This year I've had the privilege of compiling the best renovation details on Houzz into renovation-related ideabooks. Throughout 2012 I've delved into the intricacies of Craftsman architecture, dissected exterior architectural detailing and even gotten spicy with 50 Shades of Gray.
Smith & Vansant Architects' Lake Fairlee, Vermont, house neatly incorporates the elements of 10 of these ideabooks. The impeccably constructed summer residence and carriage house boast a bevy of architectural details, including 10 of my favorite ones featured in 2012.

1. No matter what style kitchen you have, a window above the sink is always appropriate.
2. Five-panel doors add architectural interest with their streamlined, classic design.
3. Casement windows are an excellent choice if you're looking for unobstructed views and maximum ventilation.
4. Flat-sawn balusters with a simple triangular pattern convey a good old-fashioned feel in a home.
5. With an ingenious top-hung sash, awning windows can be left open while it's raining without letting water into the home.
6. Fixed transom windows provide a dash of architectural pizzazz and let natural light in.
7. A screened-in porch is an excellent setting for making outdoor magic using string lighting with paper shades.
8. The wall above a desk is the perfect place for pinning up reminders or inspirational photos. The trick is to custom fit a piece of cork to the space.
9. Fill your kitchen with a mix of metals, choosing different finishes for hardware, lighting and plumbing fixtures.
10. To expand living space and maximize light at the top of a home, consider adding a shed dormer or two to the architecture.
