Buy LG or Maytag Epic from Home Depot?

Home Depot is having 10% off on all the appliance, plus gift cards. I would love to buy brand new front load washer and dryer. I am debating between LG or Maytag Epic.

Please help me with decision making.

LG WM2455HW

LG WM0742HWA (steam washer)

or

Maytag Epic MFW 9700SQ

Maytag Epic MFW 9800TQ

Please let me know which one will perform well with least amoutn of problems. Not sure if should buy extended warranty (which I normally don't believe) at $99 for four years.

I can't comment on either of these, but I bought a Maytag Bravos HE washer/dryer set from Home Depot in May and have been totally satisfied with them. I have read so much here and elsewhere about problems with front loaders accumulating mold and mildew, and the Bravos HE washer's capacity is at least as big, if not bigger, I decided to go with it. Plus, I like the convenience of all the top-loading washer features in an HE washer.

We got great Home Depot rebates, also have Maytag rebates available, and I did purchase the extended warranties at $99 for four *more* years (they already come with one-year warranties), which means our machines are under warranty for five years.

Since just one service call can easily total $100 or more, I thought the extended warranties were a bargain.

We bought the 9800TQ Maytag from Lowes this past Saturday night. Installed it myself Sunday, and have given it a pretty good workout since Sunday morning. It was on sale for 808$ and it has worked perfectly from towels to silk shirts. No complaints so far. The pedestal helps out for storage as well.

I bought a five year extended warranty for my LG stackable, washer and dryer. I always buy extended warranties and actually recently realize that I only purchased one warranty which ended up being covered only on the washer because I used it for the washer first. I had a water leak and when they came out to pull it out and see why it was leaking it was the hose and I was told that my warranty doesn’t cover the hose. I ended up having to pay $200 to have them replace the hose because I cannot pull the stackable washer and dryer away from the wall myself, when they came out to do the work, I also discovered that my dryer, which was a steam dryer had never been hooked up. However, I did purchase all the parts to hook up to steam dryer. I always wondered why there was never seem to be moisture in the dryer, but I just figured that was the way it was supposed to be, so long story short after contacting everybody under the sun because they sent me all over the place. I was told that since it’s been two years, they would not warrant the fact that the delivery and the installation team did not hook up my steam on my dryer and that I was responsible for that. So they have finally offered me $250 gift certificate. I have not been able to use the steam which I thought I was using for two years and now I have to try to find someone that can pull the washer and dryer out to hook up the water and the hose for the steam dryer, since my gift card only covers products purchased at Home Depot. I have to come up with the cash to hire someone to do the work. I have always bought my appliances at Home Depot and I have always bought warrantees at Home Depot but from this day forward I will never purchase any appliance from Home Depot. This was very disappointing.

Renclothes, Thanks for your posts. Actually, the machine is a 4.0 CF (I'll post a link below). Maybe that model was revamped from a 3.8 to a 4? I don't know. Mine is an "SQ1" if maybe that's the difference. ??? I have no idea; I haven't bought a washer and dryer in literally 23 years! And noooo, no pedestals, blast! That would have made it the deal of the century, for sure!!! ;o) Thanks again for your posts! I did buy the machines, and they will be delivered Tuesday. SOOOOO excited! Maytag Epic vs. Whirlpool Duet

