Can I shorten a hot water baseboard register?

Hello All-

Within the past week, I purchased a Osburn pellet stove as an alternative Winter heat source in my home. In one of the corners of my kitchen, there's an ideal spot for proper ventilation of the stove as well as a space to build a stone hearth.

Unfortunately, I have two long hot water baseboard registers that extend to within 16 inches of the corner space where I'm considering building the hearth.

My question is:

Where I have access to the hot water copper tubing loop from the basement and I'm somewhat comfortable working/soldering copper tubing, can I remove some of the fins (vains?) from the copper tubing, make a cut in the existing register tubing and then re-route the pipe back through the floor into the basement?

Essentially, I would be modifying a 6 foot register into a 4 foot register. This would give me enough clearance to build the hearth.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin
