Where/how did you celebrate your 50th B-day?

Or some other "round" number?

I dunno why, but I'm having trouble figuring out where I want to be, with whom, doing what!

I've chosen 1 special trip to do something fun, but that won't be on my birthday-- it'll be a few months before.

I guess there's a part of me that doesn't want to confront "that" number because I don't "feel" that number!

I hit 50 17 years ago & to me the number is just that a number. For some reason 50, 60, 65 was just a day that my family was together to say I love you. Never take any day for granted, enjoy what you have. In today's world would you want to be 20 again, I would not. Hope you find something or someone to make you feel better. They always say "You are as old as you feel" so be 20 if you want to.

My 50th, 60th, 70th just came and went, nothing to remember.

My hardest ever birthday was my 65 as I realized I was an elder.

72 was a great one as gs and I spent the day together and we so enjoyed eachother.

gellchom - Thanks for the reply. The indoor party was borne of so many years of late summer parties that have been much too hot for the comfort of guests who are a bit older. I love to cook and will probably do some of my best appetizer recipes with additions by professional catering. I guess I am most interested in what would have been served back in 1958 as a place to start. If I don't get much in that regard, I will proceed with my own recipes. Unfortunately, I am a control freak about food and usually give the caterer recipes I want done, but don't have time to do myself. I always enlist help with serving, re-filling bowls, freshening drinks, etc when I host parties. I want the party to have a casual elegance. I like the catering/service people to be a bit "invisible". Even my annual 4th of July party is so much easier with a couple of extra hands. I think it is money well spent as it takes alot of the stress away and enables me to mingle and enjoy the party so to say. I am definitely utilizing help in that regard. I am looking for some unusual or time-reflective recipes that were served in 1958. My parents had a modest wedding by today's standards. Their receiption has been described as something like a beef and beer to me. LOL While they had a modest wedding, they had attendants, etc. The receptions back in the day seem to have been less elaborate than those of in the past couple of generations. The lollipop lamb chops are a great idea as they really can be handled as an appetizer. Besides my dad loves lamb. I love your ideas. I am going to look into some music options. I am a bit limited space-wise for a quartet, so a single flute player would be lovely in the background. I had planned using fresh flowers for decorating and for my parents. I did a 25th and 40th anniversary party for them, dry runs for the 50th! Sangria is a great idea. I have many summer and winter sangria recipes, so I will dig those out. I am thinking a champagne toast before I serve cake. I am a bit stuck as to the signature drink. Don't want something martini-like as a majority of my parents friends take medicines for cholesterol and the like, so I am not sure how well hard alcohol mixes with different meds. I also worry about guests driving. With lite fare, appetizers and desserts, I don't think strong drinks would be a good idea. I was thinking maybe weak whiskey sours? The invite including a request for a memory or anecdote is another great idea. I planned on copying my parents' wedding album photos for display on the buffet and throughout the rooms in my home where the party will take place. Perhaps I can go through all my photos and incorporate them into the album and insert the contributions of the guests. I gave DH a surprise 40th b-day dinner party years ago, and the pics I had copied and enlarged for display were a huge hit. They were displayed in a subtle fashion - on the buffet, in the enclosed porch where the bar was set up, you get the idea. DH b-day party was an intimate dinner party with 10 couples and about 15 family members. DH hates attention so the surprise dinner party was just perfect and was hosted at the home of our closest friends. The party atmosphere was understated and lovely. It was more about great food (we all belong to a gourmet club so we served my husband's favorite meal). I didn't want to go over the top with peripheral decorating as my friends' home is beautifully decorated. I spent a majority of my budget on great food. I guess that is the "feel" I am going for with this party as well. A special album for keepsake would be wonderful. I will have to enlist the services of my SIL who is a big scrap-booker. She, I'm sure will have some ideas! I will also need to chose a unusual invitation. Once again, thanks for getting my brain functioning. I know it is a year away, but I like to have things planned to the T. A total list maker am I! Thank you again.

