Charlies soap price increase....

I'm sure all of us who buy from them got the email...but for those considering a purchase, prices are going up on Monday NEXT week... March 28 (?? don't have a claendar with me!)

So... if you were considering a purchase it might be worth doing it this weekend!

Email did not indicate how much prices would go up, just that they were going up!

Yeah Im pondering ordering up a 1280 load size.

Already have a tub of the Sears stuff, but only 2 uses of the Charlies stuff made even my washer seem cleaner. At least the Sears stuff is powder, but I dont want to see a massive price increase on Charlies if I can avoid it!

Wonder if I can craigslist the remaining sears stuff (there is a lot left) :)

To those of you who have been using these "home made" detergents, are you experiencing any odor, mold or mildew issues? The reason I ask is because castile soap builds up into a gooopy, gel-like gunk if not properly rinsed. This could potentially cause problems in washers. Every home-made product I've tried - from detergent to fabric softener - has proven unsatisfactory. Either the products don't clean well, they risk building up in my machine or on my clothes or they just don't work. Price is not the only consideration, which is what appears to be driving this homemade laundry movement.

They may be fluffier, but are they clean? I donÂt know about CharlieÂs Soap, but I recently tried the Seventh Generation powdered detergent on the basis of a recommendation from another post. I had a pair of white shorts that had a grass stain from mowing the lawn. The Seventh Generation failed to get it out. Thinking that I might not have used enough, I rewashed the shorts in another load and upped the dose. It still didnÂt get it out. Inasmuch as the Seventh Generation detergent has oxygen bleach and enzymes in it, I would expect the CharlieÂs Soap to have an even more dismal performance because it has none of those things. "Toxic" it may be, but I think IÂm going back to Sears Ultra Plus With OxiClean. It would have removed that grass stain with no trouble. It really is the best detergent IÂve ever used. The idea of green detergents is great, but thereÂs no point to them if they donÂt work.

When mc was having the sudsing problems with the Whirlpool Duet I had suspected it may have been the detergent. I went out and purchased some Tide HE liquid. Upon using it I had the same trouble as mc with oversudsing and the suds not rinsing out. Out of curiosity, I sent Tide an email explaining my problem in detail. I explained that I had purchased Tide HE liquid for my Frigidaire Affinity. Specifically told them the type of machine too. I informed them about the excessive suds, the poor rinsibility, the stiffness and the fact I can not use fabric softener due to having small children and the effects it would have on the flame retardent on their clothes. I explained that due to the liquid formulas concentration, I was unable to cut the amount of liquid used back to a safe level. I even informed them that I had seen others mention similiar problems on the net. I was very nice in my email and this was the response I got. [Incident: 080608-001294] I'm sorry you experienced oversudsing while using our detergent. There are a few situations that can cause this. They include: -- Using too much detergent for the amount of soil in each load. -- Water hardness level. Less detergent can be used in soft water. -- Do you use cold water for most wash loads? You might be experiencing buildup of detergent and mineral deposits in the outside tub of your washer. This can happen when cold water is consistently used for washing. Here's how you can fix that: add 1/2 gallon of white vinegar to a full tub of hot water. Run the washer through a complete cycle without clothing. If this resolves the problem you may want to repeat the process every 6 months. -- Overloading the washer can be a cause. Suds can become trapped in clothing if there's not enough room for them to circulate freely. -- Using regular detergent in a high efficiency washer. If you have one of the new HE washers, make sure you're using HE detergent, like Tide HE. A final word, it isn't unusual to see suds in the sink when the rinse water drains. I find this thread discouraging. I started using Charlie's Soap due to recommendations on this forum, but the vehemence of the opinions here is hard to figure?! Does anyone consider why they have such strong opinions about laundry detergent? Or whether they feel these strongly worded comments are actually helpful to the forum? Clearly, some of the difference with results has to have something to do with the difference in water from one community to another. Hard water, soft water, heavily treated water have to make a big difference in how a detergent works. I have seen a few comments here that point out the basic reasoning that many people had in using Charlie's soap, but it bears repeating. Using a detergent that has fewer harsh chemicals and less negative effect on the environment and the water supply. And the second big reason was trying to escape the overabundance of products that cause reactions to the skin from who knows what ingredients. What I want to use as a laundry detergent, is a product that cleans clothes well but is made from natural ingredients that do not affect the water supply or the environment. And definitely, a product that rinses completely out of the clothes so that there is no residue to sit on the skin and either provoke a reaction or be absorbed into the body. It would be more helpful to me, to read comments from someone who actually knows and understands what is in these competing products and what affect they have on not just cleaning the clothes, but do they affect the environment and do they leave a residue that can cause a problem for the skin? And I'm also trying to avoid fragrances. I really dislike them across the board, unless they are natural fragrances, as in coming from essential oils or something. I don't wear perfume and I find it difficult to spend time in a room with someone who does wear it. Bottom line - this thread did not help me figure out which detergent is going to help me have the laundry experience I am looking for.

