I recall reading posts about the home you've purchased but I've forgotten the particulars.

I know it's BIG, it's old, was a B&B. Now I read you got it with all of the contents.

If you have a moment to spare I would love to hear how you found it and would enjoy seeing the pictures as it is now. Then, after you've put your signature mark on it I'd love to see those pics as well.

(I'm still drooling.)

I just got call that the money has been received and it will be ours officially by ten in the morning tomorrow :) We've been under contract for sixty days so it's a nice feeling to have it done!

Because it's "done" and the business is closed and the press is printing tomorrow (small town, anyone's dog pooping is front page news LOL) I can show the outside pic of the house:

It's called the James House and was built in 1889 by Francis Wilcox James as a gift for his wife who sadly died seven weeks after they moved in. Mr James stayed and raised his family in the home. He was a very forward thinking man...and the house reflects that. It's a queen anne, but considered a very modern queen anne during it's time. Less roof line changes than you normally see and it's much "squarer" than a traditional queen anne.

So how did this happen. Well since we were told a couple of years ago that our son's diagnosis would possibly mean we'd need to move him to another climate we have been searching for the perfect town to raise him in. We wanted a smaller town, but not so small there aren't good restaurants, organic and farmers markets, good seafood and meat available, great schools and a wine shop :) We also wanted golf and boating near by and we wanted a lifestyle that could involve walking most of the time verses always getting into a car to go anywhere. (We can walk to all but the golf courses on our list of wants). We wanted low crime and a diverse community both ethnically and gad what's the word...ohh culturally. Duluth MN and Port Townsend WA won as the top top towns for us. Both had one other issue that put them over the top...family in driving distance.

We were set on buying a home called the Hastings House. Pretty queen anne, big enough for what we want (we want to entertain, be available as the kids hangout house and to host charity functions for the community) but not as big as this one, and certainly not with the same huge gardens. 3 days before we made our final offer (over asking price because the owner is a bit off her rocker as to the value of the realestate) on the other house DH asked me (as he has dozens of timess) do you think we should call the James house and ask if they would consider selling. I told him, no they won't sell, we've asked before. But to humor him, just before I faxed in the offer I called and asked for what I hoped was the last time. She had decided to sell three days earlier so that she can work full time for a non-profit community foundation she's started! We flew down, walked through it and struck a deal over coffee at the local deli.

It's much more house than we had planned on but it's history is so fabulous. It became a private hospital after Mr. James died and has been all kinds of things since. We are looking forward to posting it's history on the web site when it's ours (the previous owner gets to keep it for a year).

We were lucky, because this owner and her partner are wonderful gals. I expect we'll be fast friends. I enjoy chatting with them so much and we love that we're buying under a friendly sale verses what the other place would likely have been.

I'm going to post this and just link to my photobucket account (I think that works but it's a first try for me). There are lots of pics of the house there and I keep losing long posts here because this new computer wipes them off before I hit enter the second time (it's going back tomorrow LOL).

We are feeling somewhat sureal about this purchase. It's a treasure and we're honored and scared chitless about living up to the standards of the house so Mr. James will never regret when "that family" lived there!

Oh, Goodness. I think I've just seen what could be described as Heaven on Earth.

So many wonderful things to look at, but....I love the pot bellied stove, and the FP in the master Suite with the mirrored panel next to it is exquisite in its design and tile work.

And this treasure came with the contents?

You say this will be the first Christmas your son won't be in the hospital, so for that reason + the new home this Holiday Season will indeed be special.

Thanks everyone for all your input. . . you're right Mike, the website Denise posted does have a lot of interesting products. I have no idea how much of this stuff I'm going to need so I ordered 4 bricks. I guess if I need more I'll order it later. . . So. . . no soil at all Denise? I was thinking you used the coir instead of bark like me and so many others do. I would guess with no soil one would have to use some sort of nutrient such as VF-11, just b/c the lack of them in the soil. So, on the average, how often do you water using this type of growing medium. I realize the time of year has a lot to do with the frequency of water, as well as the type of hoya. So, say the average hoya such as pubicalyx, since they seem to grow year round, for me anyway. Speaking of this. . . kinda. . . I got a magazine a few weeks ago that had 4", 6", and 8" white plastic hanging pots that were only .78 cents if you bought 10 or more and shipping was only $5.00. I was going to order 40 of them so I had them when I switched all my hoyas over to coir. Well, we had a superbowl party and I accidently used the magazine to start the firepit. . . I'm so mad. . . And I can't remember the name of the company. . . rrrrrrrg. Anyway, thanks again everyone. . . I'm sure I'll have more questions once the coir get here. Miad~

