Believe it or not, i wash sleeping bags and comforters in my tiny Bosch Axxis. The front loaders can hold a lot more than you think. I did a demo when I bought the Bosch and they had 17 towels stitched together at the store. Me and my friend, who ended up buying the same machine, were shoving those towels in there and could not believe it. This was a while ago (5 years ago) and people didn't think the tiny 23" X 23"X 33" machine would hold more than a towel. It can wash comforters AND sleeping bags. Even a Northface polyfill one, which are notorious for not getting wet. Go to an appliance store and start shoving a sleeping bag or a comforter in the washers and see what fits. Seriously. It sounds crazy but I'm so happy I did. I was switching from a super capacity top loader, so I could wash anything in it. I wanted to make sure I wasn't getting stuck with a tiny little machine that could only wash hand towels. I think Snyder Diamond and other high end places even have things like the towel demo sometimes. It's good to know where you are going to dump some serious cash!!

OK, I can help here. The Miele 12XX series is the last of the 220V true-horizontal axis, 6K machines, right? (I ask because I have earlier, smaller, 5K 19XX version machines.) To the OP: don't be put off by the apparently small size of the machine compared to your Neptune. True horizontals can be loaded more fully and still perform pefectly for most items. (Loading for all-permanent press/no iron loads should be less, though, not for cleaning reasons, but for anti-wrinkling properties.) The first thing to do is weigh your current loads, dry. If they are 13 lbs or less for mixed general laundry, then you'll be just fine with the smaller-sized machine. I have the 5 kilo (11 lb) Miele and if I can get it in my machine and close the door, the load will work just fine. This is only true of horizontal axis machines, not the more common tilted axis machines that abound today. Regarding king comforters/ coverlets: this depends more on the type of fill (down is more compressible than fiber-fill) than on the size. In my 5 K machines I can wash my full and queen down comforters, but only twin or light synthetic comforters. The down is harder to stuff in, and seems like the bigger volume, but it melts down more when wet, so it works fine. If the seller is willing to have you try the machine, with your comforter, that is a very good sign. To the poster who claimed that it is incorrect to fill the machine up to just under "what you can get in and still close the door": I disagree, I wash loads like that every day (in Asko and Miele machines) and have superb cleaning performance. I have little experience with the tilted axis machines but I agree that filling them like that would be a mistake. But for Miele and Asko true horizontals, it's just fine. For instance, yesterday I washed 2 cotton pillow cases, a white terry cotton bathmat and 35 white cotton men's size large T-shirts in the same load. It was a bit over the weight limit and required a little push to close the porthole door, but I knew from experience it would be OK and it was. I remember when I got my first F/L (dish-washer-sized) machine. I was sure it wouldn't work, but I was completely wrong. Regarding the 12xx series: that was the beginning of the change from more user-controlled, flexibly option-rich, cycle choices. My, earlier-vintage, machines were the most flexible, the 1200s a bit less so, and the even more recent machines even less so. This would not be a problem, I think, for most people except for those of us who were stuck on the old menu. It would be worth the time for the OP to think through the cycle choices (and discuss them with the seller, perhaps) to make sure the machine will meet her particular expectations. My only complaint about Mieles F/L is I can never find them for cheap on CL. L

We just realized we need a right hinged door. My current 12 y.o. Maytag Neptune is right hinged and I didnÂt realize until now that it is not common. So, we are now looking at the Electrolux Wave Touch. A lot more money but it will definitely be able to wash my comforter! We are looking at the Wave-Touch instead of the IQ because having steam in the dryer is important to me. We are also looking at the Turquoise Sky color  very different from the silver blue of the Samsung!

And the one washer I'm not interested in is a Maytag. I bought a GE top load washer a few weeks ago. Can't use a front load due to space...don't think I'd want one even if I could. It advertises "Use as Much Water as You Want"...Not! You can press the Deep Fill button to add 3 1/2 gallons at a time OR you can press and hold the Deep Fill button for 3 seconds and max it out. The only way that gives you enough water (press and hold) is if you're washing a medium size load. There is no way I can wash a king size comforter in there or for that matter, a large load of clothes. The only way this is going to work is to wash more and smaller loads. That will use more electricity and wear out the washer faster (sigh) and cause me more work. My husband suggested I just let the machine work the way the manufacturer intended for it to work. OK, I'll try it. Med size load of towels and undies. A few minutes after the load as been in wash cycle, I looked inside. Some items weren't even wet! It's like the difference in a person "washing off" or taking a bath. You just aren't going to get as clean "washing off". Old washer is still sitting in the garage. Seriously considering just having the drain issue fixed but that would only postpone the inevitable.
