Does ceiling/attic insulation increase A/C cost?

An old-timer in Alabama once told me that the reason older Southern homes were not well-insulated was that it caused them to hold the heat inside during the night, keeping the interior warmer than the outside temperature. Without insulation, the house could dissipate heat through the ceilings/attic and thus cool off quicker.

If that is so (and I can't see why not), then wouldn't increasing attic/ceiling insulation in modern homes (as we're all told to do), be expected to increase the costs of the A/C?

I lived in several modern homes in Florida, and each had loads of insulation above the ceilings. Given that I ran the A/C 90% of the year, and the heat only 10% of the year, wasn't I losing money by keeping the insulation in place?

Am I missing something here?
