Need suggestions to warm up Family Room

Hello All, This is what I've done so far. I want this space to be cozier..I know I need some accessories but I always come back from the store emptyhanded coz I dont know what to buy?

I am not sure I am a big fan of the pillows. The black ones are nice coz they have the steel blue from the drapes as well so they kind of tie things together but not sure about the white ones.

Please tell me what to do

What clor are your walls? It looks like your sofa blends into the wall. Can you show a picture showing more of the room?

Art on the walls can help warm up the space. But one thing that you might look at is that everything right now is a 'cool' color. Consider adding an accent color in small doses to warm up the area - perhaps a coral, or a yellow or an orange. Maybe a small clear vase of coral roses, a throw with some coral and blue in it, maybe a pair of candlesticks with coral candles., a couple of pillows in a coral print.

Bringing in some greenery can also soften and make a space feel more cozy. A floor plant behind the couch on the left end near the wall, or use a coral glass bowl filled with moss balls on the tray.

Hmmm. all good questions and suggestions. DH is also worried about wood maintenance. I want to talk with a distributor about that. I was thinking the counter DH and most everyones else uses could be completely sealed/varnished and perhaps the one by the range (that I would use most) be oiled. I don't know if it's too noticeable to look at. If so, I could varnish all of it too. If it's out of my budget (we're still working on that), then what should I do about the sides if I go with granite on the island? Wood costs about the same, I think as granite. Ugh, I'm great at making lots of decisions but then I can get fixated on one detail!

Bestyears, I just had to log in to say first, your room is fabulous. I love the color you painted it and am jealous of your amazing sewing skills. I love the fabrics you have chosen. The second thing I wanted to say is to think long and hard before purchasing the braided jute rug from Ballard. I absolutely love the look. It has to be one of the best looking jute rugs out there, but it is a maintenance nightmare. It takes some getting used to underfoot but will eventually wear to a somewhat soft feel. The maintenance however, is tremendous. I had one for 2.5 years in our primary living area with heavy traffic and it was like have 15 large shedding dogs with a few cats sprinkled in. Fibers everywhere. If your room doesn't get much traffic it might work otherwise I would try to find something else first. I replaced it with a cheap seagrass from Lowes for the time being and it doesn't shed at all. Laurainlincoln might can share more if she has this rug. It might not wear for her like it did for me. Install glass shelves in the niche with and LED can light in the ceiling of it to light up a collection of something pretty, interesting or unusual. This is is a very awkward arrangement with the sectional jammed in the corner and into the windows. With the larger TV centered on its wall, you'll need to pull the sofa out to float centered with the TV wall and the fireplace. You might try its matching hassock/footstool pushed into that window corner with a pile of colorful pillows to match a new rug. That would make a nice reading spot or a corner lounge for the teen who wants to be on their phone or other device. Your rug is much too small for that big sofa. That's where you will get the "homely & warm" color/pattern. Once you get the furniture arranged, use painter's tape on the floor and tape out a "virtual" rug that slips under the front 1/3 of the sofa seats and extends past the ends of it by a foot or more. Keep it at least 12" from the hearth. If your measurement is not a standard size, then go up a size if you can so you don't get a skimpy one. As for empty space around the sofa, try a sofa or game table behind the short side of it. If you're not installing draperies, hang art between the windows. You can put casegoods under the art too. The art above the mantel is too large; keep it mantel art within the width of the firebox below it.

you want modern farmhouse? with that fireplace tile?? Really isn't going to work w/that style. You could try an finagle something like this look what do you think about redoing the fireplace? This is a black slate tile all the way up to the ceiling. looks better than the way you have yours. can you guys DIY at all? you could do a skimcoat overlay of type of concrete or roman plaster I'd prob just knock off all that tile, but you could fir it out and put up cement board, skim coat that. plaster or overlay the bottom potion, and do a reclaimed wood above it if you remove that tile, you could just face the wall w/a shiplap and do a black tile border edge around the firebox. here's a black and white type of shiplap Or something like this look. These will all work w/modern farmhouse style. what you currently have, really doesn't. Since that is a major focal point, I'd think hard about redoing it. pick paint after you pick your furniture and any other accessories. much easier to match paint to that than matching furniture you like to paint

I agree with Les...everything is very cool and neutral. The room needs a punch of color, either through accents and wall art or painting the walls. I'd use more throw pillows. Find some with an accent color that still works with your blue and black. I have lots of throw pillows on my sectional and it makes such a difference! Good Luck!

First -- consider switching to a warmer tone on the walls -- one that is still "neutral" -- but perhaps a warmer deeper taupe, warmer brown-gray etc.

And yes - consider artworks -- go to art.com -- and simply browse through their categories .... always a good way to find ones that might appeal to you. For example (JUST an example) -- try browsing through the "Abstract" category -- I've included a hot link to take you right there ..... look for ones that have that wonderful blue, silver etc.

Yes -- consider adding a bit of a pop of warm color with a glass bowl -- full of oranges or lemons or even limes (just a way to TRY out a color!) OR take a red sweater or bright pink tee-shirt -- and simply cover one of the pillows. See how the color works for you!

"Texture" is another way to add warmth to a room ..... try switching to a dark woven tray on the ottoman OR a couple of dark baskets on a shelf or bookshelves etc.

The wall color is fine if you would put some striking prints on the walls. Replace those pillows with 2 in a blue/brown/tan plaid---you can find some nice moire fabrics in plaid that will tie in with your sofa and the curtains. Even if you keep the zebra patterned rug, I would change from black to brown as my new accent color.

If you like blue and white china you can pick it up very inexpensively in import stores. A few corbels or sconces on the wall displaying ginger gars or urns (or vases, just some classic shape) in the blue and white would add interest, too. Use velcro to make sure they stay put.

I would replace the lap throw with a boucle weave in brown.
