miele w4842 owners..do not set hygiene info to off

So with all my playing around yesterday in the Programming mode with my new W4842, without realzing it...I set Hygiene Info to OFF.

Today, I wanted to run a Clean Machine cycle. I put bleach in the dispenser, and scrolled thru the MasterCare Cycles...and Clean Machine was not there! Just gone! But, there was an Express Cycle listed in MasterCare. Us W4842 owners know this should not be there, since the 4842 now has a hard button for Express, on the main control panel (W4840 has Express in the MasterCare options).

When I tried the Express button on the main control panel...it was VERY odd & wrong. Temperature options were No Heat and Cold. Spin was stuck on Slow! In the MasterCare Options, the Express Cycle let me select Warm water and different spin speeds. What happened to my Clean Machine cycle, that I love?? Why is my Express button not letting me select options??

On the phone with Miele for 30+ mins..... Finally hung up, and went on a search mission myself. Entered Programming mode again, and saw that Hygiene Info was set to OFF. Set it to ON, and voila...Clean Machine Cycle is now once again offered in MasterCare, and my Express button on the main control panel now lets me select water temps and spin speeds!

I think this is a lesson, and why Miele does not include instructions on how to enter Programming and Service modes! BE CAREFUL what you turn ON and OFF in Programming mode. It can have real implications!!!

Hygiene was OFF by default on my W4842 and I don't experience the issues you describe. I would check to make sure your Country Version is set to US and that you haven't changed anything else on the machine. I can turn Hygiene Info on and off without any ill effects or cycle changes elsewhere. It is simply a function to alert you after a certain number of washes done below a certain temperature as a reminder to you to clean the machine.

I think I kept mine turned off. I also noticed that if you turn off Bleach in the programming menu, your cycle times are cut by 10 minutes across the board. Watch out for that too!

Once I returned my setting to Hygiene Info ON, my washer acted the way it did from day one! I wonder if my Software version is different from your version? Maybe Miele did this, to encourage owners to have the Hygiene Info displayed? Don't know, but all I know is that once I returned the Hygiene Info to ON, the machine was fine & I ran a Clean Machine cycle. Perfect!

I set the machine to Suds Cooling ON. That seemed like a good idea. Do you have your machine set to Suds Cooling ON? Alex (whirpool trainee)...is it good to have this Cooling feature set to ON?

@livebetter - I have noticed that my detergent drawer is sometimes slightly open by the end of a wash cycle. It's pushed out slightly less than 1/4 inch (5cm) and it generally happens with a HOT wash, but it does not happen every time. I probably need to call and have this checked. - - - As for the water running out (re: OP), eh, it's a design flaw, end of story. It happens. I once had a first generation Volvo XC70 wagon that had terrible design flaw with it's roof rack; completely useless accessory, but I digress. When it rained heavily and the door or window opened, rain poured right in. Discovered it at a McDonald's drive-in during a downpour. Just by looking at it, I could see where the design flaw existed. Dealer replaced the roof rack to the Euro style and it never happened again. The replacement rack was also utilitarian, which was nice.

Larsi, today we went to set up return for Electrolux washer that was having problems. The guy at appliance who sold it to us said that we needed to call Electrolux, tell them the prob and ask for a R.C.M number, then call him with it and he will order me another one, so that they can get refunded from Electrolux. Electrolux wanted to send out a service repair. I told them that i didn't trust this machine due to the rubbing and had called the authorized repair man, told him the prob and he said he would ask for a new one, as this could be seal or tub or both. He said he wouldnt keep one that was bad from day one. So after Electrolux figured out i wasnt going the repair route, they told me to call the store and tell them they had a seven day return policy. Told her it was delevered last thurs.and that store was passing buck to them. Electrolux got the store on the phone, told them i said no repair and then electrolux said the 7 day return policy for a electrolux did not start until unit was delivered, not from purchase date! Store said it would get with their RCM people and that electrolux may give them some credit for it. I am not sure they will get full credit. Anyway, i should hear from store tomorrow to tell me that they have ordered me another set as the dryer was dammaged and they did not check it over before delivery. I don't think that it was my place to have to do all the leg work. It should have been store, but salseman said if i called that it would carry more weight. I think that he knew that i would be told to have it repaired and he just didn't want to tell us that. I will rest easier when they call tomorrow with a time line of when new set is in. They will reverse the dryer door as they didn't do it with this one even though i asked for it, but my DH was going to do it anyway. Fingers crossed i get a good set, no scratches, dents, or detergent tray that does not hang on the front corner which this one does. THEN, i will be in laundry heaven!!!!