LOL Mona I have been so busy making floats and costumes this week I didn't see this... I did post the story back in December (when it happened) but it seems to have gone the way of most posts of old. So sit down....this is a cut and paste I saved...and please remember, I can hear someone call me an idiot from several miles away so be nice...LOL (could be I just hear voices...) Ok: From Dec 09 Ok I've got to record my new house experience for prosperity (because I haven't figured out how to Blog yet...but that's a different subject). We moved in Nov 11th or so (ex husband's birthday...excellent day to buy a new house cooler than his) Where was I? Ok so we all have new house stories, especially those of us dumb enough to buy a new old house (that's pretty much all of us here right?) Here's mine.... DH leaves town, as he's often known to do, leaving me at home in the new place, which we've been in for ohhh about a month. It's a frigid cold night, perfect night for a cocktail party fund raiser (the pipes froze at the fund raiser so people left fairly quickly after their first couple of drinks were "processed" since they didn't have bathrooms we could use). I gussied up for this cocktail party (my first in the new town) after spending the entire day with movers. Six of the big burley guys, lovely souls, nosey as all get out, but lovely. Full of hints on how to take of the grand old house and it's garden. We have nine doors to the outside world in this house. All nine were open at one time or another during the move. At one point I found strangers wandering around on the second floor looking for someone to book a room for them (we haven't taken down the Inn sign because it has electronics in it and we're stupid). So...where was I? Oh, tottering home from the short cocktail party, I smacked mom with a big kiss and sent her on her way, thanking her for babysitting our darling son. He and I adjourned for the rest of the evening with the cat and the most annoying dog on this planet to the play room in the basement. A glass of wine later, nearing ten o'clock DS and I head up the stairs to go to bed. Stupid dog, we'll call him stupid to protect his identity, runs up the stairs barking his freaking head off (as usual) and as he speeds by me I hear the sound of a toilet on the top floor flushing....and the dog goes silent, disappearing up the stairs on the second or third floor. I pause, given that I've not flushed the toilet myself, and we should be alone in the house, and call for the dog, just a tad bit nervous...we've been here a month mind you, and toilet flushing sounds haven't been noted in that time frame. Well I've got a four year old, and it's been hell keeping him alive so far, the dog won't answer me, and won't bark (highly unusual) and the cat has taken to hiding under the dining room table. Deciding that caution is probably the right approach here, I loudly say to DS that we have to get a bottle in the kitchen, (distracting the house breaker who is absentminded enough to flush a toilet) and then drag DS out by the skin of his teeth once we hit the kitchen; locking myself and said child in the gardeners cottage behind the house. I call 911 and say I believe I "MIGHT" have someone in the home, but am new to the house so it could be an error because I don't know it's sounds yet, but could they send over a couple of guys to maybe do a quick walkthrough and check it out for me given I have the small child with me. Surely ma'am they'll respond and within seconds, really, quite lovely response, an officer and his partner show up. They tuck us back into the gardeners cottage and one guards us as the other heads to the door closest to him. Stepping in he yells some police stuff and BANG off go all the lights. I looked at my phone and see quickly it's ten oclock on the nose....I open the cottage door to tell the officer that the lights have gone off because they're on a timer that we do not know how to locate, and as such, haven't been able to change itÂs shut off time, but not to worry, it's normal for us to wander around the house blindly after ten....but he growls "Stay safe, get back inside" Well the man is huge, and he's carrying a very large gun...and when large men with large guns tell me to shut up and go in the house...the strong woman in me turns into a small 3 year old and I got my arse back in the house Seconds later (really quite impressive response time again) a dozen or so guys with BIG guns swarm the property. They enter all doors at once, yelling something about coming out with your hands up and making your presence known...I swear I almost came out of the cottage but the big dude was still there. I swear I could see two of our local deer in the garden standing on two legs with their front hoofs up to the sky....these guys are seriously scary when they mean business. They swarm over the house for about half an hour (I did call 911 back and tell them about the light issue while waiting) and then determine that all is clear. At this point the prettiest police man in America comes to the cottage door and tells me all is well. Seriously I didnÂt care what he was saying, I just wanted to suck in my gut and comb my hair.... Lovely man, really aren't all men in uniform lovely, but this one....if I had a sister (I'd give her my husband and kidnap this gu...umm never mind that thought) he politely tells me all is well, and offers to escort me to the house with DS while I go calm the damn dog down (he's crouched in a ball under the bed whimpering like a coward, still not barking). And then he casually mentions....he sort of had a feeling he knew "Who" the intruder was, but wanted to be sure, hence the response (that and perhaps they haven't had a swat team call in say 20 years given the sleepy town we're in)....you see , he tells me, there were two sinks left running on the third floor and it was the water clearing the drains that I heard as I climbed up the stairs....not an absent minded criminal or lost houseguest from earlier in the day, not an evil mover intent on taking one of the 500 boxes all labelled "kitchen" (though none of them are in the kitchen) back to keep for himself....a sink drain....thank god it was dark...how embarrassing!!! I'm a sensible woman dang it....I don't call the police if the drains are clearing....ok I didn't use to anyhoo. Now kids, I don't leave the water running, which is why I wasn't expecting to hear water coming down said drains...and I had never heard it before. Either Mom* or the movers turned the water on to protect my little hiney so the pipes wouldn't freeze because they appear (in those two rooms) to be on an outside wall (they're not, but no one asked). I had to bake a lot of apology cookies for the police dept the next day and DS still asks if his friends (he really liked the big guys with big guns) are coming back soon. Some day I'm going to run into one of them and have to pretend IÂm not me, as it's still too embarrassing of a story to share locally...though given the sleepy town, I do expect it will make the paper soon...I'm not buying it (the paper, itÂs a rag) so I'll never know. Next time I hear an invisible, absent minded burglar, axe murderer, etc, on the floor above where we are...I'm going to go clear the house myself....and I'm not sending the dog up to save my hiney first....better a quick end than having to face the lovely SWAT team commander again because my water is running in the restroom sink! This is a totally normal thing for new home ownerÂs right? P The only plus to the embarrassing story is that the dog didn't bark for 24 hours after the incident and apparently the deer were scared to death by the screaming men with big guns because they didn't return to the yard for a week I'm actually thinking it might be worth having them back occasionally...for tea....or just to scream and wave their guns around to scare off the wildlife (the real stuff not the ones I imagined were flushing toilets). I did mention the dog's name is killer right? Grrrrrr he's scary huh?

