Bryant Evolution 16 or Trane XL15i? XL20i?

just wondering if all is equal and the installation were good for both contractors, what would be the better system to install?

Bryant Evolution 16 or a Trane XL15i or XL20i?

I do plan on getting the perfect fit filter, getting them to run a manual J as well as do some weatherization.

Which would save more money over time? or are there better bryant evolution systems? Scroll compressor vs the 2 compressors in Trane's unit? Benefit of either?

What is your location?

Both are top end systems.

I really like Trane's XL20i better than the Evolution 16 mainly because of the electronic demand defrost feature.

I do encourage you to get a staged heat strip for aux and backup heat.

Trane's XL 20i has a 50/100 split on low and high stg. The Bryant system has a 66/100 split.

You would be happy with either system.

Austin, TX. Is the 66/100 split more effective? I heard of people trying to downsize equipment, when is it more effective to downsize and any drawbacks? does it just take too long to cool down?

Does anyone have any information on the Bryant 285B Evolution? It's a single stage evolution system that i saw on the AHRI directory.

I purchased the Trane XL15i 4-ton (condenser no heat pump) and the XV95 100k btu furnace with a 5 ton e-coil in NJ for $8800 after a $300 rebate from trane and a $700 rebate from the utility company. Also included was the small Trane bypass humidifier (which was listed as $200) and the TC803 thermostat, a chimney liner, 10 years parts warranty, 2 years labor. My actul SEER for my components is 14.5 for the 15i. From what I can tell all things being equal, even though it is called a 15i, they can be configured to deliver as high as 16 seer (probally for the smallest version)but my unit is one of the higher ton versions (4-ton) and even though I have the furnace with the variable speed blower and the higher 5-ton coil for improved efficiency, My unit still can only get up to 14.5 Seer. if it's in the garage, then it probably has flex ran down to a return box in the garage. Normally I see here in N Fl 18" duct ran for 5 ton, because it seems to be the minimum you can get by with. The better would be 22" then 20" but you will be restricted by ceiling joist space with 22" inch flex. Or when I see a improper 16" flex run I give the customer an option to upgrade to a larger diameter of flex or run another 16" flex to the return box. Now I'm talking real world stuff, I don't want to get blasted by numbers in a book because the numbers are not correct per book. The minimum that I would ever use is 18" round flex, after doing tests with Bryant Evloution equipment these systems actually test static pressure when they run, for 5 tons, 18" return and 16" supply is the minimum I would go with only because of real field test results. I'm not sure what the contractor has plans for. If you don't enlarge the flex or add another flex to the return box then enlarging the grill doesn't do anything for the return. Next, what I do, and most contractors don't is on every home that has a 5 ton system, I give the customer an option to go with zoning. Some elect not to zone but some do because it really works if set up correctly. With that I can drop the tonnage of the system to a 3 or 4 tons(depends how many zones are implemented) and then there is absolutely no issue with return air. With that said you want a contractor that has experience in doing zoning.

I not sure what you mean by 'effective'. More effective at saving electricity or more effective at cooling or more effective at humidity removal?

With a 4-ton system, a 50/100 will give you 2 tons of cooling at stage one and 4 tons at stage two. With a 66/100 system you will get 2.67 ton of cooling on stage one.

So the question is how much do you really need. That always depends on the situation (outside temp, sun load, etc) at the time. Eventually the thermostat will determine whether to kick in to stage two if the inside temperature is not coming down quick enough.

What's the price difference between the sgl stage Evolution and two stg Evolution? Versus the two stg XL20i?

Your question about downsizing is confusing. Cooling and heating loads determine the size you require. I certainly don't won't to be borderline or undersized in your area/summer climate.

Weedmeister - more effective @ cooling. and i guess in the summers it does get up to 100, this summer maybe extreme but it's been in the hundreds for a good 3 months.

it's replacing a 4ton system. I'm not too sure what the difference in price is between the evolution single stage vs 2 stage since i just noticed that system on the ahri website. what would be a good difference to take a single stage?

the xl20i with tam7 is $700 more expensive than the evolution 16 (2 stage)

downsize was based on sometimes after a manual J, the load could still be over compensated just a little bit. I plan on making some improvements made to the house like solar screens. Anyone know how much this helps? And sealing up a 15% leakage in the ducts. (15% leakage was determined in 2009 prior to us buying the house)
