My boring kitchen needs some pop with color++

I might have finally settled on a paint color for my boring kitchen. Now I have a truly blaaah kitchen with Putnam Ivory walls, beige backspalsh, beige counters, beige floor tiles white appliances and orange oak cabinets.

What color?colors can I add for some interest. ... counter accessories, window treatment, floor mats, and wall art.

Thanks for all your help in my past posts.

You DO need help!

First, redefine your view. You don't have a boring kitchen. You have a neutral backdrop to launch your decorating project.

So tell us a little about what you like, some non-decor things you're attracted to, what environment you live in (some ideas that might work well in a cabin in the mountains would look odd in a little ranch in the desert).

What things do you have in the house that you LOVE? That's always a good place to start.

Being tasteful can be really confining. At this point, 3 things that don't match look odd. 23 things that don't match look "eclectic"!

Gray flooring is very trendy - which means it will become the dreaded "dated". While light gray as a neutral will always be useful, the extreme over use of gray will turn on itself - just as over use of oak did. If this was a cheap laminate gray floor with a limited lifespan - no big deal (except the waste in the landfill) but you had better love this expensive floor 10 years from now when the HGTV crowd will say "yuck - look at all that gray" - just like they say "Yuck, look at all that oak" now. If you will love it, go ahead. I have my oak kitchen which I like just fine. However, a natural wood floor will add color and will go with just about any style thrown at it. It is best if one applies the trendy colors to easily changed surfaces - like paint for walls, decor, curtains, upholstery and even a backsplash if it is not a huge expense. Listen to SJ - she is a flooring expert. The gray, gray rooms just looked washed out - especially when all the new design pics I am seeing are showing color.

The kitchen looks clean and functional. As @kris_zone6 has said, and other commenters likely will, take a deep breath and live in it for 6 months to a year before doing anything beyond simple decorating - (i.e., painting the walls, adding rugs, art on the walls etc.). Don't start painting cabinets. You need time to get a feel for the house and identify what works and doesn't. After a time, you may even decide to live with it as is for a few years and save up for a complete revamp. Or after awhile you may be happy with how the kitchen functions and decide to keep the cabinets and paint them. I guess my advice would be to don't let your excitement and enthusiasm lead you to make really quick decision. Good luck and congratulations on the new home!

@ginatay124 I completely agree about the pillows. There is a throw in the basket under the coffee table, but it’s an ehhh one. The coffee table is fairly new but I did buy it used to refinish the top. I have a qt. of Urbane Bronze and I need to sand and paint it. Previously we had an upholstered ottoman. It is now downstairs because of water cups spilling on it, etc. Our daughter is 8 so this is just easier for now. Floor lamp is a definite yes but clueless there. My husband has said repeatedly we need one, but i don’t know what style goes and does’t look like an afterthought. Any ideas? We also will need new curtains because those are off white/beige. But I’ll buy white ones unless someone here says emphatically no 😜

Beige can be beautiful! Very calm. Serene. And a great backdrop.

My advice is to find the wall art first. Find something you really love. Then look in the art for interesting colors.

Take the Cezanne above, for example. Look at the top of the leftmost peach. There's a swirl of an almost red color. You could match that in a large vase for some pop. See the aqua on the inside of the bowl? That would make a great curtain. Fresh and crisp looking, and great with beige. Plus the more obvious greens, yellows and browns, of course, but who wants to be obvious? :-)