Hey girl! I posted a few times for you in conversations but knew that if you had time you'd pop in so I just started crossing toes and fingers and saying loads of prayers that all would turn out fine. Isn't it amazing how you think you've hit rock bottom and then the floor starts to fall out beneath you again and suddenly there's a new "low" for rock bottom?? Those are the days when I just didn't have my sense of humor and got conditioned to wait for the other shoe to fall - the hardest part is that at the center of it all is our little guys - would be easier if it were us, you know? OH how reading your post made me want to reach out and hug you! Thank goodness that all the ugly possibilities have been ruled out but I'm sure you want an answer more definitively than what you've got. I hope you don't leave the program until you feel certain that you can continue things outside of that environment - I learned my lesson once by taking a discharge before *we* were ready and I'll never do that again! SOOOO, heading up to Du...ummmm MN, eh? Did you secure (purchase/put under contract/etc) the house or not? You have to tell more details when you can! Can't wait to see more pics of ALL your projects - as much joy as they give you (and us!) don't forget what an amazing job you're doing in the hardest job in the world - mommy. I don't know if this helps or makes it more confusing. I know I rencently said that's what Igloo used. I guess I was wrong. ? Her clipping say... I only use high quality nylon (Purdy) brushes. I prefer them for wood finishes. They cost more but they last forever! I did have the primer tinted, and tinted it's kind of light purple color LOL so it looks funny until you start putting more paint on. They hate tinting it, but make them do it anyhoo! Don't let anyone talk you into anything different (they always try to with me and it's never worked out). This is exactly what I use: Primer Sherwin Williams PrepRite ProBlock Interior Exterior Seals and Bonds, Latex primer (it's the most expensive...but if you don't like sanding or using chemicals to prep, this is the stuff for you!). I've never had to sand or strip first using this on the worst shiny stuff. Paint Sherwin Williams Exterior All Surface Glass Enamel Code IFC411X Woodsy Brown 100% mix formula 2924 (color code) They use Acrylic Latex HIGH GLOSS Ultradeep base 6403-25932 Code A41T00204 Do not take a less glossy finish. This finish dries HARD and rich :) (There's a man joke in there somewhere but I'll avoid making it) I use one coat primer and let it dry a day at least, then two coats (one day between at least) of paint with a good Purdy brush (which is important). With just one coat the grain still effects the paint, but with the two on top of the primer you get that nice smooth look :) I'm a paint freak, so forgive me for saying this if you know. Don't use rollers for wood. I like a 1 1/2 inch and a 2 1/2 or 3" brush at the most. The smaller works well on the small areas so you don't drip or oversmear the sides of the project."

