Under my sink I have a round bin that pulls out when I open the door, and I use it for organics that the city collects, veg scraps, meat, egg shells, that kind of stuff.

My kitchen is a peninsula, and along one side I have cargo bins in a 17.5" cabinet. There aren't side by side, but one in front of the other. One is for paper and recycling, and the other is for regular garbage, foil and the like.

The only downside is the bins take up valuable storage space. I actually got less storage space in the new kitchen. The upside is that the garbage is completely out of sight, and very easy to deal with. I line them with green garbage bags, which I just empty as needed.

Pitiful as it is, I really love my cargo bins!

It sounds like we have a set up similar to sugar maple's for our compost. I've been very happy with the set up but we're upgrading to a metal can. The hardware on this plastic one is flimsy and the pail falls off the part that holds it to the door.

We keep trash and paper recycling in a trash pull out next to our prep sink. We tend to collect recyclable plastics, cans and glass in or next to the prep sink and then rinse a bunch out at a time. We have a chute in the mudroom that goes into the basement where we throw cans, cardboard, plastics and foil. Once a week dh separates it and brings it to the transfer station. We keep 2 boxes in a cabinet in our mudroom--one for recyclable glass and one for returnable glass bottles. There is a shelf in the same cabinet on which we accumulate newspapers.

The compost container is under our main sink which is closest to where I actually prep. Dh is going to make a slide out shelf under the "prep" sink---it will have a hole in which a small plastic bucket will sit---handy for the scraps that accumulate at that sink (our dw is located at this sink.)

I have, or shall I say had, a nice ceramic compost crock on my counter that I think I bought at garden supply or some other online gardening store (do a search compost crock or pail.) The top sealed with a plastic ring, had holes in it and an area for a small charcoal filter, so it did not smell or have fruit flies. It also had a handle to carry it out to the compost in the back yard. I have tried to buy another, but most I find don't have a seal on the lid or air holes or both... now I am back after searching for composts again :) The point of the crock is to keep in where I am working, versus putting it in a bowl, then transferring to a pail under the sink. It can also look nice on the counter, depending on style. It is wonderful that your community collects non-veg compost. I just have to trash mine for now, or try to feed to the picky kitty.

I will be keeping my recyclables in a pull out with two bins. The apartment we rented while renovating had one and I am converted. Formally I kept them in paper bags in a closet and they were always wet and falling out everywhere. We have one bin for paper, one for other, the way it must be sorted for collection.

I will keep my trash in a stand up simplehuman butterfly can that will *hopefully* fit under the overhang of the side of my island.

I have a covered garbage pail under the sink for garbage bin garbage, and take it out and kick it around the kitchen when it's needed (pretty much like you said). I have a trash pullout with one bin for deposits (bottles and cans) and one for the bin (jars, paper and plastic). Plant matter compostables go in reused produce bags to be taken down to the city green bin. We don't have garbage composting.

I don't refrigerate my house (A/C if on at all is set very high), and don't even like putting meat waste and really yucky things in the city mixed garbage bin, which gets a lot of afternoon sun. Phew! Though I'd do it if it were going for composting. That would be my big concern in the kitchen though: The bins are outside and downstairs and the veg waste is bad enough at times if no one wants to carry it down. What I'd want for it is well covered, probably with one of those charcoal filters or something, if it couldn't be carried right out immediately. I keep thinking of maggots. It just takes a single fly...

I actually think if you have nothing else that you want to put under the sink, if you don't have plumbing in the way (inspector forced it under mine), you might fit all four bins but they might be small. And you certainly could do garbage and city compost with covers, and the rest next to it.

I have recycling bins in every room so that it doesn't all accumulate in the kitchen.

Considering how your city is diverting so much from waste water processing into high heat compost, I wonder if the house of the future will have a garbage room. Maybe it'll even have a built in composter appliance, so that all the city would pick up would be recycling (plastics, glass, metal) and home processed compost for a final run through to purify it in the city plant.

Hm... Goopy plastic wrappers. That future needs a compostable wrapper that works as well as ordinary plastic for preserving freshness so as not to waste water. They've made great strides with cornstarch.

My experience? I have had my pail (Rubbermaid) since I moved into off campus housing decades ago. It's a great pail which holds a week's garbage, because there's just so little garbage nowadays. There would be a lot less without paper napkins and towels. The other bins are standard size and could be twice as big. If your pick-up bins are right out the door, it doesn't matter, but if you don't like emptying them twice a day, or whatever, go for the biggest bins you can fit, especially for stuff that doesn't stink.

We have exactly the same collections: recycling, compost for the yard (fruits/veggies/eggs/etc.), city green waste (meats/fish/food paper/any other food waste the raccoons might like), and trash.

Right now, we have a bag on the floor for recycling, a SimpleHuman can that we like quite a lot for real trash but that is increasingly too big, and then for green waste and compost we grab random containers (milk cartons, bags) and try to take them out every other day or so. (No hot weather here, so easier on that front.)

The new kitchen will have a pullout door on one side under the sink (no room anywhere else, and no disposal so it will be roomy down there!) that will have a small bin for trash and a bin for recycling. Then we'll probably get a little counter bin for compost; still undecided on what to do for city green waste, which is the majority of our trash (although I guess recycling is the bulkiest!) Possibly just another counter bin, or possibly a small step can. (We have one that we don't use, but that takes 3-gallon compostable bags.)

I also recently was at a friend's where they were using the SimpleHuman two-container bins, which I think are intended for trash and recycling, for compost and green waste instead. Something like that might work; I know various companies make version of those for pullouts...

Can the trash and recycling pull-out (not compost) go beside the stove?
