Whirlpool 5300 TL ATC hack

I am looking at getting a Whirlpool 5300 for my mom next weekend when I expect some sales.

The model seems to be pretty good for what I am looking for, a $400-$450 TL with agitator. The main criticism of this model seems to be that for the past tw0 years the ATC has been lowered to 70 degrees Fahrenheit for warm -- which is insane.

There seems to be a hack using a $35 replaceable ATC part number 8578335 which seems to be relatively easy to install for someone like myself who has replaced the occasional motor and switches on washers, and is claimed to set the warm at a more reasonable 90 degrees.

Any washer experts here who know if this part itself hasn't been "improved" down to 70 degrees?

Please don't comment if you don't know, of course it does and the fact that the HOT and Warm ATC has been moved a full 20 degrees colder is a big complaint on these WTW5300 machines.

Have you even seen one? Whirlpool had to put a sticker explaining why "Warm" being cold and "hot" being warm right on the lid because people were getting ticked off at the change in the WTW5300 ATC settings.

Anyway I asked on another forum and replacing the ATC with an older ATC will work fine. About $35 and five minutes work.

sue15c, I'll tell you my ideas about why FL's clean better than agitator TL's, and why some FL's disappoint some owners. They're based on long-time use of agitator TL's, followed by six months and counting with an FL. Sorry for the long post, but since you asked three times, I figure you really want to know :-) No opinion on HE TL's, having never used one. 1) Washing action: In an FL, the entire load is tumbling around, so everything is continually rubbing (but lubricated by water), flexing, and falling against the drum. In a fully-loaded agitator TL, only part of the load is exposed to vigorous washing action at a given time. 2) Length of wash cycle: Some FL's, like mine, have pretty long wash cycles on at least some cycle selections, with an option to make them even longer. A half-hour wash cycle gives plenty of exposure to the washing action, and to detergent and other products. A full hour wash cycle is even more exposure, and is great to have available for dirty stuff. Agitator TL's have shorter wash cycles, maximum of 15 or so minutes in my experience. Some FL manufacturers also use short wash cycles, to satisfy users who want quick turnaround of their wash loads. Obviously (to me anyway), a shorter wash cycle means weaker cleaning performance. Also, it takes a few minutes for a large load to be entirely wetted. So if a wash cycle time of, say, 8 minutes includes the time to soak the load, then I imagine there's even less time for actual cleaning. 3) Wash temperature: The advantage here can go to FL or to agitator TL, depending on your plumbing and the features of the particular FL. If your hot water runs cold for a while, before turning hot, an agitator TL may still fill with mostly hot water, because the initial cold water is only part of the fill. But the much smaller fill of an FL may consist entirely of the cold water, even if you wanted warm or hot. So if that's your plumbing setup, and you replace an agitator TL with an FL with no heater, or a heater that's not programmed to boost the temperature on all cycles, then your washes may end up being cooler than you're used to. That'll affect cleaning performance. Maybe this hit is balanced out by better wash action on the FL, in some cases? I don't know. In contrast, an FL with a fully functioning heater, which boosts and maintains the temperature on all cycles, with a wide selection of wash temperatures, can have a definite advantage over an agitator TL, since water temperature is an important factor in cleaning performance. Unfortunately many FL's fall short of this ideal. But most if not all FL's with a heater have at least a super-hot "sanitary" cycle, with exceptional cleaning for fabrics that can stand the temperature. Also re temperature: Even with an ideal plumbing setup, most any new washer, FL or TL, will do warm and perhaps hot washes at a lower temperature than the older machine you're replacing. Among FL's, Miele is the only exception I know of. Among agitator TL's, the Speed Queen seems to be non-temperature-controlled, but I hear it uses more cold than hot in its warm mix. So its warm could also be cooler than you're used to, unless your hot supply is very hot.

I went into Lowe's today and purchased a bare bones top loader washer and dryer. I wasn't going to get another Whirlpool, but I've gotten to know and trust a nice lady that works there, and she said she has had great feedback on this model....including from a relative who normally buys the most expensive bells and whistles of everything. I don't recall the whole model number, but it had the numbers 5300 in it. They had to order me a set because they sold out, but will be delivered in a week. Hopefully, I can keep the Duet limping along. The nice part? Both the washer and dryer are less than the cost of a front load washer alone. If they last only 5 years I won't be as torked. I didn't want a computer board, and I wanted to be able to select my own water levels. I don't waste water and have enough sense to wash my clothes without a computer. Any repairs on this machine should be simple. I found someone who wants my Duet washer and dryer and I am giving it to them. They understand that they will need either a computer board and/or motor for the washer. I'm guessing a motor. The dryer still works fine. I didn't feel right trying to sell them. If I find that I can't fit a quilt in the TL washer, I MAY purchase an extremely cheap front load washer and set it up in the barn. At least it would have a new warranty and only be used sometimes (only for our quilts or mattress pads). I don't know how good they are, but there was a Frigidaire FL for $399. It may be junk. I wouldn't want it for everyday, but for what I need it for, it might be fine. It's cheaper than fixing the Duet.

