Breville kitchen toys

After years of putting up with hand blenders and splashing ingredients all over the kitchen, I finally broke down and bought a real dedicated blender. It's a Breville Ikon Hemisphere blender. It was 149 at Macys, and I was very pleased to learn they have a 6 month return policy should anything go wrong. Well, I have fallen in love with this thing, and it has earned a permanent spot on my very limited counter top. It has so many awesome features from the auto pulse to the bowl blade to the finger loop in the plug. It's not too loud, and does a fabulous job on smoothies. I can't wait to try it for hummus and powdered sugar! I haven't been cooking much lately, and this was just the thing I needed to get me back in the kitchen. I may even get a blender cook book just to have excuses to use it. I'd totally recommend it to anyone looking for a nice well thought out blender.

Anyway, I haven't seen Breville discussed here much if at all, and when I was in Williams Sonoma yesterday, I noticed they now have the Breville stand mixer right along side the Kithchen Aids (though I didn't notice the Cuisinart anymore, maybe it wasn't selling, or I just didn't see it). The Breville mixer even comes with a batter blade and looks really cool. If my Kitchen Aid died, I'd get the Breville in a heart beat. I know people also rave about their juicers. Just wondering if any of you here have tried Breville kitchen appliances, and if so, what you think of them?

It looks really impressive - certainly better than my feeble little one. When mine goes to blender heaven, I'll get one like that. Thanks for the info.

I would LOVE to get a new blender. I am still using the one I got as a wedding present in 1980! It's harvest gold.

But the reason I still use it is pretty much the same reason I can't justify spending $$ on a new one. I just don't use it that often. I'm sure that contraption is going to outlive me!

Glenda, I haven't used a Foley's Food Mill in years so I don't know that I can compare the performance of the two. And, come to think of it, I wonder what happened to my food mill? I had it when we moved here. Anyway.... I chose this particular tomato strainer because it was highly recommended over and over and over again by quite a few of the hard-core food processors at the Harvest Forum. I especially wanted it because of the set of extra screens, which if my memory is correct are for salsa (I've used that one and it is great), pumpkin/winter squash and berries. I used the salsa screen to make two different batches of salsa and both turned out perfectly. I then used the sauce screen to make plain tomato sauce which I then used to make pasta sauce for dinner. The sauce screen gives you perfect sauce with not one little piece of peel or seed or core. The sauce was just gorgeous to look at. I haven't tried the other two screens yet. Turning the hand crank was easy, the machine didn't leak, the suction cup adhered to the counnter, etc. When I get old and frail, LOL, I can buy the optional engine and use it instead of the handcrank. Or, if I should develop carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis or something that makes manual operation difficult, it is nice to know there is a little motor available to turn the handle for you. I do have a Kitchen Aid mixer and it is only about 5 years old and probably will last forever. So, for me, it is likely that the best grain mill option would be to get the Grain Mill accessory for the Kitchen Aid. As for the Food Saver, I remain undecided about that, but I really do want one and bet I go ahead and get one before next spring. We buy a lot of meat in bulk at Sam's and CostCo and repackage it, and I keep 3 freezers pretty full of home-grown veggies and fruits, so having the food saver to vacuum seal bags and cannisters would be quite useful. All the kitchen gear does add up to a lot of money over time, but I think I'll use them enough to make it worthwhile. For years I wanted these 'harvest helpers' and couldn't/wouldn't spend the money for them because we were putting our son through college. In a good year when it rains, I can put up enough veggies from the garden and fruit from the fruit trees to make a huge dent in a grocery bill. In a drought year, though, the harvest is not as heavy and I don't put up as much stuff. So, in a good year, I need all the equipment in order to put up as much of the harvest as possible as quickly as possible. I've gotten a lot more serious about raising more and more of our food supply the last few years. Homegrown is just so much tastier, and it is better for the environment because the food we're raising isn't having to travel to our home from grocery stores that get it from South America or even from California. Since reading "Animal Vegetable Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver, I've tried to become more serious about eating locally-raised food--and not just locally raised, but home-grown as much as possible. I'd like to think that if I am serious and work a little harder on getting great yields, I could raise most of our food in future years and all those 'harvest helper' type kitchen gadgets will get a good workout. Glad to answer--I thought the brownie pan would come in handy, but when I actually got down to using it, it's very inconvenient! In fact, when I purchased it, I asked if I could return it after use if it wasn't "all that" and the store manager (who was on the cash register) said no problem. Now that I've baked a batch of brownies in the pan, I'm not happy with the way they release from their little squares, and while I did NOT fill each square to the top, I did fill them a little bit over 1/2 full. That was apparently too much, as some of the brownie batter poofed up over the pan itself. The brownie squares didn't pop out easily, but the silicone made it easier to push them out from the bottom--but some of the brownie "corners" remained in some of the squares. On the good side, the pan cleaned up really well--but that could be because I didn't use any Pam spray on it. All in all, to me, it's more trouble than it's worth!

