Against the half wall we built

Next to the frig (DH won't let me take off the protective wrap till we're done working)

We even brought our dining/kitchen table down so the electrician can install the chandelier hopefully tomorrow. Finally finally finally seeing progress.

I know it's not much in terms of "finished kitchen pics"; but compared to the rate things have been going this, for me, is monumental.

Wxman/Islandbreeze- To answer your question, the short story anyway, I went a bit overboard on my protection with ground heat. I had my suspicions but I wanted to run it by Jimhardy to get a more experienced gardner's opinion as well. We concur... Quick history, this was my first year wintering a large trachy and I wanted to be on the safe side. I bought the tree along with another the same size for my friend. He protected much less then me, but with the same enclosure setup and his looks like the day it was covered! The difference between our heating was the issue. He used a thermocube with Xmas lights and a CFl fixture just like me. Both our trees were kept between 35 and 45F all winter because of the thermocube- verified by remote thermometers. Where I went wrong was thinking all the extra ground heat would be more helpful. I had a rope light around the base of the trunk under the mulch as well as a bunch of mini xmas lights under the mulch all over the ground inside the enclosure. All that heat was trapped down by the mulch. Basically I dried the tree out by the end of winter. The ground was very warm and BONE dry. Feeder roots dried out/could not get any moisture. Sadly this all happened from mid January until early March. Tree was fine when I checked on it during a short Jan. thaw. Humidity in there was high, tree looked fine. First of March, a totally different story! Funny, my friend did not even mulch the outside bottom of his enclosure or place leaf bags like I did. He lives 30 miles from me and is a full half zone colder too. I felt mine was bullet-proof, but I guess I learned a valuable lesson. The tree lost/will lose most of its mature fronds. It is alive and the spear did not pull and the newest spears (3 of them) are moving. It even tried to open a few inside the protection while tied up over the winter. Those will be lost also as they are pretty dried out but at least the new ones are ok. Jim thinks, and I hope he is right, it will grow a lot of new fronds this summer, up to 10 even. That makes sense as it needs the green badly in order to remain alive. The tree will be ok thank God, but it won't stop me from giving it a big brother (14-year old) in the same planter... Another observation, the rope light used looks burnt inside and blackened. I tested it yesterday and noticed it gets very hot, much more than it did when I first installed it. It's only supposed to burn like 8 watts. I think it malfunctioned. It was supposed to be waterproof also. Damn fire hazard is going in the garbage! I'll try to post a picture of it, you guys would get a laugh. On a different note, I think there is something to that brown vs grey trunk/hair color of mature trachys. I've thought it might be a way to tell male/female. The trees my friend and I got last spring, mine has the fatter and grey trunk. His the same height, same grower, same age crop and from the same seed (so the grower said), has a more slender and very brown trunk. I've also observed a difference in my younger trachys. My approx 7+year old which is 4.75' tall now with 1.5' of trunk is definitely grey. A similar one, another Monrovia trachy, brown and more slender, but leaves about the same in rigidity, shape, and color. My smaller ones, 3 to 5 year olds, all more on the brown side so far. I wonder... By the way, I broke down and planted my 4+' yucca thompsoniana yesterday. I couldn't resist. It looks great. Its head is starting to lean as it is beginning to form its second head. I trimmed back a lot of the dead leaves to tidy it up and can now see where the new head is forming. This thing is going to be really cool...

oh diana, i'm so glad you got a camera. i certainly learned for next time to always take pictures. barnomom...more than three? the cruets are one piece, the pitcher and glasses a REAL set and the napkins are the third item. the mag certainly does not count as a swap item. funny that you mention "more than three" is to this swap box and not a comment to some of the others. i must be missing something. diana, enjoy it all. i absolutely loved each item i sent to you and certainly hope you will for quite some time to come. maryanne p.s. michelle, nice dog outfit. you are obsessed with those skeletons LOLOL

