You have some really nice trim in that room so I would suggest doing something as an inside mount so you don't cover up the trim/medallions. (if you really want valances)

I don't think I would suggest treating the doors - just the 2 windows flanking the FP. You have light swtich plates and something else to the right of the one door that you wouldn't want to cover up with fabric and if you mount something inside the frame it would make it harder to pass through the door!!!

On the 2 side windows, you could do any type of board mounted treatment that would be mounted inside the frame and the mini blinds would then have to be hung on the bottom of that board.

But really this room could go without any window treatments because of the nice stained trim. Have you thought about putting an arched or rectangular type wall hanging above the windows (something similar to the clock) and not hanging any valances?

Congrats to you and your new little one!! I have been looking for curtains/drapes for my dining room slider and I have found some great choices on jcpenney.com and also country curtains.com. Your room is lovely and I think a colorful print would be great... it would be shame to cover all that beautiful moulding but there are inside mount valances or how bout a panel on each window with a tieback.. for example, left window with tieback to left and right window with a tieback to the right.. then the moulding won't be totally hidden under panels on both sides of the window...hopefully i am making sense.. and for the slider either a matching valance or a slider panel..
I have ordered panels for my slider from jcp that are backordered but should be shipped any day now.. My room is painted Behr winter wheat with white wainscotting on bottom half of the walls so I went with spicy red to add some more color to the room.. I'll post a pic when they come in..
I hope I was some help but most of all wanted to welcome you to this forum. I am quite new here myself and I am sure you will get some wonderful ideas from the amazing people on this site.

What do you think about putting a rod over each window with only one panel either draped to a tie back or just hanging straight on the outside of each window? To the floor. Leave the blinds of course for privacy. That way you wouldn't hide too much of your wood trim and it wouldn't be too busy with fabric. You could take the rods all the way to the fireplace -- it'll look like the rod goes through. It could look kind of fun. I'd do full draperies on the door, using the same fabric. It looks like you could open the door draperies in the center without crowding the opening too much and the fabric would frame your doors nicely when they are pulled open. If you want to do rings or grommets instead of traverse rod on your doors, consider using the same hardware on your windows. Hang all three treatments at the same height. I think you room has great potential. I think you'll love what window fabric will do to your room.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking of doing panels on either window with a tieback and hearing others suggest it helps wme with my decision. We need something oon the doorwall because there is a horrible glare in the room all day long. I suggested panels to my husband, but he didn't seem to care for that idea. Maybe he would reconsider if he saw a picture. We never use the switches to the right of the door-the exact same switches are on another wall. The person who owned this house before went crazy with that sort of thing! There is also another doorwall right around the corner from the one pictured, so we never use the one in the family room.

I think the room needs some color. After looking at the pictures I posted, it seems to be all one color. There is an area rug on the floor and a copper colored couch that I didn't picture that adds some color, but it needs a little more.

It is going to be difficult putting functional panels on the sliding glass doors because of the lack of stack-back room on the left side. A drapery panel will cut the glare, but is going to also cut the light.

If your budget allows it, maybe think about wooden blinds that match the trim on the windows and the door, then stationary panels on the two windows. One issue that may arise is whether you could inside-mount the wooden blinds on the door. They take up more space than the mini-blinds.

Now that you mention it, yes, you do have a lot of gold in the room. Generally the decorating books will tell you to shoot for having three colors in a room.

You may want to think about two other colors to bring in. The easy way to start is with accent pillows. You could start testing which colors you in the room by replacing the matching ones you have on the chair. You can buy them inexpensively - and return them if you bring them home and they don't work in the room.

You may want to start another thread asking for color suggestions. We have some wonderful color experts here.

I have to agree with graywings. I'd put either woven-wood blinds or vertical wood blinds on the windows and sliders, if you can. I don't think the white blinds are doing anything for your room or windows. Then I might add some softness and color in other areas -- the mantel looks pretty bare so you could add something colorful there, and/or a live plant or two? Some colorful pillows on the chairs/sofa, bringing together whatever other colors you add to the room (some more of the copper from your sofa, perhaps some greens). Maybe a couple of floor pillows (fun for baby to crawl on, could also be propped in front of fireplace to prevent baby from crawling up there!). If you still wanted curtains, I'd do what mom2 girls suggested with one panel on each of the fireplace windows, and two panels for the sliders.

I saw on your other post that you are ambivalent about the paint color. I'm glad you posted these pictures, you have a very pretty home. And maybe the 'all one color' thing shows up more in photos. A perfectly lovely room can look not so great in photos. But if you are really contemplating repainting the family room, wait until you make a decision before you do the windows. Or, find the window treatments or fabric, and pull a new paint shade from there.