Thank you all :) We're so excited about it! It's been our dream to own a wonderful historic home for quite some time so to actually see its come true is pretty special :)

I want a home our son will always think of as "home"

And yes the beds, but maybe not breakfast will always be open to GWebbers LOL (I'm a lousy breakfast cook but I can visit a bakery like nobody's business!)

LOL deedee he's not a chewer thank god...but those fabulous drapes in the parlors (between the rooms) are coming down pretty darned quick. They're as old as the house and I'm worried they can't stand up to the dog, cat and the worst...the 4 year old!

Well Igloochic, you are really important news in the Leader today. Front page (2/3rds of it) and 1/2 of page 2.I bet you get some space in the Port Angeles (the other paper for the area) also. I am only laughing ,because when goodwill opened, and the mayor cut the ribbon that only got a colum on page 2., and as you can see it is a small town indeed.

Something needs to happen in the kitchen... Great pill box toilet! I know where you can buy parts for it (or even another one)! Yes, the heavy drapes must come down, STAT! LOL! Hope you like throwing money at houses. I've been throwing money at my old house for years. Seems sorta like painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Just when you finish, it is time to start over. It is never ending.

"How big is the garden?" Heh heh too big!!! (See post on how to pare down the garden.) The house is on 1/4th of a block (typical of the time) and takes up exactly half of that space. The garden is equally as big. I think its 50'x100' (garden alone).

Mom, gad that article made me sound like sarah palin...it's so inaccurate (when did I live in Chimacum?) etc. I'm giving the other newspaper an interview just to correct the one printed. And I'm furious they printed the little guys name after being told not to. Grrrr But as long as you're happy :oP

Goldie, funny thing about that toilet...have you ever seen my powder room here? I have the same toilet heh heh Mine is reproduction (Mac's plumbing I think).

I'm going to actually reproduce the drapes in modern materials while the antiques are cleaned and stored for future use (like when my children grow up, the dog dies and I'm so freaking old I've forgotten where they are stored).

Isn't that kitchen a hoot. It's actually just a sink right now. We'll put a lacanche in the nook (that was where the servants stairs were by the way)It has the correct appearance for the age of the home but is still great to cook on. The antique stove will remain as it's original and I think it's kind of cool :)

But that must wait until more lucritive days...until then, we'll be cooking on the back porch :) But I think we can deal with the primitive conditions by just wandering out into the parlors heh heh

By the way mom...smooches...I love you! (We're excited about moving our DS down to be closer to grandma).

I just now had time to look at all of the photos. WOW! I think it is even better than the first B&B- it seems to be lighter and airier! the gardens and the view - swoon...

Sue you described the difference perfectly. The other place was lovely and would have been wonderful but with all of the 1980's horrific flowers it was heavy and overwhelming. They were on the ceilings of the rooms and the walls!!!! This house had it too, but the old owners (since we're now the new by 24 hours LOL) have done much of the work to remove it.

