Well, TGIF and a happy, happy celebration!

Today was Brendan's first day back at work! It's been a long road, but many thanks to all who supported him and us through this terrible ordeal. He was given last rights three times, but one year and four days after his assault, he is back in uniform. You can read an update at the link below.

In other exciting news, Brian was invited to run in the high school outdoor track championships, one of only 5 sophomores to go. He finished 20th in the country in a very strong field. WooHoo

So, it is an exciting day all-around. The weekend brings me down to earth though, with lots of yard work to continue and cleaning. I now understand the phrase "growing like weeds."

Probably some overtime this weekend too, since work has all of a sudden gotten crazy (don't these people know it's summertime?!)

Well, it's not SO cold here, about 18F, a high of 12F for tomorrow and Sunday, lows below zero. Snow today, tomorrow, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, LOL, welcome to Michigan! Good thing I love it. (grin) Woodie, I might bake some oatmeal cookies myself and take some to Dad. Yes, I take leftovers to Amanda and to Dad, LOL. Stacie, hug that new baby for me. At least your brother can call you! Pixiestix, you're colder than we are. Better bake something. Work on your next contest, or something.... Nancy, put on those sweats. Mine are Carhartts, nice and warm. Fashionable for Michigan too, LOL. Lori, I'll cheer for the Patriots, just for you. So, how much stuff do you have to cook to feed all those boys? Michael, you need a break, you're starting to sound a bit strained. Take care of yourself, will you? Diane, robins? Maybe they can wear some of those old sweaters. (grin) Pam, let's not talk about Christmas decorations, OK? I finally got the lights off the front porch and just realized this morning that I still have a Santa doormat in front of the door. Sigh. I'll be finding stuff until Easter. Maggie, better you than me on those blinds. I completely lack the decorator gene, I just paint everything white! Stacy, that's a good idea, check out camping cabins and think about summer. I love seeing those eagles, we have a pair that nest near the farm but they're elusive. Gina, Florida has better beaches? So I don't need to bring a swimsuit when I come to California? chase, I hope you only get snowed in with people you'd like to be snowed in with! Lee, you're right. Gina needs to post a foot shot... Linda, pile on the wood, it's going to be cold for a while. A bridal shower? You're getting married again? LOL I'm intending to use tomorrow as a cooking day. I want to make some meatballs for Amanda's freezer. (ground beef out of my freezer and into hers, and voila!! I might have some freezer space again) Orange marmalade is on the agenda too, peaches are 99 cents a pound at the grocery store, if they taste good, maybe some sugar free peach syrup for Dad's pancakes. Sunday is the farm and it'll be cold, so nothing will have been done. I'll need to bundle up to fill tanks and hay feeders, feed chickens, fill bird feeders. Monday I'm off work, it's one of those "government holidays". Amanda has Old Navy gift cards and there are 75% off sales right now, so I'm taking her shopping, then hitting Marshall's for dish shopping (like I need any) and then Chuck E. Cheese for lunch. Tuesday I'm still off work. Dad's having surgery on his "good leg", they're going to try to open up some veins to improve his circulation. He's got some diabetic ulcers that won't heal and he's having problems with the artificial knee in that leg. Sigh. He has to be in Grand Rapids at 5:30 a.m. and wants me to drive him, so I have to be at his house at 4 a.m. elery is taking a vacation day from work to come along and keep me company (and keep my sister and stepmom from driving me insane, LOL). Good to see you, Raeanne! We had a wonderful trip. DH and I joined up at the spa for the 12 days to use the private therapy pool, sauna, hot tub, and steam room. It was heavenly; they even served us freshly squeezed orange juice! Let's see, I took a National Park/Island tour of Antigua, swam at Malibu Beach in Barbados, walked into town in Tortola, took a spice tour in a Best-of-Grenada day, and went whale-watching in Dominica (pronounced Dom-en-eeek'-ca ....like the Singing Nun's song!!) I saw more whales in Dominica than I did in Alaska, so that was fun. We saw a sperm whale and her baby right next to our catamaran...our captain showed us the first spout of water (momma), followed by the little spout of water (baby imitating momma!), so we followed the spouts and found them! So cute, I felt one with nature, ladies; you would all have been very proud of me! LOL!!! Back at work, my director is now flying back to the UK. He gave me rave reviews and did not flinch when I asked for a promotion! He promised to get it done if at all possible this year. With complications, he promised to get it completed next year. Fine with me; as I was ready for an argument like I got from my last director. He told me he cannot run the department without me and has suggestions for a few years down the road of transferring me up to higher management levels. Not sure I want that at my age, but the money sure looks good up there, especially as I still will no longer have to manage people...been there, hated that!!!! OK, gotta run some more metrics on 2007 data. TAKE CARE, EAT HEALTHFULLY, AND NEVER NEVER GIVE UP! DeeMarie

