Why are my Vidalia onions hot?

Does anyone know what causes that? I've taken back two bags of onions because they're too hot to eat without cooking them. I thought Vidalias were suppposed to be sweet and mild. I finally found some (milder ones) at one of my grocery stores, but the rest haven't been what I expect from a Vidalia onion. What's that about?
