IGLOOCHIC---The Painter is coming tonite--what do I tell him?

I think we never finished our conversation about the SW paints--the high gloss conversation, etc. The painter is coming this evening, although he usually uses BM paints, I know he also will use SW if I tell him that is what I want.

Silly me, you have no idea what I'm talking about...do you?

Painting the 2 story foyer, high gloss dark color on the ceiling.

Do I need to request he use a special primer? Or can he just start with the high gloss enamel paint right over the ceiling paint that is there?

Also, can you double check the cans of paint you had left over? SW doesn't have anything with the word "glass" in it, they have "gloss".

Sorry for my little bit of panic, but I cannot send him away today with any wishy washy directions. I need details. And he is a very very good painter, been doing this for a long time. Perhaps he has even done this high gloss on a ceiling thing before. Who knows.

Holy cow. I do remember and I'm so sorry I forgot. I am just getting ivermectin a little walking phenomia (which I can't spell) and my brain was barely working last week!

I would suggest a coat of primer to seal the surface and help adhesion of the shiny top coat. I only say this because ive always primed with this paint so I know how it turns out when you prime first. Given you are going dark, I ask them to tint the primer as dark as they can (it comes out a little. Like a musty purple). So for primer I use

All Surface Enamel Latex primer

It sticks to anything and blocks anything that might want to come through from the old finish. I only use this primer and don't recommend any others as it's always been the best base for the finish coat I like.

So the top coat (paint) I use is now called

ProClassic Interior Acrylic Latex.

Again don't let them talk you out of this for another because this is the best paint on the planet. I use the "gloss" sheen for the look I want and what you are after. Anything less won't give you the rich gloss you want. You often don't see this paint out on display because it's in their professional line so it's behind the counter.

Again I'm sorry. I'm so excited you are doing this! I can't wait to see the results!!!!!!

I love it when people do stuff that is unusual with paint. I'll have to post my gold metallic ceilings sometime. Heh heh. They might be right up you alley!

Igloo, did you always use this? Did I buy the wrong paint for my bathroom cabinet? I thought it was the All Surface Enamel Latex Base paint.

Wow, I hadn't realized there were other replies after I posted a couple wks ago. I only came back to check now to rehash my decision. Because no...I still don't know what I'm doing :( I'm literally past obsessing about it. And moved on to being plain, ol' DEPRESSED over it. So much so, that I booked a flight to CA for Feb 26th, so I could go to Ikea and just waste some money on accesories. And NOT paint! At the time, I decided to just put glass in the doors, open up the other couple. Try to find something I really liked to go over the cabs. Nice rug, some under cabinet lighting, and call it a day. But, dh and everyone else knows that would only make me happy for about a wk. So, we're painting. What color? Well, we'll decide that when the guy comes for the doors :( Seriously, I'm just going to flip a coin. Last night I was set on all white. Figured adding some other color in a rug, painting the inside of the glass cabinets green, and adding other stuff wouldn't make it look so sterile. But, that darn floor and the white appliances keep staring at me. I could happily do white cabs if appliances were SS. OR..if the floor was wood. But, having both things against me. I've yet to EVER clip and save a kitchen with light tile, and white appliances. There's a reason for that. I don't like the look ! The black..sigh. I love black. But, since my first post I've changed out my living room quite a bit. It's taking on a lighter tone. And I worry the black is too heavy with it. I've had visions again of going green/gray on the bottom. Dh doesn't want to for resale. And because of how he thinks it'd look against the Lenox Tan paint on the walls. Blue, I love the color you've done! I can totally see doing something like that to work WITH what I have. Not against it. But, again..the paint throughout the whole space would be hard to work with. Dh suggested maybe going with the wall color, at half strength..for the lowers. White uppers. OR..back to black lowers. It's quite obvious I'm all over the map still. And am thankful for all the snow. So, my painter can't get started yet :( Here's my living room. Right off the kitchen. I need to make things flow. And I pretty much stink at this whole decorating thing, so it's a struggle!