Ooops...I started a tgif thread too...GMTA!!! well I will copy and paste here and let the moderators delete my thread. Happy Friday and Happy Graduation to all our forum friends attending graduations and grad parties! Today is supposed to begin a heat wave here in Philly! High 90's for the next few days! YIKES!!! Its so nice out now...just came in for another little cup of joe. I was out admiring the handy work of a few wayward teens. They were bored I guess and they decided it would be so much fun to try to rip down the neighbors railroad tie retaining wall, What they could not rip down they wrote all over with sharpies. I was at work so I did not see anything but I know who it was....there is a bad element here-I suppose most blocks have some sort of problems like this. I think it may be time to take over the block captain job again-the lady who took over for me is not doing a good job-in fact one of her kids is involved with the bad element. On another note...today is Drews last exam. He has short days next week and done on Friday. I will be SO happy to see this year end!! I didn't post too much about it but its been a terrible year for Drew. He just didn't seem to adjust to high school life and my one time honor student is barely passing. Frank and I have been pulling our hair out trying to help him but he is just not motivated. Hopefully after having summer off he'll start 10th grade with a better attitude! Amy and I will hit the gym while he takes his last 2 tests. I am going to try to get my hair cut today too. My "girl" has gone out on early maternity leave so for this cut I may just go to a hair cuttery type place for a trim. Her baby is due in July so I'll have to have another trim befor she returns in Sept-Oct. Tonight I was invited to see my co-worker off to his prom. A co workers prom you ask?? Yes a prom! Theres a young boy who is really a cool kid. Turn out he is Charles BEST friend!! so my co worker is taking Charles sister (my great step neice) to the prom!! Charles does not want to go-more on that later. After that I was invited to a jewelry demonstration. I do not wear a lot of jewelry but I'll go and see...maybe I will get a jump start on holiday shopping?? Tomorrow I have to work early but I also get done early which is good as its the block clean up and I need to be here LOL!! Someone has to talk some sense into these people! LOL!! No really the block needs a good cleaning and we as a community have to work together to make this a safe neighborhood. Tomorrow night Frank and I are going out to dinner...nothing to celebrate really, well maybe celebrate just getting thru the past year LOL!! Sunday is Pocono Race day. The guys get up before the crack of dawn and set up camp on the infield of the Pocono Racetrack and watch the race. I went once and vowed to never go again!! LOL Its LOUD!! However I do help him get ready so he doesn't forget anything. I will no doubt have to work but I will treat myself to something sinful for dinner!! When the kiddies were young, we took them to a student preview. We had prepared them by showing them the movie, telling them the character/story, playing the music (especially the Anvil Chorus) and of course showing them the Marx Brothers A Night at the Opera. DS #2 fell asleep in the car on the way there. He woke up crying I dont want to sit through a three hour opera!. The minute the house lights went down, and the curtain up on the castle scene, his eyes got big and he was enthralled through intermission. We sneaked down from nosebleed to third row center after intermission. After the show he proclaimed mom, if I can sit here, I want to go to operas! Ka-ching, ka-ching.um grow up a bit, kid when you can sit through the Ring cycle, well add you to our subscription. LindaC, every time there is an empty seat by us, I put you there in spirit. Kathleen.enjoy a quiet weekend. I like alternative busy ones with quiet times. [hint: I open a Word document, make it a smaller window, and catch up from there.] Chancesmom, give that girl a hammer and nails and put her to work on that demo. Im the only one in the family that doesnt like chicken/beef on that thing. It was a late dinner because he had spent the afternoon in downtown LA talking with a Bee Keeping company. Because of our garden, we now have a hive on our side yard (pretty sure its Euro not African beasties) and DH wants to keep it but move it down to the bottom of the garden. May not be doable, but hell try. Its next to a row of oleanders and he says honey from those blossoms are toxic, so we wont be harvesting any. Saturday we started setting up our sukkah or booth for the Biblical Festival of the Tabernacles which starts Oct 13th. We come up with humorous decorative themes remodeling (hanging power tools from the roof), disco, my favorite a few years ago was mentally ill bible heroes. Lots of those! This year Im thinking it would be topical to choose either Jewish bankers (good AND bad) or Jewish political candidates. LOL. Last night we took the kids, as part of DS #1s bday present, to see The Capitol Steps; he is into politics. We went out to a good Japanese restaurant, his favorite, before hand. Good laughs. Poor kids bday falls on Yom Kippur eve this year. Bound to happen as he was born the day after YK. Today DH and I are going to a swap meet to pick up more parts for the sukkah. I think Ill put up a pizza (Dougs fault) for tonight. I have to start planning Yom Kippurs dinner meal on Wednesday nightDS #1 has asked for salmon in puff pastry, and I suggested it would be good with an avgolemono sauce, with orzo pilaf on the side he is delighted. Whew, it was easy doing this on Word, with the TGIF thread open in another window, then cutting and pasting! Clinking with water to everyone (big water drinker)!