I'll be 50 next year, and I may very well have a party. Why not? If you are worrying that people will think you are fishing for gifts, I think that it is all in HOW you do it, not WHETHER. Obviously, you do NOT include any hints or worst of all wish or registry lists. You could write "no gifts please," because although etiquette forbids it (because ANY mention of gifts is forbidden), it certainly isn't greedy or pushy. But as one poster pointed out, many people will buy gifts anyway. I wouldn't assume it's because they are thinking "Oh, yeah, right, I know I AM expected to buy a gift anyway." I think they WANT to buy you a gift. After all, it's your 50th birthday -- party or not, I bet most of your good friends would like to buy you a gift. Your guest list is the key, in my opinion. Invite people who know you well enough to know you are giving a party to celebrate, not as a fund-raiser for yourself. For my 40th birthday, I had a semi-surprise party: I knew there would be a party, and when, but my husband and friend made all the plans. (It was really fun -- a sort of a treasure hunt all around town, with the clues being questions from my favorite word game that the teams of four had to solve, then either get the artifact suggested by the answer or do the activity it named -- which sometimes required getting strangers involved, to form a square dance, for example -- which they had to prove with a Polaroid picture. Afterward was supper, comparing the results of the hunt, and giving out prizes.) They didn't put "no gifts" on the invitation, and people did bring gifts (or gave them to me another time). But I don't think it was a problem -- anyway, I hope not (how would I know? People are too polite to tell you something like that! But I have been to others' birthday parties and haven't heard anyone complain about this). Most of the guests were people who would've given me a 40th birthday gift anyway, and the gifts weren't big -- perhaps a picture frame, CD, or a book, or a donation to charity. That's pretty much what you'd spend on a hostess gift if you were invited to dinner for a non-birthday party, isn't it? The point is, I think people worry too much about this. If they want to give you a gift, they will no matter what you do. It's not terrible to give a gift -- it's fun! If I have a party next year, I probably will handle this by not mentioning "birthday" (or "anniversary" -- our 25th is the same month as my 50th birthday) on the invitation. Just "please come to a party."

Thank you for the wonderful suggestions! Thank you for the link Deborah. I completely forgot about putting in the bottom. I am feverishly taking notes as I read. I've got flowers, balloons, photo board, slideshow, dj, photographer, videographer lined up already. We too are having the party in a private room at a restaurant. I didn't think about non-alcoholic bubbly, so thank you for that suggestion. I love the memory jar or the asking for memories ahead of time. It might be fun to even have some people lined up to present their memories out loud. We've got some very funny people in the group! Lydia! Ever since I have known my FIL, he has been a chocoholic. He LOOOVES Hersheys and has been know to eat one of those giant bars by himself (and still manage to stay fit, LoL!) I looked into the minis and I think we will order those. How many do you think we need for 80 people? The nice thing about those attending is that there is not one person that hasn't been in our (their) circle of friends for less than 20 years. Practically every one of them attended our wedding, so I am almost positive there will not be any awkward moments. In fact, there will be a lot of catching-up among the guests who haven't seen each other while we wait for my inlaws to arrive. I don't think I will need assigned seating, but will just reserve a few tables for immediate family. I also will just the arrival time on the invites and have my inlaws get there about 20 minutes later. I am on the fence about party favors. We'd rather put the money toward good food, drink, and entertainment. I will check out the invitation websites listed. I've decided that making my invitations won't save that much because I don't have the computer program. I'd have to buy that plus the paper and envelopes, PLUS take the time to learn it, design it, etc. For about $100, it is worth getting them made, I think. A little about me: Former prop. mgmt assistant, turned teacher, turned SAH mom, turned homeschooler, turned remodel addict, turned part-time volunteer teacher again, all the while working as fitness instructor and now personal trainer and care-giver to my aging mother! Somehow, I still manage to maintain my sanity, LOL! I am so excited about this party! I will you all know how it goes. But before that, I am sure I will be back with more questions. :-D

I was in Paris when I turned 50. It was my last day of a three week stay. I flew out that afternoon to London for another week of fun.

I was really worried how I would handle my 50th but between my best friend, her DD and my DD, they were able to keep my mind off of my milestone birthday in two countries.

I was first with neighbors, they were giving me a farewell luncheon while the movers were loading up the van. Then I was with a very close friend who was having a birthday dinner for me.