Wow - I’m not even sure where to start . . . I was going to try to stay above the fray but when accused of intentionally scamming or cheating a contractor - I can't resist commenting. For starters, can you just imagine what would have transpired if I’d asked the painter and the fabricator to come together to discuss who was responsible for the granite breaking? The painter, I’m certain, would have washed his hands of the whole thing the very minute it was even suggested that the granite wasn’t properly installed. And the fabricator would have insisted that he installed it properly and dare us to prove otherwise. And once both of those parties denied any culpability, we, the homeowners, would have been left with no recourse at all. The MIA standards are ambiguous at best. They provide a guideline for installation and suggest remedies in various situations, i.e. shims to mitigate cabinets that are unlevel, etc., based upon a fabricators assessment of what's needed - which is totally subjective. There are “tolerances” for everything so that a “range” of conditions is considered acceptable, which would make it nearly impossible to "prove" an improper installation based upon them. They also speak at length about “stones of lesser soundness” due to fissures, hardness of the mineral matrix (whatever that is), etc. Our friends just installed Cosmos granite and were told to NEVER stand or sit on it due to its large mineral deposits and overall fragility, although I assume it was properly installed. Someone here on Gardenweb even posted that her granite cracked because she used her crockpot on it - was that a result of improper installation? Given the nature of stone, you simply cannot say that a properly installed granite countertop cannot be damaged “except with a sledgehammer” and there’s also no way you can say, sight unseen, that our granite broke due to improper installation. We look at it as iroll said - the painter’s crew damaged it - nothing more, nothing less. It wasn’t broken when they arrived and it was broken when they left so we simply cannot be made to feel guilty for holding them responsible. We also did everything we could to make sure our painter didn't have to pay any more than was necessary. When the original invoice the fabricator sent was for $2034 and included an $848 upcharge for the exotic stone, we spent half a day arguing that we'd already paid the upcharge for that slab when we originally purchased a small piece of it. They didn't agree and were adamant that the upcharge was valid, saying they'd only charged us a premium for the small piece we used, but we finally convinced them to remove it. So in essence, I guess you could say the fabricator and the painter are sharing the cost of replacing our granite - one paying $1186 and the other $848.

Oceanna, in Ky the painters are outrageously high, as they are everywhere else, I suspect. Any estimates we've ever gotten have been based on the job rather than by the hour. Personally I am not a very fast painter, so I guess I would probably be making about $2 an hour! LOL. My hubby is somewhat faster, but less picky about straight lines, lap marks, etc. We got an estimate recently for $2400 that we thought was way high for the work to be done. It included walls and ceiling of utility room (14x8) for $300, ceiling of kitchen (13x14) for $200, garage walls & ceiling $450. Luckily we used the painter that dh uses for the rental houses at a much lower rate. He estimated $900-$1100 for a couple weeks work, not by the rooms. Thank goodness for that because I've had him painting about every door, baseboard, crown moulding and trimwork, plus almost every ceiling in the house! He hasn't completely finished yet, but has worked about 3 weeks and taken draws of $1000 thus far. DH tells me to pay him whatever he asks cos he's always been fair with his price. I know he works at lightning speed with almost perfect technique. If you enjoy painting, it sounds like a great way to make some extra $. Whatever estimate your neighbor has gotten, I'm sure you'll come way under that!!

