ERV vs not sealing up house

Im building a new 2500 sq ft home in central Va. I want to do the spray foam insulation among other things to really seal up the house and insulate it well, but in doing so I believe I'll need an ERV. Now as good as an ERV must be, it must really put a damper on the effeciency of all the sealing and high R values. Not to mention that your supposed to run the bath fan for at least 20 mins after taking a bath that must really suck all the conditioned air out of the house. Is it really that more efficient to do all the sealing and use an ERV or is it better to do something else?