I'll feel like the dream came true maybe after a few nights there. I still don't feel like it's "our" house and probably won't until I sort of make it ours :) A few thomas the train's placed on the elegant furnishings might help LOL

LOL Sue Umm I gotta check, I think there is one in the basement as well and if my memory serves me right the sofa in the gardners cottage folds out...I can make it work LOL Now so as not to confuse my spouse, I'll need ya'll to look like you work in the oil business...(the key would be to carry an IPhone as if it's your first born, and look around like you're confused how you got where ever you are constantly).

I keep looking at all the pics, too. So wonderful and such a change from Alaskaland. I think it would be so fun to totally change decorating styles (but not right now.) I will watch you and pretend it is me (on the good decorating days.)

Also, I can pretend to be an oil geek so I will see you next week. Cottage sofa is fine. Sue, I should be ready about 4:ooish.

Well Igloo- Since you can't really do any major work until after your big sleepover next week that gives you a little time to reflect. Other than the lakeside location and the Moose that used to mosey by your window, what will you miss the most about Alaska and your home there? Or will you keep it as a get away retreat? I know you just finished a major remodeling there, well I guess if I remember correctly from your other posts you had 2 remodels going.
So now you're embarking on another major transition and I wonder what your thoughts are?

I am toying with an antique train car (you know those old private cars they did at the turn of the century) for DS' room. It has to be somewhat historically reasonable (we now have a responsability to the hosue I'm pressured with) so no monkey rooms.

McMamn....we'll be keeping the lake house. DH will be traveling back and forth for work and we'll plan on spending our summers in alaska.

You know, it's funny how you reflect. I'm down to my last few days for a while here at the lake house and I'm sad. I am leaving my network, my "people" as few as they are since DS has been ill...and I'm actuallty very sad and incredibly nervous about the whole endeavor. I am of course excited, how could you not be, about the new place, but there is this underlying fear.....I expect it's going to be a bit of a lonely life for a while when DS and I move in. We know no one (but mom who we adore) so he has no friends and the few who have stuck with me here since DS has been born are special. I will miss them more than I can possibly say.

So I'll throw my life into the new place and hope to find my dear darling son some new friends. He's BEYOND excited about moving near grandma. And honestly, I am too :) (Don't tell...I'm far too old and far too cool to say I miss my mommy) heh heh

Just two sleeps away. We have a dinner party tomorrow (following tonights) for DS for his birthday. Then monday then we are off to our new adventure. Can you imange some dork who would actully worry about moving into that lovely home???????? I'm the dork LOL

Your feelings are very valid, I can understand what you are going through.
of course you are not a dork, just human and feeling the transition, bittersweet I guess.

Once you're there, you'll look forward and not behind; you are saying goodbye to your old environment and that can be hard.

Nervous? You? If one can gauge your confidence by your resourceful remodeling or your willingness to take on a new endeavor such as this historic home then you're not lacking in either fortitude or ability. Just think of the daunting medical hoops you've negotiated dealing with your son's illness.

How wonderful that you'll be closer to your Mother. That's one of the things I missed most about moving so far from home when I married. We just couldn't get together for family birthdays or holidays. We relocated again a month before my daughter was born and it was lonely that first summer. I had many misgivings about the wisdom of the move. My husband went off to work every day and I had 3 kids under the age of 5 and a home that needed lots of updating. But then my son started kindergarten and I met lots of Mom's and found babysitters which gave me some free time to volunteer at school and get involved in the community.

You'll quickly create your own niche and soon you'll be part of the fabric of PT. How fortunate you are that you didn't have to haul all of your belongings from Alaska to PT! or empty out all the closets!

Suffice it to say that I fully understand that comment. It really hit home, even after all these years. Our last child was born almost 24 years ago, but that was after 13 1/2 weeks of bed rest. After he was born there were some other health issues. People have a way of disappearing when someone isn't fun anymore, and it really hurts, especially if you have been there for them.
You have a lot of spiritual support here. And you already know that you and your family are the absolutely perfect new stewards of your new home. Enjoy!

Iggy you are just having cold feet. Don't forget you are living in the west full of very friendly folks ( not reserved like here in the east)- you will probably meet so many neighbors as soon as you move in! And never underestimate the power of Mom! You know she has friends with kids and grandkids ! I imagine she has quite the social schedule for you and J. already set up!
it is gonna be so great! yah I better drive, KK probably drives slow. LOL and ya know if we could we really would.
