Do any of you have a spayed dog that seemingly has a cycle?

I posted this on the Pet Forum but got no responses. My daughter adopted two rescue dogs a few years ago. The male was neutered and the female was spayed before she got them. For almost a year, the 3 year old female has had a faded rust color discharge. If she's lying on the sofa or her dog pillow, we often find a discoloration when she gets up.
The 'leaks' only cover an area about the size of 2 quarters, but they do have an unpleasant odor. For hygenic reasons we always wipe off any spots immediately. However, during the course of the night, she leaves several spots on her dog pillowcase, so it must be washed at least every other day. The male dog is always sniffing her and sometimes tries to hump her, although we know nothing can happen because they are both fixed.

My daughter has taken her dog to two Vets, and neither gave any diagnosis (or seemed concerned) about the discharge, as all bloodwork and exams came back perfectly normal. (The dog seems perfectly healthy, other than having the discharge.) Do any of you have a young female dog that has similar discharge to an unspayed dog? What did your Vet say about it? Thank you kindly for your help.

Could it have something to do with her anal glands? infection maybe?

I've had four female dogs all of whom were spayed. Never had this problem. It may be abnormally normal if that makes any sense. By that I mean it make occur in rare cases but is not exactly abnormal. However, I think I would seek a third Vet. Even if it's not a problem, I want the doctor to tell me it happens in some instances and it's nothing to be concerned about. I like it put in actual words rather than it just being passed off.

My boy was neutered when he was over one year old. That was his age when I rescued him from a shelter. He was fully intact with huge you know whats. We went to look at a St. Bernard Mix puppy.NOT! This dog was black and white, not a puppy at all and not a St. Bernard anywhere in his background. I turned around to leave to leave, because I knew the rescue I was fostering for would probably not ok him. Other dogs in the kennel started growling, barking and acting like they were going to attack him while he just layed there giving them a bored look. My husband freaked and said "We gotta get him outa there, NOW!" Long story short, he was out and in the truck within 15 minutes. He was never a foster and was our own dog from the start. He had to be neutered within 30 days. (ridiculous) he never should have been allowed to leave with us until he was. Anyway, of course he was neutered within a few days. It went well, I guess. However his recovery time and the discomfort he seemed to be in was much greater than puppies and kittens I've had done at a much earlier age. Puppies and kittens are hard to keep quiet next day after surgery.They don't even seem to know they had a surgery. As far as any problems caused by early S/N I've yet to any proof. I owned a female dog seven years old that had never been spayded. Why did I wait so long? well, she was a purebred and i had this "fantasy" that I might breed her and sell the puppies. One night,when she was in heat, I was walking her on a leash and she got loose. I ran all over the neighborhood, flagging down cars. "Did you see a little white dog...?" I finally found her about a mile away. I knew she ran because she was seeking sex. That taught me, no matter how careful the owner is, a pet can have difficulty resisting the call of nature. I got her spayed shortly after that experience, and never had any more problems with her running away. She had a long healthy life. I know from experience with many pet, dogs and cats of both sexes, that you have to be extremely watchful ,even of "indoor" pets. Anything can happen in the blink of an eye.

My first cat went to a fancy cat hospital right outside of DC to get spayed about 3 years ago. Even with a reduced fee spay certificate from the local SPCA it cost a lot more then 500.00. If you really like your vet then maybe it's worth it for you, but I would check around. 2 hours away from DC near where my sister lives (now I live there too!) it costs around 100.00 for a spay, so if you have family decently near I'd check around them as well. Good luck finding a place both you and your fur-baby love! :-)

we adopted two puppies back in July. One came from a litter that had been found in a dumpster, the other from an unwanted pregnancy where the litter was left with a friend! The younger dog is now nearly 6 months old and we thought it was a lab. Well she is now all of 28lbs so she is mixed with something a little smaller than a lab! Her name is Scout and she is very sweet. Emma is about three weeks older than Scout, and is, we think lab, boxer, pointer and is now 44lbs. They have been together since we had them. We managed to scrape the money together to get them spade last week (my husband had been laid off and so we are both now looking for work). Since the operation they have been extra frisky - we have them crated separately so that they can be quiet and heal. We are taking them out one at a time to potty and short walks round the garden. I had expected them to be quieter than normal, but not so! They just want to run and jump and play more than ever! So, I guess my question was really two questions, first are dogs normally quiet after the operation and second to they settle down over a period of months. We don't really have any issues with barking - if they see something moving around in the garden, they bark and that's normal. Very rarely do they bark for no reason.

Keep an eye on her ... cause if she has two ... maybe question whether it may be a bi-cycle?

It was already ruled out that the discharge is not coming from her anal gland. If we didn't have medical documentation otherwise, it would appear she wasn't spayed.

georgysmom, I'm with you, so I guess we'll have to try a 3rd Vet to hopefully get a diagnosis.

If it has been going on continually for a year, your dog isn't in heat. Could the discharge be coming from the urethra? Is her urine darker? Tea coloured? It would be worth taking the pillow into the vet and actually show the vet what you are talking about. This discharge is not normal, at least I never saw it in any of my female dogs over the years.

I might suggest that they culture that discharge and see exactly what you are dealing with. It's what I would want done. Could be yeast could be something worse. With out a culture not much you can tell. Have they at least examined it microscopically? I have had several spayed female dogs and never seen this. But the fact it has an odor is concerning.
If it were a seasonal episode it would only happen periodically not regularly.

I agree with the idea of a 3rd vet. Possibly she has vaginitis, which can occur for a number of reasons, sometimes an infection, sometimes a tumor, and other reasons.

I would tend to think that some ovarian tissue was missed during the spay surgery. Please see the link.
