One of the things we like most about our new kitchen is the pullout for trash and recycling in the island. It fits 2 cans perfectly and is so much more convenient compared to where it sat in the old kitchen.

Our new kitchen will have a pull out with 2 cans and will be next to the cooktop and perpendicular to the sink. We currently have a small can under our sink and it is a pain because if someone is in front of the sink they have to move to throw the trash away and stuff is always falling behind since you have to bend over to toss it in the bin.

Reading from this forum helped me gain a lot of understanding about our needs. Since the condo is in a highrise with a trash chute, we decided to minimize our garbage can. Every second day one of us takes down the hall a baggie with stuff to toss, about one cup worth, and opens the garbage chute, tosses the firmly tied bag and hears it go down. For ten years previously, we held onto our garbage until it stunk, because our garbage can was "that" size.

We keep plastics and paper for recycling for a week or more.

The reno is underway still. The actual size of our garbage can is still to be determined. We are experimenting with different containers. It's often just an open bag. Talk about minimal. : - )

I'm not in love with trash pullouts. I love my old Rubbermaid covered pail because I can kick it around the kitchen to the place I want it. There was "filler" space by the sink anyway between all the things that had to be there that was just about 18". I didn't really need another drawer stack and when the cabinetmaker drew it as a trash pullout, I went along with it. It's a "must have" of modern kitchens even though I expect never to sell and wouldn't do it for resale. Just one of those "ought to" things. I figured it would be fine for recycling.

I have a recycling bin in every room (pretty trash baskets of a particular type so that they're easily recognizable as recycling). Still, it turns out we do a lot of recycling in the kitchen, and it's very handy to have it right there by the cleanup sink, especially since certain things need to be rinsed. The pullout has two bins, so one is for the city pickup and the other is for items that have a cash back deposit value.

My Rubbermaid bin fits under the sink, and is easy to pull out of the cupbard when I need it. Like you, I have very little garbage.

Compostables are kept in a bag on the counter because that will be a constant reminder to take them downstairs to the bin.

This works great. I love not having to look at the recycling, and it's convenient where it is. If I have some little piece of trash to throw away it's easy enough to tuck it in the pail under the sink. And it can be where I want it if I don't want it where it is. The only think I'm unsure of is the compost. Other than bagging it and putting it in the fridge, I don't have a way of not having to take it outside right away. But I don't have anywhere good to put a bucket either.

I can't help you out, but I am also hoping that a smaller trash will be just fine. I just changed my layout that had a 2 container trash pull out in the island to a single that will go under the sink. I am going to use a trash compactor for recyclables since that is always what we have so much of...

We have a large kitchen, so we have two trash cans. One is a Simple Human step can located midway between the stove and our garden sink. The other is smaller and it's located at our island pullout. It's a double trash pull out actually, so one of the stainless cans is used for compost and the other is used for trash. We keep a big recycling bin under our big sink.

I would really like to hide it if possible, but I see the problems having it under the sink could bring. I just hate to take storage space for trash - when under the sink would have extra room for us. My mil has a little separate trash thing she bought at a craft show. Its a tip out trash that is concealed in a cabinet. Maybe we could do something like that if under the sink doesnt work out..

We also have the trash / recycling pullout which we love. It occured to me the other day if we did not need the second bin for recycling it would be nice to use it as a small kitchen hamper for dishtowels, microfiber cloths, napkins.

I have a square double sided stainless steel can. I didn't want to put my trash inside a cabinet so I used that space for pull out vegetable bins and put my trash can at the end of the cabinet row. Since it is square, it fits just perfectly.

My kitchen is not finished yet but I have a double trash drawer. I also plan on placing a small trash can under the sink that I can take out and move wherever it is needed.

I really dislike having a trash can under the sink and I don't like having one freestanding in the kitchen (it's too tempting to my DH & kids to treat it like a basketball hoop and the dogs can easily get into it!)

I love our 2-bin trash pullout...trash in front, recyclables in back. We actually recycle so much that we usually have to take the recyclables out more often than the trash!

Does anyone know of a "pullout" that opens when you step on a foot pedal? You could have the no-hands convenience of a foot pedal can, and the sleekness of a pullout.

