Help me choose a stain color for my stairwell!

Our new home has American Cherry hardwoods throughout, except for the staircase (which was installed before we made up our mind on the rest of the flooring). The treads, handrail and newel posts are stain-grade oak. The exterior doors are fiberglass with an opaque cherry stain. I'm afraid of so many different shades of "cherry" clashing. We've already tried Minwax "Gunstock" on the treads, thinking it would blend (wrong!) and both Jacobean and Red Mahogany on the rail because a dark accent color appeals to me. We applied a filler first, but unfortunately, I still see a lot of the grain : (

My new thinking is that the treads, rails and newel posts should match, so as not to introduce so many wood tones. I'm thinking I need to switch to another brand as well, since none of these colors seem to look right with the red (multi-colored) floors and the Minwax "cherry" doesn't look very appealing.

I'm sorry; I don't know how to upload a picture yet.
