that seems too low and deep, doesn't it? I have a 24inch drawer stack left of my range, filled with pots/pans, ect. Oils and other assorted cooking stuff is in and upper to the left of the range.

I like my oils and vinegars in the lowest shelf of the upper as well. Unless you have a top drawer or a pull out, I don't think that your proposed storage sounds very convenient. You will be doing a lot of bending down to retrieve things.

We use Fustini's oil & vinegar (MANY flavors), so we have probably 20-25 bottles. Mine are on the top shelf of the lazy susan corner cabinet.

I'm not sure where they are going in the new house, but in the last one, we kept them on the top shelf of the lower lazy susan corner cabinet. It was the style where the door was attached to the shelves, so it spun inside the cabinet, therefore I could have the oils easily accessible while cooking if you just kept it "open". I set them inside of plastic containers so they wouldn't fall down. Separated the oils in one, vinegars in another, honey (yes, what do you expect from a beekeeper's wife?) in another. Made cleaning up from any residue easier too because you just have to pull out the container and wash it.

I also keep the oil on the lowest shelf of the upper to the right of the stove. Vinegars go to the next highest shelf of the cabinet to the left. I don't use vinegar all that often, so it hangs out with the soy and terriyaki sauces and the Kitchen Bouquet.

When we moved into this house last fall, I noticed these two places on either side of the hood.
Tried to open them and decided they didn't open. The cabinets were stained very dark oak and filthy.
A friend came over one day and said don't these open? She pulled really hard and voila they did open. They were just stuck with built up grease haha So, that is where I now keep my oils, vinegars etc.

My oils and vinegars are in a narrow, 3-shelf (top shallow, middle medium, bottom tall) pullout under my prep area, which is a quick step-pivot from the stove behind. Tall bottles go on the bottom shelf, which pulls out by itself with the door, and I don't have to lean much at all to grab them. Stuff on the middle shelf is all right there for me. I have a lot of vingars and other bottled ingredients, and they're visible from the side and easy to grab because it is a pullout. Very available as I throw things together. Other options might be as good, but I don't think I could improve on it.

Mine are on a lazy Susan on the bottom shelf of the upper to the right of my cooktop with a couple lined up to the side as the collection will expand to fill the space available. ;)

Thanks, everyone! I agree that keeping ours in the bottom drawer is probably not the most efficient. I like the idea of keeping them in an upper to the right or left of the range. My only concern with that is being able to see all of them...without having to move 5 different oils before getting to the one I want. Maybe I'm just being fussy! For those of you that keep them in an upper, is that a concern for you?

I keep oil and vinegar in some hand made pottery designed for that purpose. The larger containers are in the pantry.

We have two locations: The big bottles are in a dark, inconvenient pantry.

The ones I use while cooking are right on the counter where I can grab them. They get refilled from the big ones as needed.

So it boils down to this: How often do you use them? The things you use the most should be as close as possible to the point of use.

Lindsay - I have all my frequently used flavorings on plastic lazy susans on the lower two shelves of the 36" cabinet next to the range so I can spin and grab. Short stuff on the outside, tall things in the middle, labels facing out ... and often a label on the neck of the jar so I can read it easier.

Bulk stock and seldom used things are in plastic bins on the higher shelves so I can pull a bunch out and grab what I need.

Our upper to the right of the range is oils, with olive oil in front and canola behind, the only kinds we use regularly. The upper to the left has vinegars in front and fancier oils and vinegars behind. The front rows of the uppers are plenty for things we use all the time.

If you need to be able to see more than 5 or 6 bottles very easily, maybe you would like one of those lower pull-outs that are very skinny that some people keep their oils and vinegars in.

top drawer to the right of my range. drawers are two stack, 11" deep, and (i think) 30" wide. i'll need to take pics of all my inserts, but the left side 1/3 of the drawer is full depth and rest is two tiered.

I guess I'm the weirdo... we have them in the lower cabinet to the right of the stove. (No drawer in this cabinet.) This is convenient enough for me.