I have my trashpullout on one side of the sink cabinet: it's an Ikeahack, using a 12" depth drawer. My compost and recycling is on the other side of the cabinet. There's one narrow basket of cleaning materials, and that's it. Because of the composting, there's no smell or gunk in the trash anyway, so I have no concerns about having it there.

I have the foot pedal, but not installed yet. Just realized its not on my punch list. Guess that's why!

I have two 50 Qt cans in an 18" ikea cabinet with a drawer over the top of the trash pullout. The drawer has extra trash bags and a clear plastic restaurant prep pan with a lid. You can take the lid on/off using only two fingers and the trash is under the prep counter.

So, the way it works is open the tall drawer a little way and throw out trash, further and drop recycling, open the interior pullout and wipe off or drop compost-ables into the prep pan which is quite near the bottom of the counter. Close the tall drawer and both levels close.

No, personally I'm not a big fan of trash. :)

But seriously, My only trash now is under the main sink. I hate it. Not only is it small, I'm often in the way when others need to use it. In my new design, I have plans for a double trash pullout in an easily accessible area (out of my work zone), and small trash under the sink for my work area.

Pullout bins to the right of each sink. Recycling goes directly into the garage bins, which are only a few steps away.

I know we're in the minority, but DH and I love having a trash compactor. We've had one in all three homes, we've owned, and when we did a complete kitchen remodel on our current home in 2003 we put a new trash compactor to the immediate left of the sink. It was designed for cabinet front, and it opens by a toe/foot thingy. It blends in really well with the other cabinets.

We must produce more trash than other people, or maybe we just hate emptying the trash more, but I love being able to continue putting in more trash and smashing it down, over and over, long after we would've had to empty a trash can of the same size several times.

Our kitchen is pretty long and we decided to do two pullouts with two medium sized bins in them. Originally the front of each was to be trash and the back to be either mixed paper or plastics and cans because our then garbage company required them to be separated. A few months ago, our garbage company changed to one that has recycling and composting, so we keep composting in a closed rubbermaid container on the counter for frequent emptying and the back of the pullouts are for recyclables. We just emptied them last night and once again the recycling is two full containers to one plus garbage.

One is located to the right of the sink and one is located two cabinets to the right of our prep sink.

One of the few things I liked about our previous kitchen was that the trash was not located under the sink and we kept that feature in this kitchen. It does throw people a loop tho when they are placing something there for the first time tho! ;)

Before the remodel we had a big motion detecting trash can. I loved it, you walked up to it with your icky trash and it opened the lid for you. During the remodel I decided I didn't want to see the trash can anylonger and we went back to the under the sink can, at least it's on a rollout. It's ok. I suppose if we were replacing cabinets, I would have opted for the real pull out in a better location.

When we have a lot of people in the kitchen, I will grab the other can and take the top off and just have it at the end of the island. When all the kids are home it is just too many people for the dainty little can under the sink.

We also have much more recycles than trash. So I need a larger bin for recycle, and a small one for trash. I like the idea of keeping the trash smaller because it will get emptied more often too. I want to keep the pull out narrow so not to give up much cabinet space. So the trick is to find 2 trash can that are narrow, and together take up about 24" depth. The double bins I saw on Rev-a-shelf were all at least 12 - 15" wide, and much less than 24" deep. Also they are much shorter than under counter height, so not an efficient use of space. The photo from Judydel looks closest to what I want. What other brands should I look at? We also started composting recently. Right now I just use an old bread bag to collect stuff during the day, and then dump it in the compost bin after dinner clean-up. My BFF was composting years before it was fashionable. She didn't even have a disposal. She keep a small pretty ceramic pot w/lid on her counter next to the sink. She lined it with a bread bag, and collected her veggie scraps there. Every other day she would dump the contents into the compost pile. So I plan on getting a "compost pot" for my counter too.

I am definitely not going with a built in garbage can. Had one in last house and it was a pain to keep clean inside the cabinet. I also like to move it around with me based on the part of the kitchen I am working in. I'd rather use the cabinet space for other purposes.
I plan on hosting our sons' friends over the years (and extended family) and like a garbage that is not hidden. I hate when I have open all the cabinets in someone else's kitchen just to find the garbage. I like things to be easily found, which is why I also plan on a bunch of open shelves with cups, plates, bowls etc... so that casual guests can help themselves and feel comfortable.
