Quotes for Carrier Infinity & Trane XL15i - advice please

Here are the two quotes I am considering.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Our current systems are original from 1998 and both are low on refrigerant. When working, A/C and heat were adequate.

Issues include: Master bedroom is cold in the winter (thermostat is located there); two of the three remaining bedrooms are fine in winter/summer, the third is hot in the summer (west facing) and cold in the winter (at the end of the supply duct I think).

Proposal #1 adds a return in the MBR (no mention of a return in the basement), #2 adds a return in the basement (and did not recommend a return in the MBR).

We have three kids and keep all their bedroom doors completely closed from 7pm to 7am while they are sleeping. We close our MBR double doors from 11pm to 6am (upstairs has a single 20 x 20 return in the upstairs hallway).

Do the Carrier quotes include the rebate? They should total $2200. Is it too difficult to replace the linesets? Does the Carrier quote include the 10 year labor warranty from Carrier? Was a load calculation done by either contractor? What media filter is being proposed for the Carrier quote?

The Carrier equipment is very nice. If you have humid summers you will enjoy the 2-stage AC. The only suggestion I have is to consider upgrading the basement furnace to a 95%+ efficiency unit.

I am not the Trane expert, but I think it is also good equipment. The AC are single stage which if sized properly should also give good humidity control.

Both quotes are have rebates included ($2200 for Carrier).

No load calc for either quote but a third vendor sort of did a calc (measured all rooms and windows, ran some numbers on the spot) and recommended a 2 ton A/C in the attic and 2.5 ton A/C in the basement (vs 2 and 3 tons for the above quotes) for the same Carrier equipment.

Not sure if the 10 year labor warranty is from Carrier direct or the installer.

Lineset for the basement would require tearing up some of the finished space in the basement. Not sure how the lineset is routed from outside to the attic.

Not sure if anything but a 1" filter is proposed for the Carrier quote.

Going to a 95% furnace will require running add'l PVC piping to the outside, correct?

I purchased the Trane XL15i 4-ton (condenser no heat pump) and the XV95 100k btu furnace with a 5 ton e-coil in NJ for $8800 after a $300 rebate from trane and a $700 rebate from the utility company. Also included was the small Trane bypass humidifier (which was listed as $200) and the TC803 thermostat, a chimney liner, 10 years parts warranty, 2 years labor. My actul SEER for my components is 14.5 for the 15i. From what I can tell all things being equal, even though it is called a 15i, they can be configured to deliver as high as 16 seer (probally for the smallest version)but my unit is one of the higher ton versions (4-ton) and even though I have the furnace with the variable speed blower and the higher 5-ton coil for improved efficiency, My unit still can only get up to 14.5 Seer. Thanks classicdave & tigerdunes Sorry for not getting back to you guy's. Was supposed to get email notification of responses, but they never arrived. Really responsive contractor! His load calc was between 2 & 2 1/2 ton, so suggested 2 1/2. classicdave - 10 yr parts & labor on both units. He likes both mfg. equally, but says the Lennox XP17 is dual source ready to add solar panels in the future. tigerdunes - inland lake location used most from April-Oct., much less in othr cooler months. Hopefully will be year round in about 5 yrs so planning ahead. Considering: 1) Trane will be $600 more since Lennox is offering cash back until June 30 2) Lennox is dual source ready for solar 3) Equal 10 yr. p&l warranty 4) Both will have riser feet underneat to raise unit 4"-6" above pad 5) Lennox 62 sones...very quiet Any more opinions, suggestions...clarification of staged heat strips or any other recommended "features" would be appreciated I would probably have gone with a Carrier, but the contractor won't respond...not a good sign...& it's hard to find others to service with good price due to rural location.

Some additional information: House is single story 1775 square foot. Existing unit is an electric 2 ton carrier AC unit (38TRA024320) with a 3 ton coil, failing and needs to be replaced. Furnace is gas and 60K BTU's, working fine but is 11+ years old and if I replace it now I can get the tax credit. Humidity has been a issue since I moved into the house 3 years ago. Both the Trane and Carrier dealers felt the return was not enough and both felt that expanding the interface between the wall cavity and the unit in the crawl space would be enough. After talking with the Carrier dealer today, for $700 additional I could add 10 years labor. He mentioned the warranty would be purchased by them through Carrier and it would be their company required to do the repairs. Carrier dealer also offered to put a return into the master bed-room at no additional cost. Trane dealer stated that the Trane 803 is made by Honeywell and will control humidity via Comfort-R. Also mentioned that the 900 series is for the communicating XL20I furnace. Think I need to get a little smarter on the controllers. Both dealers also indicated that their system would meet the $1500 tax credit. (Need to check and see if reducing to the carrier two stage (vice three stage) furnace would still qualify for the tax credit) $9020.00 Carrier $7897.00 Trane Does that seem like a fair estimate for the equipment and do think the Carrier would be worth spending the extra dollars for? lisa shop around. pricing is absurd. wrong stat quoted. look at a Carrier Infinity MVC with Performance 15 HP . I would consider zoning controls between the two floors for best comfort,control, and operating cost. Ductwork to the FROG should be designed correctly since they are notorious to heat and cool. what is your location? what is your electric rate? IMO

High efficiency furnaces need to be vented through PVC piping to an exterior wall. This adds more labor and material costs. A 95%+ efficiency furnace may also qualify for a local utility rebate. This is worth investigating.

Ask the Carrier contractor about a 4 inch filter. I recommend getting it if it can fit and the cost is reasonable.

If the contractor is a Carrier Factory Authorized dealer, then it is probably a Carrier labor warranty.

Any comments on York Affinity vs Carrier Infinity vs Trane?

York and Trane proposals are 80KBTUh/60KBTUh (main/attic). Carrier is 66KBTUh for both systems. Any thoughts?

One would assume heating load would be higher in main level plus basement than on the upper level. Unless much of the upper level is over an unheated garage, it seems odd that a company would propose identically sized furnaces for both.

It sounds correct that all companies have proposed a larger upstairs air conditioner than you have now.

Of course, without a load calculation, I am speculating. FWIW, I am sitting right now in a house cooled by a 24 year old Carrier compressor. Matching furnace was replaced in 2006, with new coil. Maybe you're giving up on your systems too soon?