I joined gardenweb to post on hvac but the second thing I have been dying to do is post on the Duet washer. Mine replaced an older front loading Maytag Neptune that was great for our clothes but broke down too often. Whirlpool bought Maytag and the Epic is the same as the Duet...we bought the Duet. I hate it. What I mean is...I hate it! I have only had it a few months and should have listened to the reviews I read before I bought it. I read about tangled clothes and snagged towels. I have no problems with clothes being clean. I use HE Tide and a bit of Biz (HE amount) and always Spray & Wash stains because my kids are 6, 9, 10 and quite frankly, are little dirty animals. Main issues: 1. The clothes, especially adult size, but long pants and sleeves on kids too, get tangled around each other--alot. Mine look just like the picture posted already. The saleman told me to jam in every towel or 20 jeans, etc. and push the door closed. I have never done that and can't imagine it. Sometimes it is so tangled, I have to pull about half the ball of clothes out and let them fall all over the floor as I untangle each item. 2. There is so little water that things end up nearly dry. Good, you think--but they are so dry, wrinkles are setting in before you even put them in the dryer and then the dryer really sets in those creases--especially the jeans. I also find some things, especially towels and t-shirts are noticeably less soft. 3. Towels, especially the really good, plush (expensive) ones that you love, come out snagged--alot, big long snags. I am guessing there are burrs or something inside the drum holes or something in there catching the loops. We are building a new house and this machine will not be coming with us because it aggravates me so. Here are some of solutions I came up with to help make laundry less aggravating with this machine. 1. I never pack it too full. I would rather do an extra load than take the extra time to separate the clothes to put in the dryer. I feel they probably get cleaner when there is less to get twisted around each other anyway. 2. To combat wrinkles I never spin on high. I will do normal wash, med spin or I will even go to heavy duty wash so I can access the low spin button. This keeps them wetter. My old Maytag Neptune dryer has a sensor so it runs only until it senses they are dry and works great. I keep a spray bottle of water nearby and spray the jeans and pants legs' creases and smooth out the wrinkles then do a loose fold before I throw them in the dryer. I also shake out the shirts to their normal shape. It takes time but it does help. 3. The towels...well they snag. My only solution so far is to never do a load of strictly towels. Towels alone in a load guarantees snags on some. I try to mix a few towels in my other loads so they have a fighting chance to stay away from the enemy--wherever it is. As for avoiding problems like moldy odor and the such, I try not to leave things in overnight, or throw them in a basket or leave door open if I don't dry things right away and then leave the door open when not in use. My old Neptune had a class action law suit about mold issues, although I never had the problem, so I am precautionary about that. I also wash my cleaning rags once a week or so in just bleach and that may help. Sorry for the long drawn out deal but I have been perturbed about this thing and have never joined a forum to vent. Although reviews I read elsewhere before I bought mention the snagged towels, I don't see it as much in this forum so I think it is not a complete design flaw and something in only some of them. We are under waranty and I also have the extended warranty. Maybe something can be done about that...a new drum or find a screw or something. I will make that call today and see what they say. Good luck to those who choose this washer or if you already have it and have these issues. If anyone would like to recommend a fantastic front loader with no problems, I am all ears. I may look at the LG or Bosch when we move.

We just got our LG steam washer and dryer delivered this afternoon, after two loads I am smitten. They look beautiful, the laundry is cleaner and softer than ever, and I got to repaint the laundry room!

Definitely go for the LG; I have always had excellent experiences with their products. If the warranty is just $99/4 years, go for it. That is just over $2/month, well worth it just in case. I don't do extended warranties either, but for a high dollar purchase (especially something as gadget-laden as a washer) I do get them, I have probably broken even over the years.

I just bought the LG WM0742HWA and the matching dryer - LOVE THEM! I've only had them for about two weeks, but I had no idea I could actually enjoy doing laundry - but I do! The jumbo capacity means I do laundry less frequently, and my clothes are wonderfully clean (after 5 years with a less than stellar Kenmore front loader w/ a very small load capacity). Home Depot's extra incentives sold us. :)

I also liked the 2455 model (that was my original choice after I made peace with not being able to have the pretty cherry or blue colored ones that were a fair bit more money on a more expensive model), but opted for the SteamWasher instead. I compared the minor differences between the two, and concluded that the 0742 was the right one for us. And at our HD, the prices for the washers were the same (the 0742 is more expensive on the website), and the matching dryer was actually a bit less than the matching dryer for the stackable.

I never really considered a Maytag, so I can't help you with the comparison between the two.

I bought the GE Harmony, which I was told is made by LG. I bought it at Lowes, because the salesman at Home Depot lied to us about them having Sunday delivery, which was important to us.

I also purchased the extended warranty (4 years for I think $99). I normally think they are a ripoff, but since I had so many problems with my Maytag, this is peace of mind for me.

Im sending back my LG 2455. I loved the look and it seemed to do well cleaning, but it terribly noisy. pump noise and vibration spin noise was out of this world. Im trying a Whirlpool duet next.

Kon, it sounds like your machine is not level. Is it on a solid floor? Adjust the feet, it will quiet the machine.

We have the LG 2688 washer and the 8377 dryer in blue, LOVE them.

I have LG 2233 front loader, and it's pretty darn quiet. I really love the machine, it cleans very well and is fun to use. I can't believe I look for laundry to wash just so I can use the machine!

its perfectly level. EVen had 2 different service calls on it and they both said the noise is just the way the all are. I had them check the level and they both said it was good. The floor is rock solid, service guy even commented that for it being on a 2nd floor the floor was perfectly still. Its the loud drain pump and the vibration that killed me. Like I said before laundry is right next to my office and I need a quieter machine. Darn it! I did like the set otherwise.

Kon, can you insulate your walls? We did this while our house was being built, we snuck in and added soundproof insulation between a lot of the walls before the drywall went up. If you know how to hang drywall (or know someone who does) it might be a less expensive alternative to tear down your walls and insulate them.
