Where do you keep your cooking utensils?

Currently we keep all of our wooden spoons, tongs, and spatulas in a crock next to the stove. Are there any alternatives or clever ideas? Husband likes to keep everything out and within reach. He claims he "needs" all 25 out at the same time.

I keep a big crock next to the range for quick reach utensils. The ones I don't use frequently are kept in a drawer on the other side of the cabinet run (no bigger drawers closer to range). I tried to go without the crock and keep everything in the drawer to keep clutter minimal but found it more convenient to have spatulas, etc. right there at all times.

I go through the drawer every 1.5 years to get rid of things I don't use. This is one drawer that can get full quick.

My new wall rack just arrived from Lee Valley. They have the best price of any company that makes them and it is very heavy duty stainless steel. Now I have to get DH to help install it behind the cooktop. I am so excited to get all the stuff out of the crocks that they are currently occupying. Since my hood vent works so well I don't anticipate the clean up of the utensils to be bad at all. I will post pics and reports as I use this new toy. c

I would have dearly loved to put in a central vac system when we did the original buy/gut/remodel. But alas, we ran out of money and in the interim two decades there are so many other things that take precedence - like a new roof, painting the house, replacing dead appliances, updating the kitchen and bathrooms, solar panel install, and the latest, a master bedrm remodel (which is a full one-quarter of our modest 2bd cottage). But when I did the original redesigned layout for this house 25 yrs ago, I put in every bit of storage I could - both built-in and freestanding. But of course, it's never enough [smile]. Like many here I was frustrated having to lug the vacuum up and down stairs (it's heavy!) and didn't really have any place convenient for it. I recently bought the Hoover Windtunnel Cordless and am in love with it. We no longer have pets and so this battery-powered vacuum works great for a quick, easy cleaning on both our HW floors and Oriental rugs. About 3 yrs ago we had a carpenter install a double custom cabinet on our small back porch, and specified one-third of it to comfortably fit any full-size upright or cannister. It's downstairs and will be used for the vacuum for the MBR suite. There are hooks for hoses. Bags/filters go in the cabinet next to it, which has floor to ceiling 10" deep shelves for all my extra cleaning supplies, water filters, boxes of garbage bags, DW detergent and rinse aid, etc. A Swiffer mop and hand duster, plus refills, also fit into this double closet. On the main floor we have 4 small and one large closet. The large closet and one small closet are extra deep. The upstairs vacuum, which will probably be a Sanitaire, will go in the large closet in the front/spare bedroom, which is convenient to all the rooms since each floor is only 860 sq. ft. total. We recently reorganized most of our closets and there's plenty of room for it and all the attachments. The small extra deep closet now holds extra kitchen pantry items (non-food), like the 24 rolls of paper towel refills and the stack of brown paper grocery bags we use for recycling compostables. I have a small cordless hand vacuum from Black & Decker that I've been very happy with. Surprising amount of suction and so much less fuss than a corded hand vacuum. I just tried one of the lower-end Shark electric brooms and it's useless. The B&D actually has more suction and is less trouble to use, which surprised me. I need a wall holder for the B&D, though. Haven't hit the stores yet to find one. In a pinch I can hide it in a wastebasket, LOL. Despite the modest size of the house, because we originally had to do foundation work, we were able to add a substantial laundry/utility room next to the one-car inner garage. I was not able to fit in a laundry sink, but there is a full 12x18 room just for storage, separate from the furnace/WH/W&D. We fitted it up with steel storage units, both closed and open. Luggage, wine, canned/dry food, extra linens and rugs, paint/hardware supplies, boxes of books - pretty much anything that needs a home except for garden stuff - can all fit in here. The ShopVac, for instance, is here, along with free-standing closet rods for when my DH does the laundry (what a sweetie!) There's also a storage shed on the property, which is one of my future projects! We moved a bunch of older storage organizers out there, so it's functional but not very attractive. It's about the same size as the indoor utility room, 12x18. Even though the size of the house is modest, the storage capacity is exceptional (we also have an attic we added for even more storage, but it requires a ladder for access). It just took us a while to gather the $$$ to finish it off the way we wanted.

We keep ours in a 12" wide two level pull out cabinet next to the rangetop. The most used bottles (e.g. olive oil) are at the very front so when I need to grab them, I open the door and grab them without pulling out the shelf. The taller bottles are on the bottom shelf so we don't have to bend much to reach them. The lower sides of a pull out make it easy to see enough of the bottle and label to easily identify the bottle I want. With a 24" wide drawer, it probably won't be filled with tall bottles, but will be a mix of short and tall ones. So one will have to bend more to get the short bottles. Also, it may be harder to tell which bottle is which in a deep drawer - that of course depends on how distinctive the bottles are when viewed from above and if you remember which is which. There are also pullouts available where the shelves attach to a door and pull out with them, but for us, I feel it is easier to not have to reach under the upper shelf to reach things on the bottom shelf or bend to see the things on the bottom shelf. We have a rangetop. Heat isn't great for oils and other flavoring agents so this may be better for a rangetop or cooktop than next to the oven of a range.

Trash - where do you keep yours and do you like it?

