White Lily flour is changing

Oh no! Just when I discover a good thing, it changes. White Lily is shutting down their 100-year-old flour mill in Knoxville. Bakers aren't happy.

Why do conglomerates think they can improve on something? Why do they have to meddle? A change in ownership is one thing, but messing with success makes absolutely no sense at all.

An analogy from the world of music: in the early 60's Leo Fender, guitar amp pioneer, developed a life-threatening infection. He thought he was gonna die, so he took care of all his worldly affairs, including selling the amplifier division to CBS. The CBS engineers looked at the schematics for the amps Leo was making and said, "We can do better than that. These circuits are horribly inefficient." Well, they 'optimized' the circuits, and you can guess the result. They totally screwed up the amplifiers' sound. They lost credibility and market share nearly overnight, and it took years for them to recover--mostly by changing in large part back to the original designs. To this day, however, if you have a vintage 'pre-CBS' Fender amp you can command a huge premium over brand new ones.

Shame on you, Smuckers! Leave it alone.

It was all an experiment I have 3, 1 I kept in unheated sunporch where it's been quite cold. It's still compatively small, it's had nights as low as 20 degrees out there (but obviously covered).. the 2nd was moved to sunporch about 3 weeks ago, once I rudely transplanted it (if that's what you call yanking it up by it's poor leaves) into a 12x17" pot... it's smaller than the one in house, maybe a bit more than 2 feet tall byt 1 foot wide, but not small, just not in bloom yet...One is in house. The one in house started blooming about 6 days ago (when tuber planted in Feb), it's GORGEOUS, all my complaining from before aside). LIGHTLY fragrant, meaning you have to put your nose right up to it. But it's not an unpleasant fragrance at all... very clean. The blooms are comparatively small (maybe2x2) compared to the huge leaves... It's..I'm sure, restrained in size by the pot, but it's currently 33" tall by 32" wide (almost symmetrical!) The pots with the 2 largest are 17x17", that's as large as I had... They probably would've appreciated larger, but...So if started and kept warm, flowering time took 2 months, which is amazing, maybe 9 weeks... I learned not to keep them TOO moist, or a black edge occurs on a leave or flower. Moisture, yes, boggy, no... the 2 pots don't have GREAT drainage... I won't be able to lift the upstairs pot down and outside when it's time by myself. I don't know how long they bloom. Inside, the stretch to sun (south and west big windows)... but outside the tag says part shade. I won't know how to store them over winter, once done and died back... and am afraid at how much larger the tuber may be.. I can't imagine growing ouside, they again the tag says hardy to zone 6 (I'd mulch heavily) as they need warmth and by the time the ground would warm enough for growth, and the ROOM needed for growth.... well, I guess it would work... That's another year... I'd recommend...for the leaves alone. 11" long, brillant green, prominent enough veining.. If in pots, not for those with bad backs.. Amy

Perry's Water Gardens created a "Fire Opal", which I think is intensely pink. I'm really surprised that this other company used the same name. The color on the box it was in had a pic of a purple lily and in the description it said "Color:purple" I tried to call the company, but it wasn't listed. I did call a company in Wisconsin who had the exact looking box online and she said it wasn't there's. I've noticed this year that the stores no longer have the "purple" one. It was a total rip-off. It was much pinker last year. This year, it started out pale pink, and now is putting out some pale pink ones and also white ones. I counted 11 blossoms yesterday. Isn't it funny how the less-desirable things tend to be more prolific? garyfla "robust white" hahaha Maybe I should just wear purple-colored glasses when I look at it. :)

Lainey, the links for all three photos worked perfectly when I answered - or else I would not have done so. Nor does an answer have to be po-faced to be accurate. Hair at the axils of leaves and flower pedicels, as well as on young flower buds, is a strong indication of L. davidii in the background of an asiatic hybrid. But then, most asiatic hybrids can claim that.

I'm with kprp. Mislabeling happens, but if you buy from the reputable sellers it's rare. I have tended to go with places that specialize whether it be hostas, lilies, daylilies etc. and I am rarely disappointed. I have to agree that Silk Road is a great lily, though it's an Orienpet not an Oriental. Move it or trade it to someone for something else. The orientals don't do well in my garden either, so I don't buy them. Just a side note, I would love to hear from someone who has orientals that FLOURISH! They must be happy somewhere and I'm curious as to where it is.

Oh man, this stinks.

It's hard as all get out to find White Lily even here in Virginia, and when I do I normally get between 5 and 10 bags.

A couple for me, a couple for Mom, and a couple for my Aunt.

How sad... Check for these comparable Southern all-purpose flour options for White Lily - Martha White, Gladiola, Red Band. Like White Lily, they run 7.5-9.5 percent protein and are best used for pie crusts, biscuits, quick breads and muffins.

And there is nothing wrong with those brands, grainlady, -
but they're not White Lily. Guess I'll got back to Red Band if I find the White Lily has changed appreciably. I keep White Lily self-rising on hand for biscuits, quick breads, and some cornbread recipes. It really is the best.

Oh, my!! Alas and Alack!
Does any one know what going to happen to White Lily Cornmeal and White Lily Cornbread Mix. I didnt find a single word in the story about the future of other products. I've been having family buy it in Atlanta and ship it ... Shipping costs as much as the product.

And I finally found a place to buy it, too. I didn't at the time, cause it was bleached. Is all White Lily bleached? Anyway, now I'm wishing I went ahead and bought it, but it looks like they've already made the changes, or did I misunderstand the article?

sally2 - Some of White Lily flour is bleached and some unbleached. They have a High-Protein Unbleached Bread Flour (I've never tried it) and an Unbleached Self-rising Flour (milled from soft red winter wheat). I used to get a bag of the unbleached self-rising flour when we traveled to Tennessee (from our home in Kansas). It was never available here and was kind of a novelty to have. Guess I'll just stick to milling my own flour. I haven't purchased any commercial flour since the prices started going up and just make everything wholegrain.

re Martha White flour:

I used to live in New Orleans and would buy Martha White flour & products because it was a cool regional brand. After reading the article on White Lily, I went to Martha White's web site to see if they still exist. Guess what...at the bottom of the Martha White web site it says "J. B. Smuckers." :(
