Washers: please explain high efficiency advantages vs. agitator

I would VERY much appreciate recommendations for top loaders to replace my 27 year old GE Filter-Flo. We are 2 empty nesters, so our use is not heavy. I don't want a front loader. The laundry room is adjacent to the kitchen, so noise is a factor. It doesn't need to be the quietest, but not really noisy either.

When I went shopping last week for a new one, most dealers had chiefly the High Efficiency type with no agitator. I did not get a really clear explanation for why they are so desirable, nor how the use in practice and cycles really differ from an agitator machine. All I know is that they use less water, which is not a priority for me.

I wanted to stick with an agitator as that's what I know. My mode of washing clothes is also to soak them before running the load, as I feel it get them cleaner (I'm a gardener, work outside, and do other dirty/dusty tasks. Spraying clothes with water, if that's really how they work: would not be enough). And if they can't be soaked, then that won't work for me. I also soak some things in a small amount of hot water, then add to the load and add more warm water to run the load. Might be weird but it works for me. I work at home so I can do this.

If I am not understanding the way the High Efficiency machines work, please tell me.

I checked Consumer reports, and they recommended ONLY the high efficiency machines, and no agitator models. So now I don't know what to do.

Sounds like you need a Speed Queen. If water efficiency is not a factor and you like soaking your clothes, then I don't think a HE toploader is what you're looking for.

The ONLY thing I miss about our HE frontloader is the fast spin that lowers drying times. Other than that, we love our SQ. There is no question in my mind that our clothes are getting cleaner.

I second what's been said above. If you don't care for front loaders or HE top loaders... get a traditional top loader. Speed Queen is practically the only traditional brand left, unless you can dig up another vintage washer like yours in good shape.

The problem of today's market is that sometimes you have to sacrifice something for another. A couple of reasons for the development of front loader washers is eco-friendliness and space-savings. Eco-friendly in the sense that the front loader uses less water and therefore less detergent. They are also a space-saver because of the ability to stack the dryer on top of the washer, install them in a closet space or even under a kitchen cabinet (like the ones that ASKO produces - http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/W6984FI.html?brand_store=1). But then again there are companies out there that are taking the "less water" concept into consideration when developing top load washers. Take for example, WA42T26GW1 from Fisher & Paykel (I found it here - http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/WA42T26GW1.html) which has an auto water level that senses the size of the load and selects the optimum water level automatically, eliminating water wastage and fabric damage caused by too little water. The only thing is that you can't stack it, but if that isn't a problem for you then it doesn't matter. I use to own a top load before converting to my Electrolux Wave Touch machines, and my machine use to emit a nasty smell (well, maybe not nasty but definitely not pleasant) after a couple of weeks of use and I use to hate cleaning the dispensers which use to get all greased up and nasty (I tend to use this word alot!). So smell there always will be whether you use a front load or a top load. And cleaning the tub is definitely not that difficult as my machine reminds me when I need to do it and all I have to do is run a cleaning cycle with bleach. Like PC vs Mac, there will always be arguments around which one is the best and it will always come down to which one YOU are most comfortable with.

LG washer shrinking clothes on cold! Please help!

