Replacing a Thermostat Wiring ?

danmen

Please help a rookie out here.

I have a very old Honeywell Mercury Round Thermostat.

There are 5 connections, all with Wires going to them

(This is a one furnace, 1 a/c system)

G, Y, W, Rc, Rh are the labels on my current system, they each have one wire going to them. There is a very odd single white wire that seems to connect the Rc & Rh to each other (in addition to the Red Rc and Blue Rh Wires). What is this wire for and will I need to use it when I replace my thermostat with a new digital one? Also any idea if the 5 + wire setup I have will supply power to a digital thermostat, or will I need to get a battery powered unit?