It's all relative, isn't it? Larsi, you illuminated the Electrolux for a lot of people who knew very little about the machine. Indeed, most of us probably thought the big selling point of the Electrolux was the slow wash times when in reality it has all the flexibility anyone could need. I think that's great. This forum is so much more helpful than any other web site or magazine with "reviews". Today most "reviews" are simply a regurgitation of the manufacturer's marketing baloney and very little, if any, hands-on usage. I happen to like the Miele party right now - the food tastes good, the music is classical, the host is attentive, and I'm having a good time. The Electrolux party down the hall looks like fun, too - a younger, cooler bunch that bring their own booze and dance the night away. Okay that sounds silly, but both parties are fun! :)

Thank you everyone for the input and the links! I wish they had a proper review of the Miele on that washerdryerinfo. The lower model Asko 6424 machine does not have an induction motor like their higher models do. Since the brushes wore out on my current Bosch after only 6 years (perhaps that is normal, I do a lot of loads) I definitely don't want a motor with brushes again. Especially when there are machines available now with brushless motors (I believe the current Bosch has induction motor now). Also very little in the way of a display/readout on the Asko lower model. @sshrivastava: Yes, I take your point about the 220V and Asko. I currently have the 220V Bosch. Asko swears blind that you absolutely have to plug their machine into their dryer and that the required receptacle is not available here. But I just noted that my Bosch said the same thing and yet we found one. The Asko looks to me like it might require a NEMA 6-20R, but I am not an electrician. I saw Asko and was actually very underwhelmed: expected to like it a lot more. There are several reasons for me ruling out Asko: Only the higher model 6884ECO has a brushless motor and this has a second outside door that apparently MUST be closed in order for the machine to work. I saw one in a store and that door would drive me crazy. I also was not very impressed with the swing-out detergent "drawer" they have - seemed flimsy and was not aligned very well. I also do not like the black seal they have on the door instead of a normal boot. Seems to me the boots have stood the test of time design wise and that seal looked like it could easily wear. Read somewhere here too that it made a black mark on some laundry. Did not notice the door hinge but another store mentioned it is a piano style hinge and not well designed. But, bottom line is, I was just not impressed with the OUTSIDE design and build quality. But, they would be great if you wanted them in a kitchen or show laundry room as they would blend in very nicely. The 6884ECO retails for around the price of the Miele W3033 anyway so no great incentive there. Interestingly I note that Asko is now pushing having the washer hooked up to BOTH hot and cold....their W6884ECO is the current better model and that they want you to hook to both supplies. Not sure how you could then get the profile wash that is the benefit of the 220V heater. Bosch and Asko BOTH have PLASTIC fins on the inside of the washtub. My current Bosch has stainless that appear to be molded from one piece of steel so that there is no seam. I think the Miele is like that too, but at least they are stainless. No way do I want to go to plastic fins in the tub. So pretty much all my criteria bring me back to Miele as the only option I guess... I am continuing to forge on with my current machine until it absolutely will not go. Most washes complete. I cannot run the stand alone spin and drain programs, but don't often use those in any case. I can also force it to drain using the service mode, now I know how to do that. I do need to open the door mid wash sometime to make sure the heater is still working. Once thefrequency of aborted wash cycles increases I shall probably order the Miele.

Suds Cooling ON only applies for water that is heated above 160F. Since the maximum temperature of the W4842 never gets that high, the feature doesn't seem to apply. I hesitate to turn on anything that wasn't turned on at the factory with the exception of Maximum Water Level, which is advisable for people with soft water. Also, make sure you have Water+/Extra Rinse turned on, not just Water+. If you don't have both turned on, you will lose the 2nd rinse. I read elsewhere that you only turned on Water+. Water+/Extra Rinse is on by default.

You can check your firmware version by holding START, closing the door and pressing START 3 times then holding on the third press. The first option will give you what I presume are your software versions. Mine is ELP:1827 and EW:1828.

Also make sure Fascia Type is set to "Express", as this determines how your Express wash button functions depending on how the button is labeled on the panel. Also I have both ON and OFF options under Automatic Load Control, not OFF and OFF as others are saying. One of us must have newer firmware.

Hi Lars, Sshrivastava is right, the cooldown option in the normal cycle applies since 75Â°C. It makes sense to prevent scalding hazards in case the machine drains into a laundry tub, but it also has a anticrease action (similar to the cooldown before the main wash drain in the wrinkle free cycle).
My old sensor-electronic is not so clever and does it by default, no matter the temp selector is set on tap cold. The "young" novotronic has the same programmable option as your machine. I have it set ON and it works just on cottons 75Â°C and cottons 95Â°C

Sshriva, i guess those extra 10 minutes added by the bleach option are a further extra rinse

WOW...our W4842 machines are SO different. For starters, the Water+ option was OFF when delivered. According to the Miele Master Tech who changed some programs on my W4842 and T9802 dryers, Water+ is NOT on by default. It must be selected either by a Miele Tech, or owners who are capable and willing to enter Programming mode themselves.

Also, I ONLY have my W4842 set to Water+ and I get TWO rinses with every cycle (3 if I select Sensitive). So on my W4842, I do not need to select anything relating to Extra Rinse). Water+ gives me VERY high water levels for rinsing, and it's TWO rinses automatically!

I turned the Suds Cooling off, since like you said...it did not come delivered activated, and the W4842 does not heat the water high enough, to warrant the Suds Cooling feature!