oh my gosh, I am crying too. What an incredible story about an incredible man from an incredible family...

And Brian - 20th in the country - WOW! That's truly amazing. Don't work too hard Lori - Let the excitement carry over into the weekend a little...

I am behind here too. I had a very slow, very creepy outside house painter here for way too long - I didn't even want to be outside when he was here and I kept all the shades and curtains closed as I never knew what window he was going to show up at next...ewwww.

Today is Scott's b'day - but he is returning from Albany - or Blue Mountain Lodge or something. He won't be home til after dinner...We will celebrate tomorrow.

TGIF to all!

The summer season gets into full swing this weekend here. The crowds are returning and there is something special going on in the area every week. Tomorrow, all the restaurants are under tents, serving up their specialities. Our research and development chef will be in the store making fish taco's using fresh whitefish. Ill sneak out at some point to see what goodies the restaurants are making. There's always strong competition among them.

WHat a wonderful story! I will definitely be clinking to all of you later this afternoon.

Not a lot of excitement here this weekend, going to have a friend "re-do" the new laptop tonight, Vista is just awful so we are having it scrubbed and XP Pro will be reinstalled.

The rest of the weekend is going to be spent working on DS#1 room, we are emptying it for a complete overhaul. Paint, new flooring, etc will be done over the next few weeks.....

Lori, While I think I may have posted only one post on your support threads (I didn't feel like I knew you well enough to say a lot more), I've been watching and hoping right there along with you. Most of us worry about lurkers seeing us in a bad light (when fights can occur), but there are also times they see what's good in you. This time, I'm saying something. Way to go, you've done what few of us could do. Your hardships are great, but your grace and inner strength are greater, well done. Futher, you're blessed to be part of such a great group who has helped you; way to go to those who have helped her. Last, Brendan is an amazing guy who obviously takes nothing for granted. Great job working to get what he wanted. He knows how he got there too. I'm proud of him. Raising my glasses to you, Lori, the Cooking Forum, and to Brendan. You're all wonderful in my book. The greatest of my blessings to you on this Friday!

