furnace and a/c-southern california

we have a 30 year old carrier downdraft 125 btu furnace working fine for a part of the downstairs of a large house --there are three other furnaces,etc-this is the only old one and we are considering changing it now b/c of the tax credit.we have a 4 ton carrier a/c condenser paired with it which is 10 years old that still works.

OR should we wait for the furnace to just quit? is that safe?

another proposal is to install a new 95% carrier unit variable speed 100,000 btu but would we get the same heating result as we currently have with single stage 125 btu old furnace

price is 5200 installed for the carrier variable 95% model

another proposal is:

Amana 90k furnace --95% unit variable speed with a new 5 ton amana 2 speed a/c/ for the same price--5200-- as just for the carrier furnace only! Is Amana as reliable as Carrier? Is carrier worth the difference nowadays? I am wondering if going to the smaller furnace works with a larger a/c unit?

-we do not know if

it is important to change out the a/c unit at the same time our 10 year old carrier works fine and uses r22 refrigerant, not puron.

also if we do change out the a/c --can we really put in this larger a/c unit or should we?--5 ton along with a 90k furnace . this is a downdraft furnace and a very easy install-in and out b/c it is in an outside cabinet of the house.

What air filter system do you suggest--currently we have the electronic units original with furnace that have to be washed several times a year.

new thermostats needed?
