Any idea what these dishes are for?

My mother-in-law passed these down to me some time ago, and I have no idea how they're supposed to be used. I have four sets of them just like the set in the picture. The color is more terra-cotta, by the way, and on the back it says Senor Pico 1964.

I dunno, but it's great for a wine and cheese party. Place for Crackers and different cheese and fruit. Appetizers? Relish? Deviled Eggs?

my first guess is an antipasto, but then the divided of the larger dish could be for 2 kinds of veggie..

couldn't find senor pico dinnerware or pottery. ebay didn't have anything under that name...

Just finished cleaning up. Whew. For a weekday night, this is kind of a late one. I'm ashamed to say that I didn't, ultimately, do anything too exciting. The parents let me know that they ate fish, so I mostly fell back on old standards. I had only about 3 hours to do the shopping and make the meal, and figured better safe than sorry. Here is the "in progress" view. I'm very anal about having all my stuff cut, marinated, and ready before any heat starts. We had chicken and shrimp shao mai and steamed dumplings. Then a vegetarian hot and sour soup. Turns out that batons of pork can be swapped for matchsticks of dried bean curd, and powdered vegetable stock mix does a passable job subbing for chicken stock. I hunted up every variety of dried mushroom in the house - black, shiitake, brown, and some weird chanterelle-like fungus - and made a mushroom stirfry with snap peas coated in honey and tofu soft-cooked in veggie stock. Then a fish - perch maybe? I forget - cleaned, scaled, scored, marinated, and deep fried in the wok, then covered with stewed tofu strips and mushrooms. It was cute. The vegetarians ate it. A little. A chicken and candied-almond dish. Broiled pork spare ribs. Etc. The French girl had been deprived of meat, I think. She filled her plate 3X. I beamed. I felt like a Jewish grandmother. "Eat! Eat!" Thank you all for your ideas and help. I bookmark these threads and come back to them for recipes and inspiration. This thread was particularly rich in dishes and recipes!

Hi there, from a fellow Minnesotan! I like the idea of three bean salad, and you could easily put that together in a hotel room and the day before! How about picking up a cold shrimp cocktail from the supermarket deli? Or a pound cake and some strawberries for dessert? Here ae a couple more ideas to add to your list of considerations: White Corn Salad 2c frozen shoepeg white corn 3/4c chopped roma tomato 1/2 c chopped cucumber 2T chopped green bell pepper 3T white wine vinegar 1-1/2 tsp olive oil 1 tsp Dijon mustard tsp salt 1/8 tsp ground black pepper 1 clove garlic, minced Combine vegetables in bowl, toss. Combine remaining ingredients in a jar and shake vigorously. Pour over corn mixture and toss well. Serves 4 From Cooking Light magazine, date unknown Make the orzo for this one before leaving home and just kkep it chilled in a zip lock bag. Greek Orzo Salad 1c uncooked orzo 2c chopped cucumber 1\-1/2c cherry tomatoes, quartered 1c feta cheese, crumbled 1/2c chopped onion 1/2c chopped fresh parsley 1/2c chopped black olives 2tsp salt 1/4tsp pepper Dressing: 1/3c extra virgin olive oil 1/3c lemon juice 1tsp minced garlic ½ tsp salt 1/4tsp pepper Cook orzo, cool, place in bowl with prepared vegetables. Toss with dressing and chill If you can keep the fruit cold, you could make this in your hotel room, too. Super easy! Sunny Fruit Fiesta 1 cantaloupe, halved and seeded ½ honeydew, seeded 1/4c sugar 1/4c fresh lime juice 2T fresh lemon juice 1T orange-flavored liqueur (optional) 1-1/2 tsp grated lime zest 1c fresh sliced strawberries 1c black or red seedless grapes Using a melon ballr scoop cantaloupe and honeydew into balls, set aside. or just cut fruit into bite size chunks In large glass or ceramic bowl, combine sugar, lime juice, lemon juice liqueur and lime zest. Stir well to dissolve sugar. Add fruit and toss gently to combine. Cover and refrigerate at least one hour to blend flavors, stirring once or twice. Spoon the fruit mixture into serving bowls or hollowed out melon halves, dividing evenly. Serves 6. **For a tropical version, substitute kiwi slices, papaya or pineapple chunks, or mango cubes. Add a little grated fresh ginger, and maybe a dash of coconut extract. Linda