When we moved 7, 8years ago, i took the opportunity to thin out the toys. The original owner, a single mother, put in a downstairs back room baking kitchen for extra income. We use it as a project room and pantry so i still have all the toys but none of it is upstairs in the main kitchen. It has been nice to just have the basics and my favorites. No appliances like a toaster, microwave, or any counter clutter. Wanted to go back to the basics of chopping by hand, cooking fresh and rustic. No plastics, glass fridge storage pyrex, etc. Oh, sure, it all finds its way back up every once in a while but i do a 'sweep' once a month or so and back it goes. My drawers are no longer junky and stuffed. My favorite things i remember when i moved... -all fresh new spices, one set was a gift -treated myself to good cooking oils and vinegars -2 new big cutting boards,(even though i have a dozen misc ones) -restaurant quality water kettle and coffee grinder -fresh new pot holders and kitchen towels. I've always had good knives and cookware, cast iron all sizes and enameled cast iron, all sizes. No longer use non-stick anything. 2 appliances most used and loved that have easy accessed under counter storage... Breville juicer and Blendtec blender. So worth the high cost for quality. I never wanted a kitchen aid since i don't bake but found one at a yard sale last year for 15$. Finding many uses for it now that i have one. (it had a loose screw in the housing that made it run with a gruff rumble, brand new and fixed with-in minutes of bringing it home) -yard sales are still a favorite way to add something 'new' without the sticker shock. Like triciae, i always have something collected from years of traveling like a pot or bowl with something fresh from the garden or a vase with flowers from the yard. A few weeks ago it was sunflowers...last week it was a leggy purple cabbage and chives, this past weekend i treated myself to a small rosemary tree.

Good for you Bobby!!!

That's the blender that I have been coveting--but don't need. I am a fan of Breville appliances. I don't think you will be disappointed.

What a great blender! I have a Breville espresso machine which is great. I also want the Breville panini maker, but it is hard to find.
Breville makes a great product.

We just got their Smart Oven toaster oven a couple of weeks ago. I'm liking it a lot so far. I think I'll be using it instead of the big oven this summer whenever I can. Not cheap, but obviously very well made. I was getting tired of throwing out dead toasters.

That blender looks wonderful. Enjoy playing with it!

Nice looking blender! We have a Breville juicer and it's a great appliance. I would buy another Breville appliance without question.

Congratulations Bobby. Breville makes some really good appliances. I bought one of their blenders about 6 years ago. It was a great appliance. I would still have it if Kitchenaid hadn't given me their pro blender as a gift, related to some problems I had with another of their appliances. I gave the Breville to Matthew and it is still working fine.

Congratulations, Bobby, aren't new kitchen toys fun?

I still am using a blender I got for a wedding present in 1974, LOL, and I've used it about twice a year but Ashley uses it a lot for making smoothies. It's an Oster, and it seems like it'll last forever, maybe I'll give it to Ashley when she finally leaves home!

When/if I'm in the market for a blender, I'll definitely check out the Breville, so thanks!

Oh, and Bobby, I finally broke down and got a new vacumn. Well, actually, Elery got disgusted with my cheap 10+ year old Hoover with the small container that had to be emptied every time I vacumned one room. His son used to work at a vacumn repair place, so he told his Dad to buy a Panasonic. He did and it works great and the owner tossed in a bunch of "tools" for free because he really liked Chris when he worked there. I just knew you'd want to know....:-)

Thanks for confirming that Brevilles are good. I think so too, but I've only had it for 2 days :o) It looks so good beside the stainless steel microwave! I have a friend with a Vita-mix, so I had pretty high standards for a blender as I do with any appliance. I can't wait to bring my Breville over and do a comparison with the Vitamix... I'll post a video of it here when we do it.

Annie, yes, they are fun, and of course you were right... I always want to know vacuum updates. Panasonic is a great brand... they are the best value for money as far as vacuums are concerned. Very durable and preform well. Their best machines are beltless, but use a bag. Many of the ones that aren't beltless have a metal bottom plate and roller brush which makes them just glide across the floor. Lots of times Panasonics will come with an extra long hose (30 feet?) that is really helpful, because the on board one can be short. Many of them also have a quick draw wand that can be detached in an instant for quickly snatching a cobweb or doing edges. Congratulations!

Just be glad you didn't get a Kirby!
