Furniture Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Need suggestions on family room decor

The family room in my house is 13 feet wide and so any sofa with width as less as 83 inch is making it difficult to keep space around the room. Loveseats are too small in size, so I am trying not to consider those unless they are atleast 71 inch wide.

I have been now contemplating on adding a daybed instead and use it as a sofa while putting maybe a love seat or two sofa chairs on one of the sides. My only dilemma is will daybed look weird in a family room. This is a space which will be used a lot , not just by family but also when friends will come over. So any suggestions on furnishing this room will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Which way do the doors open?

How is the other half of the room used?

How many people watch TV at the same time here?

The doors open outside. The other half has access to garage and laundry room. At a time 3-4 people watch tv

I think it is a shame that so much of your seating ignores the lovely fireplace! I would try moving the sectional so that the corner of the sectional is down in the far right corner of the room, away from the windows. The back of the couch appears lower, so I would have that in front of the windows. Put the tv in the other corner, by the windows, angled. Bring back the chair and angle it in front of the fireplace, on the left side so it faces the windows. Bring the tree branch art down, as it is currently hung way too high, and move it so that it is hanging over the part of the sectional on that end wall. Space the panels a few inches further apart for a more interesting feel. I think the coffee table is unique, but it does have a rather commanding presence in the space. Plus, as the baby starts to crawl and toddle, you are likely to want more open floor space. Have you considered bringing in a warm shade as an accent color? Some touches of orange or coral could be very pretty. You have a very pretty and friendly space. The little tweaks will make it feel finished.

Would you have it in your budget to hire a professional to come up with optional layouts and furniture suggestions. If not, you should work with an online room planner and really consider your family's needs and a few seating/working areas. The paint color can really be the last things to consider, based on what you have selected in terms of art, drapery, couch, etc. and I would paint the trim at the same time as you are doing the walls. Look at inspiration pictures to help (not necessarily with layout but seating options, accessories, bookcases, desk/office needs, color combinations) and based on your taste for modern farmhouse, you may want to check Joanna Gaines' site for inspirations. I would suggest a slightly larger glass and metal rectangular coffee table to give this room more sophistication and lightness. There is some blue in the painting and I'd use that, rather than the orange for pillows on the furniture. You can also use blue and white since you have a white area rug. You have a gorgeous kitchen and dining area. Take all the pictures and clutter off the TV console and around the bottom of the fireplace. Have just a very few well-thought-out pieces on the mantel under the picture, nothing else. You do need a much larger console for the TV, but please don't use that area for family photographs. You could have a small table next to the chair by the window after you've cleaned up that area, and a have a few photos there in silver-colored frames, not wood. I see TV wires hanging down and that needs to be fixed. Unless you need the privacy and light control I'm not sure I would cover up these windows.

We have a daybed in our family room. Well, actually a futon. I'd be lying if I said we never used it to sleep on . . . it doesn't have any bigger footprint than a daybed . . . depending on the design, perhaps less . . . the old MCM "studio couch" concept had even less footprint, but that's because it didn't have arms, kind of like a futon frame sans arms.

Thinking of putting this twin size daybed. Hopefully it will not make the room like a bed room. Planning to put some nice pillows to give the required look

I missed your earlier post. That’s a nice daybed. Question is whether it’s comfortable for guests — not too deep, plenty of back support — and if you are going to put a coffee table in front of it, because end tables would be useless.

I have a daybed in the kids’ playroom. I didn’t anticipate how uncomfortable it would be to sit on. It’s just too deep, back and sides too straight, never enough pillows and pillows end up all over the room. Also, any of the daybeds I looked at with backs were actually not full backs, so you can’t float it in the room if you care about it looking nice.

I’m in a similar situation with a small living room. We found a wonderful sofa that’s about 80” wide after searching for months. Most websites have filters so you can narrow the search (pun intended) to the proper width for the room.

I’d recommend a sofa with narrow arms so you can comfortably sit 2 people, a single or double seat cushion and a not too deep seat. Then place a narrow sofa table at the back of the sofa. The sofa faces the built in. Have 2 swivel chairs opposite the sofa with a small profile table in between the chairs. A slim coffee table in front of the sofa. And good lighting!

Third time this week to recommend grouping comfortable armchairs instead of using a sofa in a TV watching but narrow room. You can buy swivel chairs or install them on a couple chairs.