Yeah I like the Sears too, but didnt have enough of the Charlies to see if it was better (I only got the 3 pack trial size thing).

Best thing about the Sears stuff is its so readily available, and its one of very few (maybe the only?) HE powder with fabric softener that Ive seen.

Im also thinking about trying the version without FS, to use for things that dont want/need FS (microfiber detailing towels, mostly).

Nope--Charlie's has a better price--at least right now--I don't know about after the price increase. All you have to do is increase the number of bags and you can see the price per bag go down automatically. You can't see the savings unless you change the number, that's all. Try it at the Charlie's website.

hmmm... I am a regular user and did not get their email.
I just bought the 1280 load bucket..thank goodness.
please let me know when you find out..not that I will need to order more any time soon..just curious!

Well... even though I just opened a new 80 load bag last week and still have 2 full bags on my shelf... I did order the bucket yesterday. :-)

Haven't checked today to see what price it is now. I figure I shouldn't need to buy any for a long time now!

went from $121 to $137.32 for the bucket... IIRC the bag of 80 loads went up $1... that is not so bad...

Overall not too bad, now 10.7 cents/load instead of 9.5

But percentage wise its almost a 15% jump.

Last week I had ordered 2 80 wash bags, then got the notice of the price increase and ordered the 5 gallon bucket this weekend.
I want to use only this!! I have the big LG Tromm do I need to use more than the 1 Tbsp?
I am waiting for my other detergent to run out and just use my Charlie's Soap.

one of the scoops from the bag should be plenty.... I actually tend to use less than a full scoop since I know the amount of water it is mixing with is way less than one scoop would be in a tl machine... and that is all you're suppose to use in those too.

Thanks for filling us in, not a bad price increase.. they ship free and no tax.. that's a savings right there . can you imagine how much shipping would be on the bucket..it is pretty heavy!

The bucket is actually 45 lbs. or so...I was surprised that it was THAT heavy. Love the stuff. I'd still use it if it cost more (shhhhhhh....I didn't say that out loud did I?).

You can actually get a rebate by ordering just one additional item. The price for the bucket of laundry detergents goes down to $126 something if you add another item. That is not too bad. I still have about half a bucket of the Sears detergent. I think I will give CS a try when my detergent supply runs out. You guys really seem to like it and it is not much more expensive than the Sears detergent.
Wow, a bucket that big might actually outlast the washer...

I must be doing a lot more wash than you looser...

I go through one of the 80 load bags in about 5 weeks... so I figure the bucket should last me about 1 1/2 years... plus I have those 2 bags on the counter, and the newly opened bag... I should be good for close to 2 years...

My washer better outlast the soap... or DH will be more than upset with me! lol

Yeah. The gentleman I spoke with last month when I ordered the bucket said it would be going up. He said it had to do with the cost of fuel prices going up which makes sense. The fuel prices are effecting everything right now.

yes, you seem to do a lot more laundry than I/we do. We usually do around 5 loads per week. I have been using the Sears detergent (275 loads)since October and I still have more than half a bucket left. I do use just half a scoop for a normal load though.

Are the 1280 loads for the CS based on one scoop per load as well? How much less than a scoop do you actually use?

Ah... you all need a few more children and a couple of puppies! LOL...

I do about 15 loads per week with the fl machine... just think how many that was with the old tl that was NOT large capacity... 20+ years old.."standard" tub maytag... tiny machine... I use to do at least 3 loads per day with that...

I tend to fill the charlies scoop about 1/2 way for all loads, so given I didn't take that into consideration...my numbers were about 1/2 off! guess that means I should be good for 4 years!! I'm feeling better about that!