Wow, that story gives me goosebumps. What a comeback. I will be sure to keep within the speed limit and not drive drunk when I pass through Rhode Island this summer. Troope Doyle is not to be messed with.

My weeked will be a bit like Lori's. I have to edge the grass. I live on a corner and have a sidewalk, so that means three times the perimeter of my property (both sides of the sidewalk and along the curb). Oy. My back hurts thinking about it.

I also have to compose a note to leave in the door of my very weird neighbor who has been playing loud music every night. At least he plays stuff I like, but I really don't want to hear Bruce Springsteen when I'm trying to fall asleep. The neighbor is a very odd duck.

So, this weekend work. I am saving up play time for the Fourth.

Lori, Brendon's story is one of strength, courage, & the miraculous power of love for sure. What a courageous young man. The whole state of Rhode Island is blessed by his recovery.

Kudos to Brian! What an accompishment. You & your entire family are inspirations. Enjoy the gardening. If I were you, I'd just pull out a chair & enjoy your wonderful new view!

Tomorrow is our marina's annual fluke tournament.

We'll leave the marina party early to attend the Seaport's Annual Summer Soltice Party. This year's theme is the Rebirth of New Orleans. Dinner's gumbo and shrimp & andouille sausage jambalaya. Entertainment is Wycliffe Gordon, the 2001 and 2002 Jazz Journalists Association Critics' Choice Award for Best Trombone. At sunset he's going to play from the bow of the 'Joseph Conrad'. Then, it's dancing on the green with Wycliffe's quintet.

Sunday, we'll be too tired for much! Probably, a bit of garden stuff &, as usual, the weekend will be too short.

Stacy, glad the creepy painter is gone. Ick!

Nancy, enjoy the fish tacos & the other goodies. Summer's finally here! Hurray!

Alexa, don't work too hard.

dedtired, take it easy with that edging...don't hurt your back! Hope your neighbor cools it a bit...but, you're right, could be worse than the 'Boss'.

Woohoo is right. Thanks for the update Lori. It's a hell of a story. Brendan is a trooper in more ways than one. I'm going to share his story with Sara. It will be very inspiring for her.

Gorgeous weather here, would love to be up North but have city plans.

My GF is taking me out today for a birthday lunch. Tonight her DH will join us after work here and the four of us will have a few "pops". Barb and I won;t be hungry so I'll order in pizza for them.....or Clive can BBQ.

Tomorrow we have a 60th B-Day party for a friend , Sunday we are going to take a little road trip, maybe the wine country , maybe up to Mennonite country.

Sharon, I had to post again...you made me think of my Great Aunt Evelyn who's been gone a number of years now.

She used to always ask for a glass of 7-up but then she'd tell whoever was getting it to "put a stick in it"...LOL. Once I understood what she meant, I just always thought that was so funny. Enjoy your "pops".

Good to see you happy Lori!

I'll be seeking a cool comfortable chair this weekend to relax in. A little gardening to be done. Dolly has a new game where she runs around me in circles and I have to slap her bottom as she passes. If I fail to take a swipe she stops and looks puzzled. Dolly is quick and I often can't make contact as she whizzes past. This delights her to no end and seems to be her way of scoring a goal. The cats are all disgusted with the dog getting their attention.

Tonight will be a good night to drink under the stars. I have some apple/blueberry wine that is calling for a solstice celebration. Plenty of wine for me and some I will spill as an offering to the earth in memory of those that have walked here before me. Good to be so wealthy that I have wine to make offerings with. Those that wish to join the party only need take their drink outside and we will be together under the stars!

Lori, that's wonderful news about Brendan. Brendan is one of my heroes. We should all live our life with such spirit and will to go on!

I'll keep that in mind today as I started out the morning in a sour mood. Deep breath. Moving on!

Table tennis tournament tomorrow. I'm not playing - I haven't started playing competitively in these tournaments yet. But soon. I will go to cheer on my DH and the club members, and to watch and learn.