@HU-410414692 Thanks so much for explaining why clothing and household items I've washed for years in cold, now shrink in Samsung's version of "cold". I've ruined too many loved items, things I've ALWAYS machine-washed. So thinking it must have been my error, and I'd forgotten to change the temp setting, I'd try it again. After several such shrinkage mishaps, I knew for certain I was using the cold setting. So I no longer wash anything shrinkable in my machine, even on delicate. I live in Southern California on a raised foundation house. The water doesn't get that cold in the first place, so if this machine adds warm water, as you explained, then I'm screwed for washing wools. I suppose I could wash on delicate in cold on very cold days in winter only and keep my fingers crossed. But it's not worth the risk. And that doesn't happen that often anyway. This shrinkage was the first thing I called Samsung about when I first bought the set. Samsung sent out a repairman because it was under warranty and he couldn't find anything wrong. (roll eyes). The company line was deny, deny, deny. I was so concerned about the machine destroying my things that I forgot to ask about the front coming off every time I opened the detergent drawer. I solved that issue by never using liquids At this point, the set is barely functioning as a washer and dryer for me. I might as well beat my clothes on rocks and dry them on tree branches. If I had the money for a new set, I'd set these on fire, I hate them that much. And I couldn't in good faith sell them to anyone else. Anyone considering buying Samsung: Please reconsider. I bought a Maytag Bravos top loader in March 2008. In June 2009, I noticed brown flakes on the upper rim of the laundry drum. When I ran my fingers up under the rim of the lid, they became covered with gunk/rust. With a flashlight, I was able to see all the rust around the underside of the rim, especially at the back. The owner of the appliance store where I purchased the washer said this was impossible because the lid is plastic. She said she'd order a new top for me. After dragging her feet all summer with one excuse after another, she directed me to the company to which she sold my five year extended warranty. I called the new company and was told by one rep the rust was cosmetic, so it isn't covered. A second call yielded a different rep who said if the rust is getting on my clothes, which it is, the repair or replacement would be covered. When the repairman opened the lid, the amount of rust was shocking. He said it is VERY COMMON in top loaders, but most people don't notice it (lucky me). According to him, EPA regulations prohibit manufacturers from coating the steel lid with the amount of porcelin(?) necessary to prevent rust. With all the water splashing around under the lid, there is no way to prevent it (side loaders don't have this problem). I was told not to bother trying to clean under the rim and even though specks fall onto the clothes, the problem isn't covered. The extended warranty only addresses rust that may develop in the stainless steel tub, which is highly unlikely. The floor under my machine is covered with 'rust droppings'. I have thought about writing Maytag/Whirlpool, but I doubt I will get anywhere. The specks of rust on the clothes is only a minor issue at the moment, but will undoubtedly become worse as the rust continues to build up. I have tried to remove some of the rust several times, but in doing so it gets everywhere and I have to wipe out the machine and run it through the 'clean' cycle. I have read reports about this problem from other Bravos owners, as well as owners of other top loader brands. Unfortunately, I didn't do any research before purchase. So for those of you thinking about getting a top loader, I'd reconsider if I were you!

Let me just add a bit of “traditionalist history” here. Large apron front sinks had a functionality that goes beyond a typical basin sink. Farm house sinks tend to be deeper than a modern sink. They are typically wider, as others have said, they enable you to wash large pots, pans, cooking sheets, and even the baby. in the old days, there weren’t dishwashers, indoor plumbing, or for that matter hot water heaters. These large sinks, and the materials they were made from allowed water that was hand drawn from wells, rivers and streams to be boiled and heated. The materials those sinks were made from insulated that hot water, keeping it hot. The depth of the sink allowed it to become a “cleaner” place to spritz up with hot water, rather than drawing multiple buckets to handle a tub. As most in the old days were people of modest means, and even today farmers aren’t millionaires, protective elements were often incorporated into the designs and functionality of these sinks. The apron, by its nature and design, served the purpose of directing spilled or splashed water away from cabinets, drawer fronts, and doors on the surrounding cabinetry, which was often more expensive and more difficult to replace or repair than the floor. So, aside from the aesthetics, and given the expense and composition of the materials, laminates, and finishes on modern cabinetry, the apron front does help in preserving your cabinetry...

I can vouch for speed queen and I had a HE toploader washer and got ride of it due to destroying clothes when it was two years old. Clothes come out super clean, done in 35 minutes and you can do a true soak if you like.

We had the most expensive HE top loader that Sears had a few years ago. I cannot begin to tell you how much we hated it. It had to 'think' for you; no other choice. The idea of using less water sounds great, but because clothes weren't loose in the water, they came out of the dryer very wrinkled. Whatever energy was saved in less water was more than made up for by having to iron everything.

We are building a new home and I want:
1. To set the water level myself
2. A slow agitation speed for delicate things
3. An optional second rinse.

I've been doing laundry enough years I can think for myself.

You did not mention if your GE Filter Flo still works-on the -automaticwasher.org-site your machine is one of the preferred vintage machines- a good repair tech and advice from that site should be able to keep it running. My take on ConsumerReports recently is that they are all about energy and water conservation, good causes they are, even if it is to the detriment of performance and/or low life cycle costs-see how few years they recommend replacement over repair. Besides the Speed Queen,the Fisher Paykel Eco Smart with traditional agitator might be suitable if you cannot keep your GE running. FP uses very little hot water unless YOU CHOOSE to run a cycle with a full tub of warm or hot water and it has a high speed spin to save energy and time in the dryer. With any new machine's electronic controls use a good surge suppressor to help prevent blown control boards. We have had our F&P about 10 years,use a surge suppressor and unplug washer between uses-no problems so far.