I think there's a whole philosophy and even a glossy magazine too for people who live simple lives, Lizzie. :)

Lindsay, if you go with a handy upper shelf, the advice to plan for keeping a relatively few most-used items there and the rest elsewhere is good. I have a 12" deep wall pantry, and bottles can easily run 5 deep, and potentially even more (those little specialty sauce bottles come to mind). A bunch run tall and a bunch are shorter, too, and you might end up putting tall ones elsewhere so the next shelf up could be lower.

I also keep my oils and vinegars in the uppers on either side of the cooktop. Both cupboards have racks on the inside of the doors for storing spices, so the shelves in the cabinet aren't that deep. The oils and vinegars are basically two-deep in the cupboard, so it's easy to see them all. It's very convenient to have all the seasonings at my fingertips when cooking.

I keep my EVOO on the counter as I use it so frequently...right there with the kosher salt and the pepper grinder.

The rest of the oils and vinegars are on the lower shelf of the lazy susan.

Mine are in a bin in a drawer, middle drawer to the right of the cooktop. Top drawer is too shallow and has all my spices, I would find the bottom drawer too inconvenient - too far out of the way requiring bending to get them out. My drawer stack has a shallow drawer on top, then two equal height pot drawers middle and bottom.

I started with mine on the lower shelf of the upper to the right of the cooktop but found that because of the height needed for some of the oil/vinegar bottles it made my next shelf too difficult to reach which really limited what I could use that upper for. I'm much happier with them in the drawer, it definitely allows my kitchen to function better. And I find putting them all in a bin makes them less likely to leave oily rings on my drawer and makes it handy to grab them all out while I'm using them/put them all away when the cooking is done.

We keep ours in a 12" wide two level pull out cabinet next to the rangetop. The most used bottles (e.g. olive oil) are at the very front so when I need to grab them, I open the door and grab them without pulling out the shelf.

The taller bottles are on the bottom shelf so we don't have to bend much to reach them. The lower sides of a pull out make it easy to see enough of the bottle and label to easily identify the bottle I want.

With a 24" wide drawer, it probably won't be filled with tall bottles, but will be a mix of short and tall ones. So one will have to bend more to get the short bottles. Also, it may be harder to tell which bottle is which in a deep drawer - that of course depends on how distinctive the bottles are when viewed from above and if you remember which is which.

There are also pullouts available where the shelves attach to a door and pull out with them, but for us, I feel it is easier to not have to reach under the upper shelf to reach things on the bottom shelf or bend to see the things on the bottom shelf.

We have a rangetop. Heat isn't great for oils and other flavoring agents so this may be better for a rangetop or cooktop than next to the oven of a range.

Good for you. One more carefully considered step taken.

For others, I do have one of those less-desirable pullouts Cloud Swift mentions with shelf attached to the door, but in our case it's mercifully only the bottom shelf. Then you pull out the middle shelf and top tray separately. I wasn't crazy about the idea at all but was doing Ikea and went with it because my options for filling that 12" were limited, to put it mildly. So it was really nice to find it worked well after all. I'd recommend anyone choosing between one and two shelves attached to the door to definitely go for just one for the reason she said. Even though the trays are so narrow, I often label lids of some bottles with a marker so I can eyeball from above and grab them out of the middle.

Otherwise, how it holds and displays the bottles is really a lot like her pullouts in her picture (except a big gallon bottle of peanut oil sits right smack at the front of my lower shelf). It also has a shallow tray on the top that limits the second shelf to the shorter bottles but turned out to be handy after all for little items like anchovy paste and dishes holding garlic and shallots.

I have something similar to cloud_swift's located just left of my range. I adjusted the upper pullout to accommodate taller bottles so I wouldn't be bending over. In my previous kitchens, I've stored them in both a base cabinet and in an upper and frequently found myself rummaging thru them to find one that got hidden to the back. This works much better for me. In addition, being 5'2" tall, I much prefer reaching down and having ALL of my oils/vinegars/condiments readily available to grab. I also like being able to visualize them (even if it's the tops of them) all at once.

Like what others have written, I keep my 2 cruets of oils (canola and olive) along with my salt and pepper on my counter since they get multiple use thruout the day.

Rosie... thanks to you, I now know what I can keep on my bottom shallower pull-out as I do not have that many short bottles. I think a tray or shallow dish for root vegetables would work out great, keep them accessible and out of sight!