We also have much more recycles than trash. So I need a larger bin for recycle, and a small one for trash. I like the idea of keeping the trash smaller because it will get emptied more often too. I want to keep the pull out narrow so not to give up much cabinet space. So the trick is to find 2 trash can that are narrow, and together take up about 24" depth. The double bins I saw on Rev-a-shelf were all at least 12 - 15" wide, and much less than 24" deep. Also they are much shorter than under counter height, so not an efficient use of space. The photo from Judydel looks closest to what I want. What other brands should I look at? We also started composting recently. Right now I just use an old bread bag to collect stuff during the day, and then dump it in the compost bin after dinner clean-up. My BFF was composting years before it was fashionable. She didn't even have a disposal. She keep a small pretty ceramic pot w/lid on her counter next to the sink. She lined it with a bread bag, and collected her veggie scraps there. Every other day she would dump the contents into the compost pile. So I plan on getting a "compost pot" for my counter too.

I have a covered garbage pail under the sink for garbage bin garbage, and take it out and kick it around the kitchen when it's needed (pretty much like you said). I have a trash pullout with one bin for deposits (bottles and cans) and one for the bin (jars, paper and plastic). Plant matter compostables go in reused produce bags to be taken down to the city green bin. We don't have garbage composting. I don't refrigerate my house (A/C if on at all is set very high), and don't even like putting meat waste and really yucky things in the city mixed garbage bin, which gets a lot of afternoon sun. Phew! Though I'd do it if it were going for composting. That would be my big concern in the kitchen though: The bins are outside and downstairs and the veg waste is bad enough at times if no one wants to carry it down. What I'd want for it is well covered, probably with one of those charcoal filters or something, if it couldn't be carried right out immediately. I keep thinking of maggots. It just takes a single fly... I actually think if you have nothing else that you want to put under the sink, if you don't have plumbing in the way (inspector forced it under mine), you might fit all four bins but they might be small. And you certainly could do garbage and city compost with covers, and the rest next to it. I have recycling bins in every room so that it doesn't all accumulate in the kitchen. Considering how your city is diverting so much from waste water processing into high heat compost, I wonder if the house of the future will have a garbage room. Maybe it'll even have a built in composter appliance, so that all the city would pick up would be recycling (plastics, glass, metal) and home processed compost for a final run through to purify it in the city plant. Hm... Goopy plastic wrappers. That future needs a compostable wrapper that works as well as ordinary plastic for preserving freshness so as not to waste water. They've made great strides with cornstarch. My experience? I have had my pail (Rubbermaid) since I moved into off campus housing decades ago. It's a great pail which holds a week's garbage, because there's just so little garbage nowadays. There would be a lot less without paper napkins and towels. The other bins are standard size and could be twice as big. If your pick-up bins are right out the door, it doesn't matter, but if you don't like emptying them twice a day, or whatever, go for the biggest bins you can fit, especially for stuff that doesn't stink.

I have a crock next to the range, but I need to whittle it down because they keep scratching the wall and once I have a backsplash (well, a tile one) that will be an issue. The crock I have is plain white and pretty large. It has a bunch of All Clad tools plus numerous wood spoons and spatulas. I have a set of the All Clad rails, but I don't want to put holes in the wall.

Thanks for the link. I did a search but for some reason it seems I never put in the right words or something. I was wondering about the hanging systems. I think they look nice but hubby could never pare down his tools to just five or six. The whisk and wooden spoon issue is a running joke in our family. He claims he uses them all.

My Mom is trying for less clutter so she went with 2 of these, 1 in the top drawer by the stove and another by her baking area. She thinks she might need another one.

I love the idea of having a rack behind the cooktop with utensils on it and I think they look terrific and would be convenient, but what keeps it from getting spattered with grease, etc?

Mine are in an old cookie jar. Every little while I cull the utensils I don't use. Hopefully, a rack behind the cooktop will work if the number of utensils gets down to a reasonable amount. Keeping only the ones used frequently will keep them clean, too.

C-congrats on the new rack. Do post pics once it's up.

We keep our cooking utensils in a drawer by the range. I was thinking of getting a crock for the most used ones, though. We had lived without countertops for several months because I was gripped by indecision and DH had gotten used to reaching into the drawer from the top and has been grumbling about having to pull on the drawer to access a spatula.

OT, did you end up selling the white kitchen house?

In the drawer below my gas cooktop. My cabinet guy told me this was possible, luckily, as I'd never have thought to ask on my own. This drawer is perfect for holding my cooking utensils right where I need them.

I have stuff in drawers too...beneath cooktop as well as in baking center. The Lee Valley rod is 3 ft long and I got 20 hooks ! Nope no 5-6 utensils for me. I am going to get them all up there and then see how it does and cull them after that LOL ! Keep you posted. c

your DH sounds like one of my sisters (altho i have quite a few utensils myself). she uses multiple crocks: one for the wooden spoons, one for the spatulas (bottle scraper kind, not pancake flippers), and one for 'other' (pancake flippers, ladles, and assorted tongs). sorting items like that does make it easier to get what you want and is more aesthetically pleasing too--all wood, light colors, and all black and 'silver' in the respective crocks.

My counter is Minas soapstone. It is very dark grey/black in tone with white veining. It pleases me :)

We've got a big utensil rack (8 hooks) and a ss crock. We did 2 utensil racks and use one for pans, but you could do 2 and use both for utensils. I love having mine right by the stove and not having to open a drawer to get them.

Anita, the counter is bee-u-tee-ful! I like the way you made use of the space under the cooktop too. (I looked more carefully now that I'm on the monitor that's more than twice as big as the little laptop and can see better what was done--cool.)
