Buying Washing machine: Recommendations?

Well Sears service just left and officially pronounced our washer dead. It's a Calypso (I know!) and repairs would run at least $300. This machine is 5 years old and has already had the computer replaced once. I hate it and have almost since day one.

So, that said, we are looking for a replacement. I do not want to make a mistake like we did with the Claypso, so I'm asking for advice. We are a family of 4 that includes 2 boys and pets and we do lots of laundry. I want something that can handle large frequent loads and will hopefully last beyond five years. I'm leary of Sears/Whirlpool for obvious reasons. I'm also concerned about the reliabilty of front loaders.

What should we look for in a washer? Brands? Any reason not to consider a toploader?

I have had the GE Harmony set for about 3 years with no problems. I love it. I believe the principal is the same as the Calypso, it is a TL without the agitator so it holds a ton of clothes. My father-in-law recently replaced his "no good piece of junk" Calypso (also about 5 years old) with a Harmony set and he is very pleased. We have 4 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats so it gets quite a workout between the really dirty clothes (2 young boys) and lots of pet hair. Good luck in your search!

I'm a single guy with two cats and king size bedding, I got a frigidaire Front loader 2 years ago. I could not me too much happier with it. I really wanted a unit with a heater but didn't want to spend that much $$$. so far no trouble and I do alot of wash for one person. washing sheets every week, comforters and slip covers every 2 weeks. 2 or 3 loads of clothes and a load of whites and towels every week. it does good with cat hair and whats left after the wash is beat out in the dryer. washes better than the GE TL I had that lasted for 6 years and my comforter fits in it unlike the old traditional TL. no trips to the laundy, fussing with change and waiting for a double size FL to be free on weekends any more.

I have a set of LG Tromm's. I love them but my washer is being serviced right now. I bought them in September of 2003. I have three dogs and I wash their beds every week. So, my washer has seriously had a workout. The beds are very heavy. Regardless, of the washer needing fixed, I will definitely buy this brand the next time also. The repairman phoned a few minutes ago to say that the parts will take 10 days to come in and that the cost is going to be $187 for the parts. When he came today to look at my washer, he said that I'm using too much soap. I have been using regular soap. He said that I should use HE soap but that if I don't want to, that I should use 1/4 of what is normal. I told them that I already dilute the soap by 50% with water. He said that is good but if I was going to do that and use regular soap to dilute it 75% water and 25% soap. He said that if you see the washer full of suds when you're washing, that there is way too much soap and the pumps cannot siphon all the suds and the sensors will get messed up. He also said the top soap dispensing assembly can be removed by taking out the 4 screws and that I could run it through the dishwasher to clean it. My mom was here and she has Whirlpool machines and he told her that for hers, she can hold down a pin and that her soap dispenser would come out and that she could run hers through the dish washer. He told her to clean the top of hers also when the dispenser was out. Finally, he told me to clean the glass once a week. He said that dirt/hair will accumulate on the bottom of the glass and since that sits against the seal, if it's dirty it may start to seep water which will result in a streak down the front of the washer. He just said to clean the glass once a week and to wipe down the seal once a week. Again - I love this washer and dryer. I recommend them to anyone. I don't think anyone who changes from top loaders to front loaders go back after they've had the front loaders. Oh ya - I have the pedestals that raise them up. Definitely love these things too.

Any frontloader needs to have the door propped open to prevent mold formation. You need to keep the lid of the toploader open too for the same reason. Who are the best repair service providers in your area? Be sure you have local service for any machine you select. Frontloader LGs have a small magnetic prop that lets the door stay cracked open for ventilation. The only brand I would not consider is the Samsung due to many plastic parts, lack of availability of parts for repair and a reputation for poor customer service. I have the huge LG 5.2 cu ft. and like it very much. My machine is very wide so might not fit in your space. Look at some of the other 4.5 cu ft models. I'm sure you'll find something.

Also - I just read the article at the reviewed.com site and it is very impressive but wow --the comments are almost entirely negative (albeit largely one very unhappy person). Can you use Charlie's HE soap powder in the Electrolux (that's the soap that did away with any odor issues in the Duet), or do you have to use liquid? And can you wash pet beds and rugs, etc. with dog hair and not have problems? Does water collect in the soap dispenser? Thanks again - very much appreciate your taking the time to help!

I just moved my laundry to 2nd fl of old house and was concerned w/ vibrations of FL so went w/ the best TL which was a Fisher Paykel specifically the Ecosmart GWL15....user friendly, choice of 4 different spin speeds, it auto senses the correct amt of water for each load and/or you can specifically select diff. water levels yourself...I researched the heck out of this, consumer reports, reading for weeks on this site and this is what I purchased and I am very pleased. Have had 2 weeks....

F&P washers seem to get very high marks here. I know one person that got a set. she said she loved them compaired to what she had before. I looked at them too they seem very well made and look easy to use. good choice if you want a top load and want energy and water savings, I would think.
