Can someone explain Linkedin?

I occasionally get requests from people to be linked in to them. I understand the concept of professional networking, and this seems to be the on-line version of it.

A part of professional networking is a numbers game - the more people you know, the better chance of knowing someone who can help you. But some part of professional networking also has to do with having a good reputation and knowing the person you are networked with.

Is Linkedin just a numbers game? Everyone who has thus far sought me out via Linkedin - I wouldn't know these people if I passed them on the street. Why would I want to be linked to them? Why would they want to be linked to me?

Graywings I agree with you. I am on LinkedIn and do not accept invitations to link unless I know and respect the inviter. You can decline or ignore the invitation-if you do this the reminders about the invites stop. I think it does become a numbers game for some people, I don't want to play.

IMO your LinkedIN network is of greatest value if you participate on the forums on LinkedIN. I admin one of the forums called Color & Paint Professionals - International which is a "closed" group but I let anyone who asks in; it's closed just so I can review profiles before clicking them in. Also admin the IACC/NA group which is a totally closed group exclusively members only.

So while I do have connections from in real-life in my network, there are also the folks I know via the LI and other online forums and groups.

It's useful because my connection's activities are displayed on my main LI front page feed so I can keep track of what's going on within my entire network at any time on one page. See something interesting, I can follow them on to their facebook page, their Twitter or to the forum(s) where they are posting on LI.

Once you peel into it, you see how LI organizes your connections by their profession and you are then able to focus and channel what you want to actually *do*, how you want to engage and/or follow your entire network.

For example, all the color trend people I'm connected with are members of two or three core LI Forums 100% focused on trends so I can find them there and get quick updates.

Lots of other ways you can use LI, that's just one example. From a social media perspective, LI, is one of THE most powerful sand boxes to play in.

Actually, if you learn one color system - the language of just one color system - it's not hard to figure out all the other ones. The one to learn is Munsell. Albert Munsell is my favorite old dead guy. We share the same birthday but that's not the only reason he's my favorite. Al was a teacher and his motivation for creating his system was color education for elementary school children. What that means is you don't even have to be smarter than a 5th grader to figure out how the Munsell Color System works. I recently wrote an article about the absurd state of retail paint stores and how manufacturers market color. In the article I ask readers to imagine walking into a department store to buy an outfit: shirt, jeans and shoes. Everybody can relate to that, right? Now imagine that there are no tags on anything. No labels sewn into the collar of the shirts or seams of the jeans. No sizes imprinted on the bottom of the shoes. No clues whatsoever about sizes or prices. The only way you're going to be able to find a complete outfit it to start trying stuff on. You have to start by searching out a shirt that "looks like" it might fit. Try it on and when it doesn't fit, your only option is to keep trying on shirts; comparing each one to the one before that didn't fit. Then you have to do the same to find a pair of jeans. Then you have to do the same to find a pair of shoes. How long do you think it would take you to find an outfit that fits? How long do you think it would be before you got totally frustrated, confused, and exhausted by the process. How long before you said "this is crazy, I'm outta here!"? No one in their right mind would shop at that store. They'd find a department store where all the items had labels and price tags. Substitute color notations for labels and this is exactly the situation in paint store world right now. Some stores have paint brands that have notations. And some do not. Sounds half hopeful, right? Not so fast. Sadly, the people who own/work in the paint stores that do have brands with notations have not one fat clue their brand has a color system loaded behind it - let alone what to do with the actual notation. So, unfortunately, @williamsem nailed it. Most people are left with aimlessly combing through chips and sticking with the company with the chip you like. Bonne chance my colorful friends. P.S. Why does it bother you Soph? I'm not expressing anything besides theres a thousand and one other things I prefer to spend my money on. Generally, Ive found that simple technical questions don't usually require a photo. It would be helpful though to know exactly what product was first applied and what product(s) she is now trying to use . Can this b e deciphered by looking at a photo? Maybe, maybe not. Sure, post a photo but this woodworker/refinisher would still want to know the specifics re products that were used.

Well I want to do lighting under the cabinets too because theres no way an overhead light could light the countertops that are under the cabinets. So then its just a matter of nice even light throughout the room which is about 9 x18- not quite a galley kitchen but close. Maybe the track light in my situation could be thought of as an alternative to doing can lights - ie just a way of spreading the light out more evenly throughout the room vs 1 central fixture. So what kind of track head is going to give me that kind of light? Is the above sample supposed to give more of a spot light effect vs. the ones that have glass. or maybe I want one of those LED low profile lighting panels - if I can find one thats long enough and narrow. Why do you want to replace it? You describe it as working properly. If you are looking for the receptacle that it's supposed to control, the problem is at the receptacle. Look for the one with a red insulated wire connected to one gold screw and a black insulated wire connected to the other gold screw. Then break off the tab that connects the two screw plates and the switch will control that half of the receptacle. If it's another problem, please post back with details. BTW, that's 14 gauge wire so the circuit must be limited to 15 amps. Also, I avoid using back-stab devices such as that switch due to their inherent tendency to fail, but that's another story.

The reason you don't know a lot of these people from Adam is because when they sign up, Linkeden goes in a pulls all the email addresses that have been associated with that email address and invites them. I seldom erase any emails from one address I have and I often get requests from people who emailed me once years ago.

I'm not sure if they do it automatically or if the person signing up misreads the permission request, but like all the other networking sites, Linkeden can be very invasive.

Thank you, lukkiirish, that may explain what is happening with me, especially if the other person uses gmail.

My gmail account adds everyone I have ever exchanged e-mails with to a Contacts list. If I signed on to LinkedIN, hundreds of people who don't remember me would get an invitation.

Funcolors, thanks for your explanation as well. I didn't realize there were other aspects to LinkedIN.

I use it all the time--to track down someone who can help me in my work or supply a referral. As a freelancer, I'm always looking for materials my clients may need, etc.

Your welcome, glad it helped. As you can see by the experiences both Funcolors and Ideefixe have shared, these networking sites can be great tools, but I have serious concerns when it comes to privacy issues.
