Sapphires, from reading both recipes I'd say it would be the hard candies shaped like little lemons as in the picture on the link I posted.

I know you said they aren't "lemony" enough for your taste, but I think adding the additional lemon peel will remedy that just fine.

Boy Annie it is a shame we don't live closer, since I know you love all things lemon. BF doesn't like lemony things, which just about rules out me making any lemony treats. As with all sweets, I'd have to rely on him to help me eat them up, since the amount I can consume is miniscule. He eats very little sweets too, so even things we both like, banana bread for example, often spoils before we get it all eaten. I have to be more diligent about freezing stuff. But the freezer is in the back of the basement and we often forget to get stuff out of there.

Anyway, those cookies sound divine! I miss the days when I worked at a college and could always leave a tray out for passing hungry students. Now where I work everyone doesn't eat sweets either. I took in a tray of brownies and hardly any got eaten, the ones who did take some were mostly by high school and college volunteers we had show up. Ah to be that young again! I weighed 108 in college! I now weigh 145, and don't eat all that differently since I have always rationed my treats. I do a whole lot more sitting though! And back then, I had more help from friends eating stuff up too!

L, if we lived closer together, we could be dangerous. (grin) And we'd spend a lot of time gardening, canning and gossiping about farming and communal living and making cheese from fresh milk. Oh, and some time on the beach!

somewhere I saw a "lemon drop" cookie that was pretty well snickerdoodles, with about a teaspoon of grated lemon zest added and then rolled in crushed lemon candy instead of the cinnamon sugar of snickerdoodles. Seems to me it was a Martha Stewart recipe.

Those cookies do look good and I agree that it is the little lemon shaped candy - I think they used to be sold in bulk at the Penny Candy section. Please let us know how they turn out.

And Linda, are you thinking of Lori's Lemon Coolers? I haven't made these in a while, but all this lemon talk has me craving them. These are excellent!

Lori's Lemon Coolers
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon water

1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon unsweetened lemonade mix

Directions:

-Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
-Cream together sugars, shortening, egg, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl.
-Add the flour and baking powder. Add 1 tablespoon of water and continue mixing until dough forms a ball.
-Roll dough into 3/4-inch balls and flatten slightly onto a lightly greased cookie sheet.
-Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until cookies are light brown.
-As cookies bake, combine 1 cup powdered sugar with the lemonade drink mix in a large plastic bag and shake thoroughly to mix.
-When the cookies are removed from the oven and while they are still hot, add four or five at a time to the bag and mix until the cookies are well coated. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
(Makes about 4 dozen cookies)

NOTES:
*This recipe doubles easily
*I use Crystal Lite Lemonade Mix.

Pretty well the same recipe....but use crushed lemon candy rather than lemonade mix.

I just saw (and bought) a bag of Lemon Drops at Publix. Farley's Candy makes the ones I picked up.

I may try the cookies this weekend.

If the regular lemon drops weren't strong enough I'd see if you can pick up a little bag of lemon heads. Those are quite strong and puckery. I thought originally when I saw this recipe that that's what they meant. Perhaps they meant the more generic drops but the lemon heads come in the size bag they mentioned, I do believe and like I said, they're quite strong.

Yes those lemon drops candy are hard and have a mild lemon taste to me. There's the sour lemon balls that are a soft, chewy type of candy that are very sour if that is of interest to you. They have more lemon flavor in them too. I think I'd try them. I never liked the hard candies broken up in cookies. They get lodged in my teeth and are annoying so they don't really add to the flavor IMO.

I had a couple pretty good lemon cookie recipes. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find them.

How about this one? It uses the Lemonhead candies (soft ones) instead of the hard Lemon Drops.

Hm.. lemonheads are hard, not soft.. at least where we get them. And in that recipe it says to crush them, and in the picture of the bare nekkid cookie you can see pieces of the hard candy. But they do sound good.

I made the recipe that sapphires posted, using the hard lemon drops. good cookie, better completely cooled.

BUT!!!! Be sure to cook them on a silpat, because they stick to a greased cookie sheet.

LOL @ Coconut - I guess it's the high humidity here in FL that makes them soft? I haven't eaten them in years!