Thank you everyone for bearing with me as I wade through all the different options. budge1: glad to hear I am no alone in second guessing all my decisions. Do give us all an update! I certainly have not made any decisions. I bought a yard of drapery fabric at CC because I wanted to see all the colors in the fabric and I know that is part of my indecision. I'm also thinking of making a couple of bolster cushions for the bergere chairs with the material. BTW, squirrel, I never bought any chair fabric. The chairs were always meant to be a focal point and if you recall, many of the fabrics I was considering were $$. I brought in all fabrics and swatches of the existing wall colors to get their opinion as computer monitors can be deceptive. They first off suggested a gold, but did see the issue of it looking good near the Oat Straw--since both are neutrals, one with more green, the other with more yellow. Then they suggested going a shade darker than the sofa/drapes, but didn't seem too enthused about a terra cotta. At BM, I fould a lovely shade of terra cotta, audubon russet; that is until the salesperson told me it would be too intense to put on all the walls. If I took it a shade less, we would then be thinking about pink. He started steering me towards Wilmington Tan and Tyler Taupe. He liked Tyler Taupe the best as he felt it blended well with all my fabrics plus the Oat Straw. Unfortunately, they were out of the sample paint for Tyler Taupe though it will come in tomorrow and they don't make it in Willington Tan so I'd have to buy a quart. So, tomorrow I plan to go again and pick up some samples, In the meantime, here are the swatches for you to see. The russet is to the upper left near the flower (I tried to match to that), and then left to right are: Willmington Tan, Oat Straw, Tyler Taupe, and False Cypress. I am so confused right now which direction to go--everyone seems to have a different take on it. At this point, I do know I want to paint the entry--the living room I am still at a loss. The more I see the fabrics together the more I like them. I just need something to tie it all together at the same time be an accent to the trim which is in Swiss Coffee. I know these are not on the wall, but perhaps you can take a look and at least let me know if I'm headed in the right direction and which samples to buy.

trailrunner, my friend also said she likes it black (the table legs). If I could photoshop I could try it out in white before I paint it. I really want to get away from the black but it might be better. For the table it just had paint on the bare wood. sanded it with orbital sander (took 3 or 4 days) and then applied 4 thin coats of water based polyurethane (sanding in between coats) and waiting a day between each coat. No stain thanks for your encouragement! I see what you mean about the tile not being french country but it does have going for it .. it is neutral. I hadn't wanted to put a rug under the table because it is just such a PIA to clean the rug. Right now it is soo easy care but you aren't the first one to mention a rug so the space must need it LOL I like persian rugs in blue and yellow. there are a few I like Or a natural sisal or jute. But now that I think about it with the tile being natural.. a natural color rug on top of it won't be adding much! But then again, it could work. How about the table legs And the bench a butter yellow? Or the table legs and the bench white? If the table Legs And the bench were both in white .. Then I go do this large hutch piece for the other side of the fireplace in the painted yellow? I gotta have something painted the yellow LOL plus I am planning to get white painted counter stools for the breakfast bar this is so hard. I love that table - looking good!

We are still fussing with getting the upper cab over the baking center mounted. Had to move some electrical lines in the attic and now DH is wiring the plugmold and lights underneath (while we can have the cabinet on the floor, upside down.

I find myself walking around the half built kitchen talking to myself and go through the paces of how I'll use the space. I"m going to have so much more workspace then I ever had!

melaska... the frig is a freestanding Liebhher. It was the only free standing all stainless frig I could find that was true counter depth.

greenhouse... are you referring to the dimension of the table or frig? Table 70x30, an antique I found on craigslist that was in terrible shape and took me a few months to re-finish. To answer old house. The color started out as like 75& Halycon Green I think and was tweaked 3 times at SW. I kept going back and having them add black, silver, blue till it felt right.
If you're referring to the frig is like 81" tall, 24D, and 35 w.

OK.. more table clarification for those who weren't around the couple of years ago I snagged this piece. I found it on craigslist. Some family had inheritied it from their grandpa who lived in rural area. He had always had it in his garage. The grandpa had it as a little boy in his kitchen so I estimate it to be at least 80 years old but that's pure conjecture. It was a wreck when I got it...

And took me quite some time to sand it down and experiment with different stains/paint colors/techniques. Apparantely when they built these things they were meant as workhorses and it was built with whatever wood was around. There was mahjony, poplar, birch, maple... at least that's what we think we identified. A stained color simply did no work so I decided to paint. I painted and re-stripped/sanded that poor piece so many times.
So... for $250 and lots of labor I made myself a unique piece that's I'll use to death. The people were kinda funny, they had me on the phone with the brother up north and no one would sell it to me until they were certain I would do it justice. I wish I had kept their email so I could send them a pic.

You know me--I'm all about antique pieces in the kitchen and your bakers table looks great. Did you decide to go with a wood top or are you still looking for the right piece of marble? Either way, you're going to love working on it.

Looks great, but I can't help but wonder... Does the left hand door of the fridge clear the top of the table when it opens? Will it still clear the top of the table if you install a marble top? Could you potentially dent your fridge door?

Checked it morton... plenty of clearance unless I get something thicker then 3cm stone. Plus DH would always be able to take down the legs a tad if that were the case.

Just a minute while I pick my jaw up off the table! What a beautiful baking table! I am fluorescent green with jealousy, even though I wouldn't have anyplace to put it in my kitchen! LOL! You did an amazing restoration job--completely amazing! And with that marble piece on top--I'm speechless! Your fridge and floor also look terrific. Yeah for progress! Can't wait to see more!
