How do you decorate your dormers?

We have dormers in our guest and master bedrooms. Similar to the one pictured only ours is wider, window is larger - the cabinet is a nice size (great storage).

My husband came up with the idea of putting antique book shelves on one of the walls.

That got me to thinking - maybe a smallish English Mahogany book rack on one side filled with old red and gold books (have some interesting items for the other side that I have been collecting but haven't used - a framed antique Chinese tapestry with Chine blue, reds, green and gold threads, 2 very old antique small brass mirrors, an antique blue and white transfer platter).

Then there is the top of the cabinet (almost big enough for a window seat)...thinking about a chunky lamp, maybe nothing - don't know :-).

Do you have dormers and how do you decorate them?

Forgot to mention - my style is restrained English cottage (no frilly things). Mix of antiques and newer but traditional styles.

Okay - trying to envision your space as it is currently but I'm having a hard time.

Do you currently have a built in bench and if so would the mahogany bookrack act sort of as a side table?

I like my fruit refrigerated except for bananas which I keep in a bag in a cupboard. I do have a 3 tiered stand that I use for tomatoes, garlic and my car keys but the island has a large wooden bowl that is mostly decorative. I usually remove it when I start to seriously cook. Not sure of the islands dimensions but 40" x 60" seems about right.

Well -- time to start your decorating notebooks!! In your case I would buy several good-looking matching binders -- one for each room or space. Add LOTS of those plastic sleeve pages -- as well as ones that have a zipper close to hold fabric or other swatches or samples. THEN add basic pages with measurements for each space -- including the doorways; doors; windows and a basic sketched plan of the room that marks where electrical outlets etc. will be placed. Then go through your R&D (research and development) materials -- and cut out what you need. Also note (with yellow sticky notes) on the pages about "Purchasing Information" Also make note of "your Trends" as you cut out the photos .... perhaps a color, fabric style or type, furniture type etc. Helps you to narrow your choices. So VERY Important to add paint samples, floor samples, fabric samples! Now take these notebooks EVERYWHERE -- you never know when a bargain will jump out of a crowd! Also carry a good measuring tape and a camera! ALSO -- always keep hard copies of e-mails between you and your contractor, suppliers and builders etc. Let them know that you will require hard copies of documents! Add photos of any and all "questionable" items or practices. Make sure that you sign off on EACH and EVERY change -- and keep a copy. Keep all of this in a separate binder ((with sections for each room)) under the title "General/Legal Building Information" Keep it in a place where you and your DH can refer to it on a daily Or hourly basis! Also keep an online diary of the whole procedure -- again -- so you can keep a very good track of the timeline on each stage of the process! Add photos!! And then download it to a disc ....

Okay, I was feeling a little bad, but now, after reading what she said about soonermagic's house, which we all know is decorated very well, I don't. I have to say that in the years I have spent on this forum, I have never said anything about anyone's decorating until now. This is the first "out there" kind of decorating I have ever seen on here, so I thought it was a joke. I hope, if I ever post pics, that she does say she doesn't like my style! I hope I haven't scared anyone of posting pics, because I really and truly enjoy them and see some wonderful things.

Gayle, that has to be the most bizarre Christmas story ever! What a movie it would make, lol. Purely sentimental here! We never had kids, but that didn't stop us from having a young-at-heart tree. The fresh tree has always had an eclectic mix of handmade and store bought ornaments ... crocheted snowflakes and angels, stuffed Kliban cats, Spanish moss wreaths that dh made almost 30 years ago (still use 'em), terra cotta, metal, resin, straw, wood, brass, etc. Some ornaments have been retired, but I can't bring myself to toss 'em. I keep them in a separate storage bin along with the photo cards from years past. Never owned a ball ornament until last year when I bought a dozen mercury glass balls from Restoration Hardware. They're beautiful, but very heavy. This year I added glass icicles. Wish I had a couple dozen more of those in the shorter lengths. In years past I've strung popcorn and cranberries for garland. Switched to freshly harvested Spanish moss for a few years. Didn't have any garland the past couple years. This year added some beechwood cranberry garland. I love colored lights on the tree. Tried white lights for a couple years, but switched back. The 4' artificial tree in the dining room is pre-strung with white lights. I guess that tree has a nature theme with a lot of birds, fish, acorns, a few bears and a moose. After Christmas I glitz it up with Mardi Gras lights and beads until Fat Tuesday.

ttodd - I posted a link at the bottom of my first post - the pic is a similar style to ours - except ours is quite a bit larger (wider, taller with recessed lighting, larger window). Thanks for your help.

Catt - please share some pix of your new home. I so miss your pictures!! Are you still decorating with the transfer ware, the old pictures, etc.? I have an inspiration picture saved from your old living room.

Tina - I am in need of a new camera. I have a few pics taken with the cell - not the greatest....will post when I have time.

I can't believe no one has dormers that they decorate!

The example you posted wouldn't lend itself to adding anything more as it would end up feeling very cramped and cluttered, I think. I am having a hard time picturing any dormer with much more than a window seat actually and that may be why you haven't gotten too many responses. I would stick with the window seat unless yours is really huge.

Cyn - the picture I posted is the style - not the size or the feel of our dormer - I did try to convey that in my original post. It isn't a cramped space at all, it is actually fairly large. I know having a picture would help but I don't have a camera right now - we are looking for a new camera and have narrowed it down to 3.

Do you need storage? I can see a chest with drawers sitting in your dormer with a green plant in front of the window. If your dormer is wider, would it accommodate a small easy chair with floor lamp as a reading area. The dormers I have seen either have a window seat or built in chests with drawers. I guess you could put book shelves across the space also. Not sure I would put shelves on the side walls.