Ideas for pretty dish drying racks

You get all of the residue off the plates before putting them into the dishwasher? That's the mistake, you must put dirty dishes into the dishwasher and then the soap can act on the dishes, otherwise nothing gets clean. You should also put the pots and the pans in the dishwasher and then you run the dishwasher every night. The only thing you cannot put in is aluminum and anything that is marked that it should not go into the dishwasher. I recommend that you read up on proper dishwasher use as you are really making a lot more work for yourself. The roll up over the sink rack is simply fabulous, provided that the bulk of your dishes are being done in the dishwasher. It does not hold plates.

I found this eBay auction, which leads me to believe Senor Pico may have been a restaurant.

No, in 1964 he'd been out of his parents' house for a long time.

Well I don't know but it sure is neat looking.

I also like that pottery on the e-bay auction. Why don't you e-mail that seller and ask her?

From Google searching, it looks to be a restaurant. If you click the link, and then click on the pics...you can see these 'plates' being used in their dishes.

I think they are Really cool!!

This is very interesting and I would love to know what that dish was used for. Here's some more info.

According to drinkers lore the origins of Senor Pico were as follows.

In the 1960's San Francisco's famous Trader Vics opened up a chain of Mexican restaurants named Senor Picos. The restaurants only lasted several years in the USA (although overseas some are still in existance). To supplement revenue, and for the benefit of the tourist trade, they merchandised a number of rather racy items that could be purchased on site at their restaurants. Most of these involved Senor Pico chasing down and finally wooing a reluctant Senorita Pico.

These (R Rated) items today are highly sought after.

Ha! All I have to do now is whip up some Mexican Thai food! LOL

Good sleuthing, ladies! I just ran across this auction. The logo appears to be the same as the Bangkok restaurant. My M-I-L may well have gone to Thailand, but I know she went to California.

Me, if I was using them, chicken curry!
Little sides for the multi sides for curry.
Bigger ones for the rice and largestest for the curry!

Now that's what I would use it for.

I'd use it for tacos. Tacos in the middle dish, xour xream, chopped tomatoes, shreddeed cheddar cheese, etc, in the smaller ones around it.

Looks like you can use with something that uses different sauces such as chips & dips. Put lots of chips in the large dish and serve with different type of dips.

Dunno why, but the more I look at it, the more I see... kidneys!

Fondue was very popular in '64.

Could that be what it is? Maybe the big one for two kinds of meat pieces, and the small sections for the various dipping sauces.

The minute I saw the dishes, without even reading about the Senor Pico logo, my thought was, mexican food. In the large platter, the smaller section would be for rice and/or beans. The larger section for tacos, burritos, whatever. The smaller dishes are for chopped onions, black olives, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

Love them - I would like to have for serving a pile of fresh veggies in the center and several dips around the edges. Or chicken nuggies in the center and various dips Or, roasted veggies in the center and several dips. They look really great for appetizer entertaining.
My opine - keep and use.

Just thought of another, since you have four sets, when serving just another couple, how cool to do a main(chick or perhaps pork tenderloins or perhaps beef tenderloins) in the middle and sides in the smaller. Could make some herb rice, bean side. tasty vegies, perhaps a melty cheese, potato to dip into the cheese, fresh veggies.

OK, I am now going to bed. I love to cook and entertain and your "new found" serve ware is very cool. I hope you enjoy it. So many possibilities.

You are a very creative lady and I am sure you will use them well!

PS I will bring dessert

Plates in Mexican restaurants are customarily run under a salamander to melt cheese etc.

The dishes are probably heat safe for that reason. Having the separate side dishes for salsa, pico, limes, peppers, radishes and guacamole allows those foods to stay chilled and not warm up by being placed on the hot plate.

I'd love a set of those dishes. Lucky you.

Looks like a 'fondu' plate to me, where each plate had places for things to dip the meat in. yummmmm