I don't remember how I celerbarated my 50th birthday 19 yr's ago. Think my saddest birthday was turning 30 as I thought that was old.

Pammyfay and kathsgardn... I have my 50th coming up this summer. I'm dreading it too. I can remember being a teenager and my mom celebrating her 50th and I was thinking, Holy Cow, Mom is old!! and here I am sneaking up to that same number. I don't have anything planned so far.

Friends threw a surprise party for my 50th. My dad had just died (at age 90), so I wasn't expecting anyone to make a fuss over my birthday. But it was a lovely surprise.

Another friend gave me a party for my 60th, complete with jazz musicians and a great singer who gave me the best rendition of "Happy Birthday" I've ever heard. :-)

I agree with Mary, though . . . these are just numbers. Every year is a gift. I'm certain of this because my mother died just a couple of weeks after her 38th birthday. I hope I'll be able to still blithely say "just numbers" when I turn 70. :-)

For my 50th I took 2 of my best girlfriends to a historic area in a nearby town and we bar hopped for several hours then stayed in a little bed and breakfast on the same street. Got up the next day and did some shopping before heading home. I wouldn't go through a milestone birthday without planning something.

I went to Ashville, NC and stayed at the hotel on the grounds of the Biltmore for a long weekend. It was wonderful. We returned home early on a Sunday and DH had planned a surprise all day birthday party and invited my best friends from around the country. It was all quite special and memorable.

Then DH told me the country club was having an after golf to-do that day, and since it was my 50th Birthday and instead of going out to dinner, why not go?
We went over, into the Ballroom, and all our friends and family were there ! There was a buffet and a DJ for dancing - and I was stunned. About 100 people !

Funny you mention this, because DH has passed on, we don't belong to the country club (Tom doesn't play golf), but his street rod club is having a dinner there next month. Rarely go there, but the memory of my Birthday party always comes to mind when I do.

For my 30th I got an orange Corvette. For my 40th I went to Antigua and celebrated the day with a tropical drink on the beach.

I don't remember my 50th or 60th! 65 is coming up in the spring. I should make some sort of plans.

50 is easy! Somehow when you turn 50 you start to give yourself permission to do all those things you've been waiting to do.

I spent my 50th in a heart clinic..not the best way to spend that day for sure-however,I can now say,a "few" years later,being in the 50's isnt bad at all!! I never feel this age(except when I do not feel well)
For that matter,I think I love being over 50!

At that time I was doing daycare and all the families had a surprise party for me.. Two other friends brought me cakes... Fun day..

I turn 50 this year too - 1962 was a good year! I have always wanted a hot air balloon ride so had been thinking that's what we would be doing on or around 12th October. But I've changed my mind after a tragic accident happened here in NZ just a couple of weeks ago
On 7th January a balloon came down in a fire ball and all 11 on board were killed. All but two were severly burnt (the other two jumped) and it was just so so sad as many on board were celebrating "special" occassions or the ride was a Xmas gift from family members.
So I'll be having a re-think because I'd really like to mark the occassion with something a bit more than a dinner or party.

I don't know. That date is too far back in ancient history for me to remember. I think the wife baked a cake for me. She said she made it big enough to hold all the candles!

I don't remember, probably had my own birthday family dinner. I really don't remember too many birthdays, maybe just a couple of them and they were a very long time ago.

This is really bad as mine was only 2.5 years ago, but I don't remember!! It is only a number to me. I had felt really good about myself, thinking I didn't look 50 at all until I started messing around with the camera on my new I-phone. I never thought I had wrinkly neck skin because it always looks firm in the mirror. Well, it's not!! That was a rude awakening, but still not ready for a visit to the plastic surgeon. And I'm not kidding about that.

My friends and family organized a surprise party for my 50th and they pulled it off. I had no idea. We had so much fun and so many great things to eat.

Mine was two years ago, we had a huge party and family reunion. One granddaughter was turning two, one goddaughter was turning four and one was turning twenty one. We combined them all together and had a wonderful weekend!