Hi Sunny! Come on in, we don't bite (much). I don't know the Whirlpools very well but the Speed Queens have an excellent reputation for reliability and ruggedness as sqfan mentions. I was almost going to get a front loader for myself but decided that the wash times were too short. But you are looking at a top loader so you are OK. Have you done a compare and contrast of the features - cycles, temps, speeds, etc.? Do the doors open the direction they should for your dryer set up, if you care? I'm pretty sure most (even us rabid FL laundyholics) would agree here that all TLs do an adequate job cleaning and would meet your needs, so it comes down to features and reliability. Unless someone else chimes in about the Whirlpool I would also look at the warranty AND future availability of service companies that can come to your home should a unit need work as make or break factors.

The Kenmore had a bad bearing..about $400 but the store had it hauled off..bummer. I am getting another Speed Queen ...a model TR5000 with water levels you can set..They hadn't informed me of the auto setting with rinses being cold water. I have my water heater set pretty hi. I WILL get this washer to do what I want..not what it wants..Cancel the wash and reset so I can get it to agitate several times..some fiddling cancels the warranty..but since the machine is supposed to last 20 years..maybe a chance I will take. I can handle machines and can do major repairs though as I said I've done plenty this life time..I'm 68. It is pretty pathetic that machines are no longer made to suit our needs. And that our government has become like a helicopter parent..Some idiot blows it and the rest of us suffer. Front loaders are more dangerous than top loaders anyhow. Most of the accidents I found were do to parents not watching their kids. One was where a washer fell on a kid?? WTF how the hell does that happen? Or parents set a baby in a carrier on top of the washer and the kid fell off. And don't get me started on refrigerators ok then flat screen tv's..seems not much is made to last anymore..try finding towels or sheets that last 20 years anymore..just a crabby old woman complaining about how it used to be!! hahaha

If the other ATC fits... do it! I can't believe they lowered the temps even further. It's really a shame US manufacturers are doing everything to make their appliances beyond efficient. From looking at the wiring sheet (the closest match I could find for WTW5300) it looks as if Cool and Hot are temp controlled. Warm is probably a mix or 30% hot and 70% cold - or so. You might want to try combining Hot and Super Wash. Some older ATC systems would then override the ATC hot and deliver a tap hot fill. See here.

How high is the Super Plus water level? I've read that modern TLs have also lowered the max water level resulting in less capacity or more stress on the fabrics. You might want to try www.automaticwasher.org. They'll help you to raise the temp and water level.

The parts diagram you linked for WTW5300SQ0 shows item #18 in the Controls and Rear Panel Parts as being "Valve, Water Inlet W/Bi-Metal."

Assuming Whirlpool doesn't have the wrong wiring diagram linked to WTW5300SQ0, it shows a 3-temp selector with a bi-metal thermostat on the cold solenoid in the switch logic for the hot selection, or a 4-temp selector with a bi-metal on the cold solenoid for the hot selection and on the hot solenoid for the cool selection. Warm is not indicated to be bi-metal controlled but the valve probably physically mixes warm at a higher proportion toward cold as speculated above.

LOL. I don't get your point. You are referencing the SQ? it is discontinued.

Lots of old models of many machines did not have atc. ATC is the core element in the tax kickback to makers, it is actually cheaper for them to include it then not. Which is why it is being increasing included on TL machines.

I don't understand why you would be reference a model discontinued for some time and not sold by any store?

LOL, you are just proving you don't know.
I do not know why you are tolling my post?

Anyone and EVERYONE checking lowes, Best Buy, Sears, Whirlpools own site and ALL serious retailers knows the SQ was long ago discontinued and is not carried by anyone.

Even those links YOU showed indicate out of stock and discontinued! The second one shows out of stock right on the page, and the first one will not let you complete the transaction, meaning they have an OLD forgotten web page you googled without actually confirming.

I was trying to get some information, not asking to be trolled by someone who KNOWS after looking that the WV is the ONLY one made by whirlpool in quite sometime and the only model of the 5300 sold by any serious retailer.

may be discontinued soon ?

If you would have posted the complete model number in your original post, none of this would have occured.

You'll need to remember to use the complete model number when requesting parts or service.

This is like, so bogus....

Wash temperatures on my Miele W1926:

Cold: tap cold to 85Â°F
Warm: 105Â°F to 120Â°F
Hot: 140Â°F to 190Â°F

If you're stuck with an unmodified new Whirlpool, obviously you can select "hot" when you want warm water, and "warm" when you want cool. Not much you can do if you want hot water though.... Older ATC machines often allowed ATC to be disabled; then you could at least temporarily shut off the cold-water valve (in most installations) during the initial fill, then turn it back on.

Reminds me of the chocolate bars I saw awhile back labeled "25% less calories than our regular bar" - because it was 25% smaller....

Be careful when buying. The manufacturers are taking advantage of every loophole in Energy Star certification, etc.