Hi Paintingfool. I've been lurking here for a while & just had to register so I could post on this thread. Paintingfool, I FEEL your pain!!!! I mean literally! Almost 30 years ago I had a terrible bout with kidney stones. At the time I was a hairdresser working everyday in the shop. I never knew when the "pain" would hit, but when it did, it floored me. Naive and young, I had no idea that the reason my urine (sorry if this is too gross) was brown was because my kidney was bleeding from the stone. (I thought I was drinking too much Coke) I asked my gynecologist during a regular checkup what he thought the "pain" could be & he said I was just ovulating! So, to make a long story short, I refused to go to a doctor when these attacks would hit. And I'm sure YOU know what kind of pain I'm talking about. I had had 2 large babies & believe me 24 hours of labor didn't even come close to this pain. After keeping my poor husband up all night & becoming sick on a ladies trip, he (my husband) called off work & MADE me go to a doctor. Well....he (a general practitioner) diagnosed me with iritable colon & treated me for the next 6 weeks. (never even took a "collection" at any dr. visit) Finally, after a rather bae attack & going back to that dr., he took a urine sample. I'm telling you, I can still remember how white his face was when he came into the examing room! He sent me right then to a urologist who after tests found a stone the size of a half dollar. He thought that it had probably been there around 7 years! (I have a very high pain threshold). Needless to say, I ended up having a 6 hour surgery which required me to be literally cut in half. End of story? No....the very next year I started having the pain again. I rushed right to the doctor who after a routine KUB xray came in & gently took my hand to inform me that another large stone had formed. I couldn't believe it!!!! My sister was getting married the next week & I was not only the matron of honor, but I was baking the cake & my son was the ring bearer! It was a large wedding, so I went on those noce strong meds that you were talking about & made it through. The second surgery didn't go so well. He said that my kidney had become calcified & he wasn't sure if it would function again. I went home 2 weeks later with a nefrostomy (sic) tube & bag & thanked God he created us with 2 kidneys! :-) As it was, I ended up back in the hospital with a staff infection & was finally released on Thanksgiving day. By Christmas my kidney had started back up & he was able to remove the tube. Once I was all healed up, my doctor sent me to Michael Reese Hospital's Renal Center in Chicago to have a complete study made. It was concluded that my stones were calcium oxalate & I ended up with 2 new meds that I am still taking every day religiously, and a brand new lists of foods to avoid. I was also told to drink a gallon of water a day. (that's twice as much as a normal person should drink). He said that because I am an active somewhat hyper person, I get wrapped up in activities (at that time it was styling hair & decorating cakes) that I don't get hydrated enough to keep the kidneys washed out. Now it is painting, just like you.....which is why I went into this LONG and probably boring story. From one artist to another (who has experienced what you have ;-) ), I can't stress enough to always keep a bottle of water beside the paint & brushes.....and I don't mean to rinse the brushes with! LOL Drink! Drink! Drink! Sorry if I bored anyone. I just had to give you my support.

sheesh--me too! I even have the sample chart of the enamel paints---The All Surface Enamel ones.

Igloo? Why did we think this? Maybe because this is "out front" the store? I hope you pop back in here to clarify!

I don't know if this helps or makes it more confusing.

I know I rencently said that's what Igloo used. I guess I was wrong. ? Her clipping say...

I only use high quality nylon (Purdy) brushes. I prefer them for wood finishes. They cost more but they last forever! I did have the primer tinted, and tinted it's kind of light purple color LOL so it looks funny until you start putting more paint on. They hate tinting it, but make them do it anyhoo!
Don't let anyone talk you into anything different (they always try to with me and it's never worked out). This is exactly what I use:

Primer
Sherwin Williams PrepRite ProBlock Interior Exterior Seals and Bonds, Latex primer (it's the most expensive...but if you don't like sanding or using chemicals to prep, this is the stuff for you!). I've never had to sand or strip first using this on the worst shiny stuff.

Sherwin Williams Exterior All Surface Glass Enamel

Woodsy Brown 100% mix formula 2924 (color code)
They use Acrylic Latex HIGH GLOSS Ultradeep base 6403-25932

Do not take a less glossy finish. This finish dries HARD and rich :) (There's a man joke in there somewhere but I'll avoid making it)

I use one coat primer and let it dry a day at least, then two coats (one day between at least) of paint with a good Purdy brush (which is important). With just one coat the grain still effects the paint, but with the two on top of the primer you get that nice smooth look :)

I'm a paint freak, so forgive me for saying this if you know. Don't use rollers for wood. I like a 1 1/2 inch and a 2 1/2 or 3" brush at the most. The smaller works well on the small areas so you don't drip or oversmear the sides of the project."

Sorry girls...yes they changed the names (and the "glass" was a typo).

The sales guy told me that the names were too close to other paints in their line and it was confusing to clients so they renamed a few products (mostly in the professional line).
