Wet Bar Backsplash ...advice needed!

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right forum to post in (have also posted in basement forums).We are building a simple wet bar that will be a back bar only, against a wall. It will be a 10 ft quartz counter (Cambria-Aragon) with some base cabs and some glass door wall cabs (Aristokraft- Sasparilla). We were thinking of getting a mirror for the central part of the backsplash and tiling around the rest of it for design. Here are my concerns/questions:

1. Are mirrored wet bars outdated these days? I wanted the mirror to open up the space a bit, but have not seen too many people put them in on a back bar only.

2. The wet bar is directly opposite to a sliding patio door that is facing south. Will there be too much glare on the mirror frm this? There is a 24' distance between the bar, and doors. The room is 16' wide.

Given this info (i wish I could post a picture...I'll try to soon), would you go with a mirror, or would it look better to tile the whole thing?

Perhaps your concerns posted above may be right -- would you consider putting up additional tiles?

Would a section of colorful glass tiles or a central section of decorative metal tiles work in your room decor?

Or how about adding/having a simple wall surface so you can hang an artwork or print that would work in your room? Or you could hang a clock or a starburst mirror (a mirror that could be easily changed out in the future)?

Why not try placing a simple framed mirror up (one you already have or can return?) to see if the glare is a problem? Remember, if you put glass shelving with glasses in front of the mirror, that will diffuse the glare and turn it into sparkle.

Hi, I dunno where you are in France, but if you're in the northern part of France (Loire valley and farther north), you should be able to find real slate tiles intended for outdoor terrace/patio paving in any DIY store. I do not see why you could not use those as a backsplash. If you're in the south, it is almost impossible to find slate as it is not considered a local material ... If you're looking for a better selection of tiles than the ones at Castorama and Leroy-Merlin, you should look at stores that are specialized in tiles and sanitaryware (here in Paris area, they are called CMR or Espace Aubade). I personnaly think that a slate backsplash would provide too much contrast ... I would look for a white/cream tile with a matte finish but an interesting texture (like the "Clays" series for Casamood) or something that evokes concrete ('Zoom' from Villeroy&Boch, 'Masterplan' from Lea Ceramiche in 'Grigio' shade), or glass mosaic with metallic effects (Vetro Metallico from Casamood). The later would recall the mettalic touch of your countertops ... I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess.

Teppy, In my gut I know that I will not do as good a job as you did if I try to paint on my own. You have excellent taste and are very meticulous. Me....not so much. I do have a laundry room I can experiment with if I need to. I am definitely going to get a quote from a painting company, think I found one, that paints woodwork, cabinet and such. They do a lot of work for builders and had excellent pictures online. I have to get an exterior quote as well. When I get closer to actually beginning I'll post before pictures. I tried previously but couldn't figure it out. Maybe I'll take a look again this weekend. Yes, there is enough room for walking if the seating is added. It would be so nice for entertaining, cooking with the kids, kids doing homework etc. We have an eating nook that accomodates only a 48" round table comfortablly so the extra space would be nice plus it's just more social. I want to compare the painting cost vs. refacing. I'm actually hoping it's not that different because then the KD w/the refacing company could be the GC for the whole job whereas if we go the painting route I'll have find a GC on my own. Will defenitely try to figure out the picture deal so I can post. Thanks for the responses. Z.

I just put a similar size wetbar in my basement. I opted for no backsplash (just the 3" granite one) because I didn't want it to look like a kitchen. I bought a framed mirror for above the sink because it's next to back yard s'more access and the kids wash their faces there, too.
I haven't installed the mirror yet or I'd take a picture.

I have a mirrored backsplash...or should I say "wall" on my built in bar. I love it. Everything just sparkles. The only word of caution I have is not to mirror the ceiling over the bar. The light bulb in the can overheats and shuts off due to the reflection on the mirror!

I think once we have all the cabinets and counters installed, we will buy a framed mirror and put it up to see how it looks (thanks for the advice sweeby). I was in a mirror store and the lady pointed me to a bronze finish mirror which she said people put up in wet bars. It has a smokeyish brownish tint, and seems to reduce the glare. Not sure if this will work with the colors we have chosen for the bar though....(Aristokraft sasparilla and cambria aragon countertops...stainless hardware and appliances.
