Make lemonade...

And when you forget to put the ground hazelnuts on top of the muffins, make hazelnut encrusted chicken the next day.

So what mistake have you made that turned fortutious?

Ha! Good one! Linda, when life hands me lemons I throw them at people from Iowa and hope they can add sugar to sweetem them up! ...okay ...just kidding...I don't really have an answer for this question. I don't make mistakes too often. And when I do I usually don't have a way to rectify the problem.

P.S. Isn't there a re-run of a great Howie-do-it show on tonight? :-)

Really haven't been peering into this one lately, but when I watered it today, I noticed it's all gone to hell. This plant is becoming less enjoyable by the day! Lol It looked like rust but then doesn't feel like rust -- it's all dried and toasty. Crackles and breaks. We have had some hot days but nothing as hot as some of the days it had to endure this summer prior to the repot. It almost looks like it's rootbound again but that's not possible, is it? It's barely been three months! It's on all of the leaves at least to some degree from mild to severe, except the newest leaves, and you'd think they would toast first if it's sunburn. I think perhaps it's burning because visible part of the seed is totally charred.... The soil was utterly dry when I watered today and it was probably watered about two days ago, I would guess. i think I shall chop it. What say you, gentlemen? I'm thinking right where those little leaves are below. I know you said to keep it tall if I want the trunk to thicken, and it's got a ways to go (but it has grown in nicely), but I am really hating all the affected leaves. The whole plant: This isn't where it grows--I just moved it in for the photo and in part shade. For what it's worth, there have been a few occasions where it was a little droopy on hot days and it perked right up with water by early evening. It was not droopy today, just dry soil. And it was 100 today. I officially live in Hades, Josh and Al!

No, but I should have boxed him up and sent him to George. He would have come up with a new dish. He came head to head with my dog and size-wise it was a pretty good match, but Rico kept biting him on the nose, so he kept backing away. I finally took the sidewalk broom and held Rico back till the possum could get away. After I found the cantaloupe remains I was sorry I was not beating the possum with that broom. Now each time Rico hears a frog jump, he thinks the possum is back and goes running over there. If I had everything that is dead cleared out of my garden it would sure look better out there, but when it is 109 during the day, I have learned to look away and just leave the ugly brown things standing. I'm like Dawn though, I really can't complain about production, it was good while it lasted. Most things produced all at once and then the heat came and they were done. I would have liked more broccoli in the freezer, and had hoped we would have a decent Fall for that, but I didn't even start any. I have peppers and eggplant producing. I let one melon patch die but have kept one going along with some winter squash that blooms, but doesn't seem to be setting fruit. I planted Zuchetta on one side of an arched cattle panel and a Seminole pumpkin on the other. The Zuchetta is over the top and was half way down before I re-directed it. I probably planted 10 Seminole seeds about the same time and I have one plant about 3 feet long. I think I saw a bud forming today. The Zuchetta has had dozens of male blooms and only 2 squash. I guess even the birds and bees think it is too hot. Oh yeah, I have a few black eyed peas, and some very hot chickens. As I have mentioned before, I am going to experiment with what I can grow in winter in low tunnels. I have been trying to keep a few things alive hoping rain would come, but we have had 19/100 of an inch in 30 days, and just over 6 inches in the last 90 days. That is just unreal for this area.

I sew little sacks out of cotton fabric and print the contents on cardstock. I use my greeting card program and print out the quarter fold cards so I have 4. I cut them apart and punch a hole in the top and tie it to the bag. FOXY

Oh YUM! That shrimp dish looks delish! I was just reading a recipe recently that called for preserved lemons. Thank you for posting the recipe. Unfortunately, my kitchen is in the process of being demolished so it'll be awhile before I can make them, but when I have my new kitchen, it just might be one of the 1st things I make...then the shrimp dish! Your son sounds like a very talented chef! Thanks again for sharing the recipes. alex, that tree is unbelievable! I'm getting a Meyers Lemon tree now!!

I was always told if Life handed you a lemon to suck it quick and get on with it. But lemonade works too.

I didn't 1/2 the madeline recipe. I wanted to reserve enough materials to do it over again, but really, the mixture was good. Just had to tweak the temperature and time.

P.S. Ann is closer. "When life gives you lemons, add salt and tequila" is the mantra.

...squeeze 'em and freeze 'em for the summer! Lemons are actually a winter crop, so when the hot weather comes around in August my Meyers aren't producing (they're still young yet, barely a decade old).

Of course, during the winter and spring I've got more lemons than even we can handle, so I'm always giving them away to friends and family.

One of our friends has a persimmon tree - same problem, everything gets ripe at once in October. I'd heard you can't freeze the pulp, but discovered that you can, at least for a couple of months' time, without a problem. I don't like persimmons myself, but because I had to use up several very ripe ones, invented a recipe for Ginger Persimmon Curd to top a delicate Meyer lemon cheesecake. Works great and is delicious!

Life handed me some organic lemons this weekend, and I made lemon curd for the first time. Not a salvage operation, but very scrumptious. Now I want to try a bunch of different flavors. Curds aweigh!

we've been down that road before too...LOL

He's 17 now..and soon...moving on to the next stage in his life...I HOPE!!!

There are two more "suprises" behind him. LOL

Well today was clean out the fridge...I made fried rice..

Some spicy breakfast sausage that was pre browned, couple cups of old rice, 2 baby leeks, handful of frozen peas and a giant organic farm fresh chicken egg..
Couple glugs of Tamari and a quick couple dashes of rice vinegar..

Delish meal for ME!!!

I think fried rice has to be one of the best "redo" of unused ingredients!

A shot of ole Jose works for me...lick, shoot, and suck if I remember right.LOL! It's been many years since I've done that for various reasons. LOL

Another fan of fried rice for leftovers.

What about that ice cream you find in the refigerator?? That has happened to me more than once...

No kids here....thank you very much!!

While visiting my MILs I started to make a double recipe of chocolate cake. I had the chocolate bars and butter melting in a pan when it was decided that only one cake would be needed. So, I made one cake recipe... but added all the butter and chocolate without thinking. I turned out to be the very best Double Chocolate Fudge Oatmeal Cake ever.
