Kool-Aid Pickles: Oh, Yeah! (pics)

So, I was wandering around the internets last week looking for information on calcium chloride, when I came across a recipe for Kool-Aid Pickles.

Abomination? Food science geekery? Pure genius? Ya'll know me...if it's weird, I've got to try it! (hee-hee)

Apparently, they are a deep, deep, Southern delicacy. I'm talking Mississippi Delta here people! They're a bit like the concept for fried green tomatoes or boiled peanuts: you either love them or are disgusted immediately.

From what I've read, kids looooove them, and I must admit they are addicting. They're messy (think red Kool-Aid on white carpet) and taste a lot like cherry flavored bread-and-butter pickles. Wouldn't these be great to serve at a Halloween party?

One of the rare times I will actually purchase a jar of pickles from the store (just in case this was a flop...can't waste good, homemade pickles!)...

Kool-Aid Pickles

1, 46-oz. jar of Kosher pickles (whole)

*2 small packs of Kool-Aid powder

2 cups warm water

1 cup sugar

Open the pickle jar and dump the brine. Remove pickles and slice each pickle in half lengthwise. Pack pickles back in jar. Mix warm water, Kool-Aid, and sugar together; stir until the sugar is dissolved. Pour Kool-Aid mixture over pickles. Cap the pickle jar and place in the refrigerator for 24 hours. For more flavor, leave pickles in brine for several days.

*Note: I used Cherry flavored Kool-Aid, as that seemed to be the most highly rated flavor, but feel free to experiment with other flavors. I've heard lemon-lime is also good, but grape is yuck!

Webkat,we are rural here too about 33 miles from the Spokane city line. On dial up we could only connect at 28.8 with a 56k modem...slower than all get-out. We had cable at one time, but even their cable kept getting blown down from the pole. Since their company is located in Idaho it a pain in the you know what to get them up here in reasonable time. Sprint service is the ONLY cell company that gets good service up here; never had a dropped signal. Funny Verizon is our main landline company yet forget about cell service!! Go figure. After the curds, I was expecting some whey - I thought it was a Miss Muffet theme. Love Cutco knives. I have a couple of them that my sister gave me one year, and I ended up using them a lot more than I had expected. You should get lots of use out of it! Here's the recipe: 1 (46-ounce) jar whole dill pickles 1 cup sugar 2 cups water 2 packets red Kool-Aid (such as cherry flavored) How to make it -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drain and discard the juice from the pickle jar. Just wanted to stop in and say this seems to be the norm as opposed to the exception - at least in our experience. We're still framing but the framers have - on their own - moved things around slightly even at this stage. For example, all of our windows and doors on the front of the house have matching header heights to create an even sightline across the front elevation. We have some really tall windows on the front though, so the framers decided to mess with the header heights a bit to keep the bottom of the windows from being "too close to the floor" in their estimation. They are now correcting them. It's bizarre to me that tradesmen would do this rather than just pick up the phone and ask. "This window is really tall and is going to be 6" from the floor - are you okay with that?" Yes, that's why the plans specified that header height. Nearly *all* of our current issues could have been avoided by simple communication. It's not just a problem in construction though. At my job I lead a team that is tasked with improving communication throughout the company. We represent all departments and hitch our horses to various issues that previously seemed to "wilt on the vine" before completion - we pick up where others left off and drag them to the finish line. It's amazing what some simple, clear communication can accomplish.

Hey, Kathy, it's good to see you again! I found that recipe a couple of years ago, I think Dylan is going to make a batch for the fair this year. He won a blue ribbon with that root beer jelly a few years back and so he's always on the look out for something new and different.

Oh Thank you! I am going to try them. I need something that doesn't stain, so I'll try the lemon-lime. I am always on the look out for 'different' to serve for Friday nite races -
everything tastes better eaten under the stars, on a sailboat, after drinking huge amounts of ice cold beer! We do pickles, and poppers and peppers - some not so good~LOL

I have never- ever bought Kool-Aid. Where the heck is it in the grocery store? heehee.

I wish I had this made for tonite! Now I have to plan next week's meal around this delicacy.

LOL, Mags, in my grocery store it's right next the the candy. Figures, huh? Well, it is the same aisle as the juice, gatorade, etc...

It might pair well with SPAM -- something acidic to cut the grease as well as sugar for extra decadence. Not to mention attractive color choices. Think about it.

Hey, this is starting to sound better than a can of Hormel chili dumped in a bag of Fritos.

Must be just me, but why would anyone want to add Kool-aid to a jar of perfectly good dill pickles? I don't get it. What am I missing?

Ann, I think this recipe is actually for those of us who don't really like dill pickles.

I like sweet pickles and I think this would make a dill pickle pretty sweet. Not that I'd want to eat it anyway, but it would sure make something interesting for a fair entry that probably no one else would enter.

Surprisingly, they aren't too sweet at all...more sweet-and-sour. The more they sit in the brine, the more Kool-Aid they absorb. I think they're at their best between 24-48 hours.

To me, it's really not that different of a concept than the famous Red Hots Cinnamon Pickles. They're really fun and amazingly tasty. They turn a sour pickle into a bread-and-butter with flavor.

Try it, you know you want to! (hee-hee)

Since I'm drinking a glass of cherry kool-aid right now, it's kinda hard to imagine a dill pickle in it! Especially since 2 packs in 2 cups of water is like quadrupple the strength. For drinking I double the strength and use splenda - it's a good way off of colas. I wonder if you could use the spenda instead of sugar for the pickles too??

I've had Koolaid pickles before.

Well, say what you want, I intend to try them. Since I'd pretty much barf if I ate a dill pickle anyway, and that goes double for the deep fried ones, I might actually like these.

After all, I made gummy "candy" for the kids out of Kool aid and zucchini last year, put into the dehydrator and they loved the stuff, so this might be an interesting addition to my canning!

This is the kind of thing I'd definitely taste if someone handed me one but I don't want to make a whole jar of 'em. I think I'd like them but I'm not sure how many I could eat!

Somebody did that to a jar of my dills and that would be the last pickle of mine they ever saw !

Now there are a couple of commercial brands that I think could only be improved with a touch of kool-aid!

Serena, I got the recipe from Linda Lou at Harvest and the grandkids just loved it. I used cherry koolaid, and then I ran out of zucchini. THis year I intend to try the pineapple juice version, it's gotta be healthier a little, although it has the same amount of sugar.

Zucchini Candy
10 cups peeled diced zucchini 1/2 inch cubes ( I use "worms" about 3 inches long and 1/12 inch thick and wide. The little dice would be good in muffins, though.
3 cups water
2 pkgs. unsweetened Koolaid
2 1/2 cups sugar
Peel zucchini, dice or slice, removing seeds. Mix the liquid syrup together. Add zucchini. Bring to a boil and them simmer for 25 min. Drain. Put on dehydrator trays. Dry 14 hours at 125 degrees. Turn pieces over and dry another 4 hours. This will feel dry and not sticky when done. Store in jars or other tightly sealed containers.If you dip in sugar when you turn them, they will be more like "gum drops" on the outside.
You can do the same thing with the zucchini but use 48 oz. pineapple juice, 2 T. pineapple extract, 2 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice.

Around here, all the raspa (snowcones) stands sell a raspa called picadilly. it's a cup of shaved ice with diced pickles and package of grape unsweetened kool-aide. Some add the Lucas chile powder. yuk!

Well, I am with Annie in that I do not like dill pickles and only like sweet ones or bread and butter,...but, there is no way I could eat one of those Kathy! They certainly look pretty, but that does not tempt me at all. OK Annie. You are adventurous. You try them and let us know what you thought.
