengage from the cog so the agitator can oscillate separately (the basket free-spins during agitation). The basket settles back down on the drive cog for spin when the water drains. Turning the agitator by hand when the machine is empty of water should rotate the basket with it. Removing the agitator -- Take off the softener dispenser/cap at the top. Reach down inside and unscrew the hold-down nut. The agitator then lifts up and out (unless it's stuck). Turn it over and examine whether the keyed socket that fits on the shaft is perhaps worn or cracked. Don't overtighten the plastic hold-down nut when replacing the agitator to avoid stripping the threads....See Moreanyone have a top load washer with an agitator that they like?
Comments (13)FLs come in various sizes and depths. I have a compact Bosch pair in a closet. They can be installed in a cabinet run under a counter so they are 22" deep. Again, you are so fortunate to have a classic machine that gave you long years of service. Making a change will require an adjustment in any event....See Moremara_2008
