American standard equipment, Is it good?

2850 sqf home in Chicago area, replacing 4 ton Tempstar system. The American standard quote:

1- Freedom 95 comfort 2 stage variable speed furnace AUH2C100A9V4VA

2- AllegianceÂ® 13 Air Conditioner (4 ton)13 SEER 4A7A3048

3- Cased coil 4Txcc049BCH3

10 yr parts and labor warranty.

all new wiring and lines and a thermostat controller are included.

For $6900

upgrade the air to 15 SEER 4A7A5048 will cost another $500

Any comments, is American Standard a good reliable system?

AmStd is solid equipment.

keep in mind, the furnace you are quoted is two stg vs the three stg MVC Carrier.

I would recommend upgrading to the 15 SEER Allegiance 15.

Correct thermostat would be Trane/AmStd 803 or identical Honeywell equivalent(HW makes Tanes stats).

You will also need a whole house filter cabinet.

What I have now is a 20x25x5 filter between the return and the furnace. Is this what you refer to as a whole house filter?
What is the difference between a 2 stage and a 3 stage furnace?
Can I still use my AprilAir humidifier with the new system?

Hey Nevada, Great advice! I never line my gardens with twine or use plastic of any kind. The only thing I use twine for in the garden is for something for my pole beans to grow up. At the end of the season, I just cut them off and run the whole works through my chipper. The sisal is pretty far along in the rotting and breaks up nicely for the compost pile. Hey Barbed, That's not a seal, it's a shield that protects the seal from being ruined by wrapped material. I think the theory is that the stuff will wrap between this shield and the first set of tines and not cause any problems. It was originally pressed on the last tine set but the the garbage was wrapped so tight it popped off. I think the twine got in because it was loose, the other side had no twine by the seal. Since it was plenty loose when I put it back on, I think it's been popped off several years. The welding shop spent 20 minutes to weld it and smooth the welds for a charge of 10 bucks. The BCS dealer said it's a 71 dollar part. Hey Ibpod, Records are also great when it comes to reselling a machine. Any yahoo can claim he did regular maintenance but if he can't cough up a paper trail it's only his word. Maintenance records can be faked just before a sale but fakes can be spotted and if the guy was too lazy to do the work, he'll pry be too lazy to fake the records. This guy said he did regular maintenance and look what I found. I'll bet you 10 dollars if I called him up and asked him how to check the gearbox oil he'd blank.

Is the price before or after the tax credit (post model numbers and I can verify the system does indeed qualify) of $1500? The ductwork is adding a fair amount to the cost to replace it all, along with relocation. If they're relocating the unit, might as well replace the lineset. It's not always necessary if reused properly and the correct size. American Standard is good equipment, same as Trane. If you use heat every once in a while, I'd say stay with a heat pump; electric strip heat alone can be costly. All things considered, I do think your quote is high by about a thousand if not more. 3.5 tons sounds like a lot for your living space despite your hot climate - did they run any calculations to ensure proper sizing? Probably not.

Hi, I'm in the midwest and have a 5100 sq ft home. I'm looking at replacing my 17 yo furnaces, 2 Carrier Weathermaker high efficiency , with electronic filtering system , (eletroair SST), two air conditioning units, one blown and one 4 years old (got 10 years out of the blown one) with a similar set up to above. Recommended by the dealer is 1 American standard 16, 2ton communicating heat pump with a Am ST. Freedom 95 60K btu, 3 stage furnace and Acculink 900 comfort controller... AND 1 Heritage 16, 3 ton communicating heat pump with Freedom 95, 80K btu, 3 stage furnace, both with the AccuClear air cleaner system. We could keep the 4 yo air conditioner for a while, and put in the extra heat pump later. We could keep the current air cleaner (the kids, who sleep near it downstairs say it cracks and pops a bit). I'm looking at getting another quote, and from the looks of it above Carrier would be the place to get another quote and opinion. The American standard dealer made a big deal about the communication between the furnace and heat pump, calling this "geothermal above ground, at 1/3 of the price". We probably could get a couple more years out of our furnace, but has needed repair a couple of times, and were told it could become a problem, which we'd like to avoid in the middle of winter. We did consider geothermal and priced that out last year, and just felt the retrofit wasn't worth the bother. A contractor friend recommended that future high efficiency furnaces would make the geothermal unnecessary, at least for retrofitting. Any opinions out there?

what are the Variable factors that determine SEER? But what about where the equipment is placed (in a hot attic) which is often toted on this board as a not so good idea. (Absent in AHRI criteria?) The line set is under sized? how does that effect efficiency? A long line set run 50 feet or more? (Absent in AHRI criteria?) The more line set used, the more refrigerant needed the harder that compressor runs to push it thru the system... twist turns and bends decrease efficiency further? (Absent in AHRI criteria?) Duct work design, insulation level of ducts, how long those runs are. Twist, turns and bends of that air increase system turbulence which correspondingly decrease efficiency? (Absent in AHRI criteria?) But that AHRI number is so important? Or is this just a gimmick? I'm gonna go with gimmick. It gives you 'some' information as to what certain equipment can achieve, but it leaves a lot to be desired if you're not addressing the 'whole design'. Addressing the 'whole design' costs more money... so the efficiency desire is often clouded by 'ding-ding' --- $MONEY$. Those that tout the AHRI numbers that didn't work after the job was done... will just use an excuse why your efficiency numbers don't look so good. They have a disclaimer, to fall back on. All manufacturer's have disclaimers in terms of efficiency ratings, ironically enough. (Note: I am not talking about new construction in this post, that is an entirely different subject.) Remember the shell shuffle game? Keep your eyes on the ball they said... yeah it's kinda like that.

yes, if you have an existing filter, it most likely can be re-used. Dealer most likely would have to size a new transition. Humidifier should be able to be re-used. It has a separate control?

two stg vs three stage is just that. different levels of heat output-two for the two stage and three for the three stage. The newest furnaces are the true high efficient modulating furnaces that can vary the output in as small as 1% increments between a 40% and 100% range of output. In other words you use what you need.

In the case of the AmStd furnace you are looking at, it has a 61 KBTU output on low, 95 KBTU on high.

I have to point this out. While I do like AmStd and Trane products, their evap coil and condenser combinations with a VS furnace have rather pitiful performance/eff numbers when compared to Carrier/Bryant. This is the truth. The numbers speak for themselves.

There are a total of 9 returns
2 returns are on the second floor (about 900 sqf)
7 returns on the first floor (about 1950 sqf)
So your first choice will be a Carrier/Bryant, and second choice will be AmStd and Trane.
I will consider this when I make a final decision.