At the time it was miserable but now looking back it was interesting and character building. I was working two, nearly full-time jobs. Took a second job so that I could pay my staff, the plight of the small business owner caught in the fall out of 9/11.

I had a T shirt made that said "This Is What 50 Looks Like". And DH got me a bracelet with diamonds & rubies (my birthstone). But since I picked out the bracelet, it wasn't a surprise :(

Beyond that, I don't remember anything special. Just like I don't remember anything special when I turned 60 a couple of years ago!

Our friends had a party for me at their house. Owen asked me for a list of people to invite, he sent out the invitations. He and Woody went shopping for all the supplies. I made a few side dishes and brought the drinks. We grilled burgers, drank margaritas, dabbled in their pool, and just visited with friends all day. It was great fun and I didn't have to clean my house, which was too small for that party anyway. I thought it was a great thing for him to do for me.

And it didn't bother me for a single second to turn 50. I look at every birthday as something wonderful. It's so much better than NOT having another birthday. I'll be 55 pretty soon.

Wow! There are quite a few of us turning the big 50 this year. Mine's in April and I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish for a trip to a beach with my dh, kids and granddaughter. I made dh promise on the family Bible that he wouldn't throw a party. For one, I don't enjoy being center of attention and second, I'd rather take that money and put it toward some debt we incurred while he was unemployed.
We will take a long weekend road trip somewhere...not sure where yet.
I agree with you Flamingo - getting a year old is much better than the alternative! :) Happy 50th to my fellow 1962'ers!

I turned 50 last August. We were on vacation in Florida, but had to be back by my B-day, because that was the day of our family reunion. So I parasailed for my birthday in Florida and spent the actual day with tons of family and friends and my son flew in from Chicago and my daughter was home too. Very best birthday ever.

I have no problem with getting older, as has been said, it's a lot better than the alternative. And the more birthdays you have, the longer you live! So I love birthdays :-)
I turned 50 last year. I think round number birthdays are a milestone to celebrate a bit more. And half a century is pretty cool :-) DH organised to hire a big, fully staffed house on Bali (which is relatively inexpensive) and we invited all the family and partners to come and spend the week with us. We had a ball :-)

Turning 50 is memorable for others.....not me! I was and am surprised when each of my children hit that milestone and there is one more to go. Mine, tho, I have no idea what I did or thought about then.

Years and years ago, I heard Carol Channing say that she did not know how old she was since she was a Christian Scientist and I thought THAT was such a good idea (not knowing how old one is) and sort of adopted that theory... it worked for awhile, but lately my DH keeps reminding me that I am 77 and I just don't know where those years went!

On my 50th my daughter Carri had a surprise birthday for me. I thought we were going out to eat. We had to stop at their house to get them....the lights were dim...I didn't have a clue.

My oldest daughter and her four little ones (at the time) had come home from Minn. Carri had them hid there at her house for two days...

When I walked into the dinning room they turned on the light and my grandbabies all came running to hug me and wish me Happy Birthday...of course I started crying.

I don't remember what we did after that...if we had cake or supper or anything... Just remember being surprised by those little ones I was missing. Was a great birthday. The one that was just a baby is now 16....WOW I'm getting old...I'm about to celebrate another one.

I just turned 50 in September. My coworkers gave me a gift card and surprised my by decorating my car with balloons. Because of our work schedules I had to wait for my b-day present from DH. I told him I wanted "3 G's"...

The so called milestone birthdays have never mattered to me.

The only birthday I remember feeling old (and sad) was my 20th. My friends had been quite a bit older than me. Leaving my teens make me feel like I wouldn't be the "baby" any more.

I remember I was sitting in a diner feeling rather sorry for myself. LOL A couple of my guy friends came along, bought a couple of drinks and we decided to go to San Francisco.

My DS who is much more like me than he cares to admit went through his mid life crisis at the ripe old age of 26. He wrote a blog on how he lost his "crazy" (my words) felt too complacent,been there-done that and feared he wouldn't get it back.

I went to Outback restaurant with my family. I looked away and they all pulled Post-it notes out and stuck them on their shirts. For example, my niece had one that said My Aunt is 50!
My Sis had one My Sister is 50! I laughed and laughed. It was a good time.