Sunday I start Pilates. My car is very dirty. I have to do something about that too :-)

Congrtatulations to Brendan and all who love him. I see Bob's hand in this beyond the 6 monthes he coached him back to health.

Indeed! Oh, I went and got all weepy and now I feel silly for having been so annoyed and bothered that it's going to be so hot this weekend that the yardwork I've wanted to do will be unpleasant rather than a joy. Jeepers, that should be my only challenge!

I will raise my cocktail this evening to the fortitude and steadfast courage of the young American men who reassure me that our country and culture will be equal to the challenges that face us.

TGIF everyone!!

Lori, that it is just so cool...he is a fine young man and it goes to show you what you can do if you give it your all... and it's been a year already...same goes for you... I read your posts but have only posted once or twice. I can honestly say you are an amazing lady.... keep on keepin' on your doing great with all that you have been through this past year...((hugs)) to you and the kids!

Another busy weekend here, just got in after dinner out with friends. Helping take care of DS kids this weekend while she takes in her 20th high school reunion..pool day tomorrow and a BBQ. Sunday is chores and I hope to go check out some new flooring for the kitchen...not sure if that will happen or not..lol..I'll probably sleep in.

Joining lyra and the rest of you with a late night clink under the stars and a dip in the pool...

Woohoo is right! I'm all choked up after reading about Brendan's amazing recovery and return to his job. What a guy! Bob must have been a wonderful dad, and whoohoo to Brian too! You and your family are such an inspiration!

Today was graduation, 22 seniors were roasted and toasted as they graduated in the hot sun today. 3 cheers to them, their parents and the fabulous school staff!
The staff celebrated following graduation and then dinner with DH at a delicious restaurant nearby. It was scorching hot today and tomorrow looks like more of the same. Clinking with something tall and cool!

WTG Brendan! Lori, is that the good news in his future you alluded to in Support #7 or is there something more?

Lyra, it has been so hot here (Ellen how did everyone get through graduation!!!) that we still had the A/C on at 9:30 at night. More today and tomorrow.

Yesterday I took DS #1 to the DMV to take his written provisional driver license test. He passed, dang. California requires six hours profe$$ional driver training, and that starts next Saturday! Clear the roads!

Tonight I go to my High School 30th reiunion. I have't even been to one of them. I contacted someone I used to be freinds with and we're looking forward to hooking up again. I'm leaving DH at home - why do people take spouses, they will only be bored! I'm going with a synagogue member - someone connected the dots for us. We never knew each other in high school, but interact a lot now. Small world.

Tomorrow I dump DS #2 off at computer camp. Heh heh. Buh-bye!

Trying to stay cool. It will be record breaking HOT here this weekend, so hot I didn't make a challah yesterday, I didn't want to turn on the oven. Yikes!

Jess, We didn't have any major casualties during the 2+hour ceremony, but I was dripping! Many stayed in the hot sun, --luckily it's held at the Yacht Club at the Marina, but others retreated far to the rear which held some shade. Frankly, the ceremony was too darn long and the class was large. Next year's class is larger, so a change in the format must be made. I slathered the sun screen and wore a white linen shirt over my sleeveless tank and slacks,but my chest still found a way to get slightly burned. I was the photographer, so didn't wear a hat (it interferes with my camera) but next year if it's hot, I'm NOT sitting out in the sun, let them hire someone else! LOL

I forgot to comment on beautiful Sara! Sharon, she looks fabulous, from that photo I have no idea about facial paralysis, just a beautiful smile. I thought she might have had to shave her head, but it looks like most if not all of her hair is in tact. Good for Sara, and she really looks happy about those ribs!

Lots of good, happy news on the forum this weekend! Congrats to both Brendan and Sara for working so hard and overcoming such challenges!

Baseball, baseball, and more baseball this weekend. Munchkin #2 is playing a tournament, but as they have not yet won a game, we should be done tonight.
