Barefoot Contessa when it's not a repeat, but it almost always is a repeat, Michael Chiarella's show, but it's not on as much as it used to be., Molto Mario, and Everyday Italian - can you tell I like Italian food? Like everyone else, I've all but quit watching the go to restaurants and eat network, aka the food network. I keep forgetting to set up the recorder on Saturdays to tape America's Test Kitchen. there was one Saturday I was working from home, so I looked up when it would be on, and what else might be on PBS that day. Sadly, most of the cooking shows are gone from their lineup. I used to love Jaques Pepin, but his show wasn't on the schedule. I like Top Chef, Iron Chef, and some of the competition shows, but that guy on Hell's Kitchen should really consider anger management counseling. I just don't get why anyone would want to work for him, much less consider that being a prize to strive for. They should make the losers be the ones to have to be executive chef at his restaurant. I really think his behavior borders on criminal, but since that show has got to be as real as championship wrestling, I imagine he'll never serve time for his behavior, since it's all probably an act. At least I hope so. I sure hope he doesn't treat his family that way. Sally

My DH was watching and I finally got sucked in for the last few episodes -- so I didn't watch all the lead-ups. One thing that occurred to me . . . until recently, and for the last 32 years, I lived in a small resort town. We had one grocery store, except for a glorious 2-year period with a real supermarket, with specialty foods -- it closed. So if my one store didn't carry an ingredient, or was out, I faced a 40 minute trip to find it, or change my menu -- which in reality, is what I did. For out-of-the-ordinary ingredients, I just had to plan ahead -- for my out of town shopping trips. Harissa -- not a chance! I wonder how many other fans live in areas where Jeffrey's exotic ingredients would be difficult to obtain. Incidentally, I'm now in a town with 4 (count 'em!!) supermarkets, the smallest of which is larger than my former one!! Oh, my!!!

really bad cooking shows??

I find a lot of great recipes on random blogs. You can tell pretty quickly the ones who can cook, so have a blog, and the ones who want a blog so try to cook. They might not have the kind of test kitchen homogenization that makes for foolproof results, but with underlying sameness, but for someone who knows how to cook and how to interpret and adapt for one's own kitchen, they're great! I find more great recipes in blogs than on cooking shows, for sure, and it's easier to find what one wants than in books. Never made a PW one, though, from either blog or show. I saw a part of a good bad cooking show on PBS today. It was part of the NHK world block, and I was using it to keep track of fifteen minutes before I had to leave the house. The Japanese woman who was cooking had pretty good English but not a lot of vocabulary. "Ingredients" was used, unmodified, to mean seasonings and flavorings specifically, as well as ingredients in general, and things like that. If one was watching rather than just listening it was intelligible. The host seemed to speak Japanese at least somewhat but spoke American with a Western accent and filled in some descriptions. She was demonstrating very simple food for very beginning cooks. The one I came in on looked like a vegetable stew, then there was a "Japanese omelette" (i.e., fritatta). Her recipes had the same quantity of seasonings/flavorings for each item so people wouldn't be scared off of cooking! That was the bad. Even if it was okay for what she was making, I shudder to think of people trying to do that with other recipes just by guess. OTOH, she was good about showing the basics, like how much salt was on her finger for a "pinch", and explaining why she worried the fritatta in the pan to loosen it. Neither dish looked particularly good, but they really were simple enough for a clueless in the kitchen viewer to make, and other than potentially being high in salt, they looked like things people should want to eat (veggies and eggs) rather than boxes of this and that, or colorless sludge. So it was good and bad, and for what it was aiming for, probably pretty good.

Guy - Guy - Guy -.........WHY ??? !!!

"Such is the way of the entertainment industry." And so are all the less than accurate reports of how obnoxious he is.......it is just part of being a public figure. Rumors and garbage get reported/printed all the time. Doesn't make any of it true. He owns a nonprofit foundation that provides funding for inner-city schools to introduce kids to cooking and the culinary arts. Also donates pretzel carts - where he got his culinary start at age 10 - for fundraising purposes. He is actively involved in the Make-A-Wish foundation, includes a Make-A-Wish family as his guest at every one of his DDD tapings, earned the Chris Grecius founders award from MAW, and is actively involved in the Special Olympics. btw, his sister (who has since passed way from cancer) was gay and he officiated at a group same-sex marriage of 101 couples. And many of the locations covered by DDD are owned by Jews, so yeah, he is obviously homophobic and anti-Semitic. Not!! And he's been happily married to the same woman for 22 years and has two quite charming and well-adjusted kids, one of whom is also a budding foodie. Boy, he really is a terrible and obnoxious person :-)

Interesting, we'll see how it goes. I love both Rach and Guy, only recognize two of the so called celebs, Lou Diamond Phillips and Cheech. The little blonde kid is really lost.

Tuned in a bit, but I just don't care for Racheal or Guy. I know a guy who was in one of the restaurants where Guy was filming his diners & dives show (something like that name) and he was a total ego maniac a$$ hole. Wouldn't talk to the "common" folk unless the camera was on.

Rather lackluster, I don't know that I would make a special point to watch it again.

That's disappointing, Dotmom, and the polar opposite of what I heard from the guys in Pittsburgh. Wonder which is the real Guy.

I only recognized Cheech and LDP too. I was hoping the crotch-grabbing, rapper guy would go first. He'll drive me crazy. And that lady with the lips - I had to turn away from the TV when she was talking because her lips didn't move with her words. What is her "celebrity"? Felt sorry for the kid that went first. Way out of his element. Give him kudos for trying though.

Not Food Networks best effort, in my opinion. Guy has been here twice doing his shows, and the only negetive I heard was he didn't really participate until the final filming was done. Even the corvette showed up seperatly in a car van.I wish they would come up with something different that the same competitions and obnoxious hosts. They lost their creativity along the way, for my tastes.

For those that missed it, you didn't miss much. However, check your schedule of the Food Network, mine shows a repeat on Wednesday at 11:00 p.m.

I wish the chefs would stick to cooking. Guy has that popular game show.....Minute to Win it. Blech
