Dryers with no heat settings .....

I recently bought a GE profile washer and dryer set. Top loader. I know most people prefer the front but i had concerns about my clothes eventually having a musty smell. At any rate, that's not the point of this thread.

The dryer has a no heat setting. There's a rack inside you lay your sweater or whatever on and the barrel just spins around with no heat.

Well it doesn't work. My clothes are just as wet feeling after many many minutes. This isn't the reason i picked this set of machines but it sounded like a nice feature for those winter days where I can hang stuff outside or things that you're not suppose to stick in the dryer.

I was just curious if anyone else had this happen to them?

You are squeezing excess water out of the sweater first? NOT placing it in the dryer dripping/sopping wet, I hope. Air drying by nature IS going to take significantly longer than drying with heat. The only difference between placing the sweater on the rack inside the dryer, or placing it on a rack on your bathroom counter is that the dryer has forced airflow inside -- sort of like aiming a fan at the rack on the bathroom counter.

The no-heat setting on some used to be (and maybe still is) called "air fluff". The primary purpose is to fluff up a load without adding heat. One use is when line drying things and they're stiff. The fluffing will soften them up.

Will your sweater allow a low heat dry? I would think most would. As dadoes said it should cut your drying time. A few minutes of air without heat wouldn't make a noticeable difference I wouldn't think. I'd check the label and see if you can use at least a low heat

It's common nowadays on dryers with electronic controls that the temp is hardset to each fabric/cycle selection on autodry/sensor cycles. Timed-dry allows changing the temperature choice. Casual-type (perm press) cycles typically use medium heat, so high is unusual but not outside possibility. Since this dryer is new to you, try different fabric cycles, see if the heat setting changes per the selection. If so, consider choosing an autodry cycle per the heat you want rather than the labeled fabric/load type.

I just got mine less than a week ago, and you're right, it cannot go to med/low. However, I used the perm press cycle and the clothes came out perfect. If you want to lower the temp, you may have to put it on a manual setting like time dry with wrinkle prevent and pick the temp. But as I said, my clothes were perfect - no wrinkles/no shrinkage on the med setting.

Too many other factors will affect actual energy usage to make this an easy apples to apples comparison. For example, if you have no heat or a/c on at home, I might be willing to bet this would come out cheaper. On the other hand, if it's high summer or winter, then you have to factor in the hidden costs of all the extra air you've already paid to heat or cool in your house that is being sucked up by the dryer and blown right outside. Will the costs of heating then blowing that air outside offset the lower energy usage of your dryer on a lower heat setting; I have absolutely no idea, and wouldn't even want to try to measure it, but it is there. My personal pet peeve is with summer on the rare times I run the a/c. You draw in and cool air off, then the dryer sucks it in, heats it back up, then blows it right back outside. The idea of this drives me bonkers, and I always open the window in my laundry room, close the register and door while running the dryer under said conditions. I always wonder why nobody ever made an external connection for *incoming* air also! :)

Theoretically (but NOT assuredly) Perm Press would be a bit cooler. Some *older* Maytag dryers actually ran warmer on Perm Press for purpose of "ironing out" wrinkles. A way you can check is measure the exhaust temperature with an instant-read kitchen thermometer. Note that the temperature will swing between a higher and lower extreme as the element or gas burner cycles on/off, but you should be able to garner an average as a target temp for each setting.

Can you use the drying rack with other temps? I think the rack is for sweaters and wool, things that shrink or need to be dried flat. I also use mine to dry wet shoes.

I have a no heat setting and an warm setting and both can use the rack. I've tried the no heat setting and you don't get any heat to dry things unless you wanna wait all day or something.

Another thing I do with garments that say "do not tumble lay flat to dry pull to shape" Is stick them in the dryer on low heat for a few minutes, then turn off the heat. The little shot of heat gets things moving faster.

I do squeeze the excess water out. i guess it does makes sense that it would take longer. I'm sure i could use the rack also with heat. Thanks for the tips guys!

I use my rack with low heat to dry sweaters, boot liners, sneakers, and other things that can't be tumbled. I have had a rack with each of my dryers for the past 18 years and they can be very useful. I have never used mine with fluff though, I would just lay the item on my drying rack rather than use the dryer if the item can't take any heat.

jcrowley-you lay your item on the rack inside with the noheat turned on. you take the rack out and just lay the item on the rack to air dry? i'm sorry that's not sinking in!
