Help with 90+ Year Old Grandmother...(long)
Comments (9)Oh, do I ever feel for you! Gabby's got a great amount of good advice. ALso try to think ahead, as in, what happens next.... You and your sister and anyone else you can bring into this, all need to be on the same page. I moved my (then) 92 yr old Mother from Arizona to CA a few years ago, and into one of the those dreaded senior complexes just a few miles from my home. She just passed away in December, but I had the priveledge of being with her often in her last years. What I learned is that things start going down hill. Every time an elder faces an illness or any set-back, the recovery is never 100%, they always seem to be a little less than they were before. I found that I had to become the "parent" in our relationship, and really make some hard decisions. It might be like an intervention, but you and your sister, and your grandmother's pastor or friends might need to confront her (gently of course) about making this change in her life. I was driving down to Scottsdale (725 miles) every month before i moved Mother close to me. In the last 3-1/2 years, we were able to enjoy lunches out or at the dining room of her complex. I could take her to the doctor, or shopping, and I was able to be there in 20 minutes when there was an emergency. Which there was, more and more often. You also need to consider legal matters, from her property. will, a trust, powers of attorney, and medical matters. So she takes a fall at home. Does she have a "Do Not Resusitate" order inplace? Does she want to be kept alive by any and all means? Who signs the papers when she's taken to the hospital if she cannot? Who talks to the doctor if she has a stroke and cannot talk? Did you know that you need to have her permission on file with her doctor for the doctor to talk to you? Who is prepared to make all those decisions? Can you or your sister write and sign a check to pay her bills if she cannot do so? All matters to be considered. Bless you for being there for her. She'll need you more and more as time goes by. Ad know that there are many of us here who have shoulders for you to lean on! Hugs, Helene...See Morewhat I did this weekend (long, very long)

Comments (9)Do you have a Consumer Reports subscription? I checked my online version and in July 2015 they did a comparison (and an update in Sept 2015). They did not do the typical ratings but the article offered a lot of good information about choosing one. ...........................CONSUMER REPORTS: This is from the article : "What to look for in a medical alert System" It works for a user's specific disability. For example, a stroke survivor may need a device he or she can activate with one hand. It offers a choice of a wristband and/or neck pendant. Cords worn around the neck can pose a strangulation risk; wristbands may irritate those with skin ailments. It includes help buttons that can be wall-mounted near the floor in multiple rooms in case the user falls and isn’t wearing the pendant. It offers multiple choices for whom to contact if you need help, from emergency services to a friend or relative who lives nearby. It has a battery backup in case of a power failure. The base station can be contacted from anywhere on your property—even in your yard or at your mailbox. The company has its own monitoring center, in the U.S., and employs its own trained emergency operators (rather than contracting that function out). The monitoring center has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a nonprofit safety and consulting company. Choose the right medical alert system All systems (listed in alphabetical order, below) offer daily 24-hour monitoring services. All come with a waterproof neck pendant and wristband with a battery backup. Some offer a GPS mobile feature, which works when you are traveling away from home. Some also offer a mobile 911 phone, which places a call to local 911 services if you're out of your normal service range. It carries an additional fee. Some offer an automatic fall detection system, but they say it cannot detect 100 percent of falls, and the companies charge an extra fee for this service. Tip: As you shop, ask for quotes in writing because prices and services may change. .................................. Since the comparison is over 18 months I won't include the chart - it included 6 companies and they might not all be in your area. But the information above may help you select one. Several reviews mentioned that many have long term contracts that may be difficult to cancel. The user needs good wireless in their home. I wonder if your local Emergency Response service might be able to suggest one. Maire...See MoreOnline Color consult-- do they work?
Comments (18)I had virtually the same experience with Amy that sas95 did, Additionally, I sent her pics of rooms/windows and sight lines from space to space with info on compass direction so she'd have a reference point for the light. She wanted to see how spaces relate to each other and to know how the spaces would be used. I've been involved with paint and color for a long time as a decorative painter, had a faux finishing business, have painted murals, stenciled, stained designs onto floors, worked in show houses...... color doesn't scare me and 9 times out of 10 I've been happy with my paint choices in my homes (although trust me there have been some head scratchers!). But when faced with our first new build where everything is going to get painted at once and I know it's got to be fluid to work with ongoing decorating and furniture buying for quite some time, I wanted help. I had a direction in mind and wanted one *safe* non-color to use throughout the entire house which Amy understood. But she helped me, nudged me just a bit beyond my vision of safe because not only would it have been wrong but it would have been b-o-r-i-n-g. I get that it sounds counter intuitive getting color suggestions long distance but Amy has honed her process in such a way that the hurdles you anticipate just aren't an issue. And I'm confident Lori has an equally effective system that she uses. There has to be a rapport and I personally find MK to be off-putting but that's why there's chocolate and vanilla....See More- 10 years agolast modified: 9 years ago
