Which is a better deal - whole crab or just legs.

I told DS and DH that for Mother's Day I want crab legs instead of going out. I haven't had some in a very very long time. DH said, wouldn't it be a better deal to get the whole crab. I always thought that was a waste because there is so little meat in a whole crab except the claws.

Like I said it has been awhile, so someone tell me which is the better deal?

What kind of crabs - Chesapeake Bay Blue crabs, King crabs, etc., etc?

No, we have Dungeness crabs here, altho out of season, they are available very fresh frozen. Or frozen King crab legs. Clare, to me they are very different. I'll take whole Dungeness crab any day. Can't speak for the value of either, tho. You just look at price per pound and how much it takes to feed the three of you, and o from there. Costco always has the frozen King crab egs, but I've never tried them. Phil's Fish Market has Dungeness crabs, but they are way out of season.

I did make a discovery a few years ago. I started a compost bin at the house my mom and cousin live in for the summers. My cousin is very sensitive to odors and had not wanted to start a compost bin as she was worried about smells from it. Anyway, my uncle went fishing and the "waste" after cleaning the fish got wraped in paper and then sealed in several plastic bags and he threw it in the TRASH!!!! The whole area around the can smelled and had flies big time for a long time after the trash was collected even. The next time a successful fishing trip happened, I wouldn't let them wrap the stuff in plastic for the garbage. I grabbed the paper bundle and headed for the compost bin (was hot according to the thermomiter (150 F) and I dug down into the hot center and put the fishy bundle there. Covered in back up with 18 inches of the hot compost and no nasty fishy smell!!!!!!. After that test, I decided anything organic that could stink should go in a hot compost pile if at all possible! I know burying works for the most part especially if there are no digging creatures around (remember most digging creatures are nocturnal like skunks, possum, and raccoons.) I think that hot compost will convert the "stink" and therefore the animal attracting feature of stuff much quicker than burying as the microbes are far more active in the compost than in the soil. Of course if your compost is not especially hot or good at "not stinking" then burying is probably the better option for you.

Hi Saphire, Very easy for you to say without concrete examples. I can try to post case examples for you as available and permission is granted. I have a significant portfolio of such cases... but I do need to get permission, and then put them in a postable format. May take me a bit, but I *WILL* do it... had been on my list anyway. So assuming I am trading up in value and will be financing 80% (because no one will give me the house at 100% and I do not have enough cash to buy it outright) Do you mean no bank will LEND 100% on that house? Be aware, you ARE financing 100% of the purchase. Apparently you'll be taking 80% from the bank at the cost of their interest charges, and 20% from your family at the cost of the safe returns available. There's no free lunch... ALL of the money comes at a cost, including the money you take away from your family's safety reserves and growth investments. if I buy an expensive house (for me) you are right that this affects my portfolio as a whole so how do I get the least expensive rate or product that also is nbot subject to rate increases if the market changes Fortunately for you, right now the expense premium on longterm fixed loans is very small above the more timeframe realistic 5 and 7 year fixed intermediary programs. You can likely get the risks completely bank-carried at just 1/4% or so above the 5 year terms. I'd suggest being a little 'suspicious' of ol' Mr. Market, however... when Mr. Market makes longterm fixed loan costs extremely attractive relative to shorter term periods, the Market knows that the shorter term programs are more likely to become significantly cheaper as they adjust (thus the "market trickery" to entice the consumer into the more expensive programs permanently.) Without concrete examples or references, either as to stradegies that work or references to formulas or analysis it all sounds very ambigious, mysterious and a bit glib. It certainly takes an open mind for numbers, and the ability to visualize offsetting growth or cost curves. The bases of the entire conceptual issue are; Rates are relative; When costs of borrowing increase, yields on savings/investments increase, and vice versa. Cash Is King; The costs of being illiquid in emergency can be catastrophically worse than the costs of staying liquid (in carrying costs on the leverage to do so,) It is very easy to say a FMR is expensive but without providing either alternatives or examples or references as to why that is so, I have to question it Currently the immediate face costs on a 30 FRM versus (as example) a 5 yr ARM are minimal... very financially unusual, which DOES definitely call for suspicion. The more obscure costs on a Fixed are the ongoing higher carry costs incurred when rates shift to the downside on the loan, but you are stuck at the higher rates unless/until you incur another round of transaction costs to reset the financing. Eliminating uncertainty is more efficiently done by matching income yield instruments (savings & investments) to leverage instruments (mortgages.) Properly placed and managed the spread continually works in your favor, and you remain much safer as you are not locked away from your liquidity. CLEARLY explain how this works or various stragies that might work for a trade up house that is intended to be held indefinitely How long you intend to OWN is irrelevant, (what DOES matter is how long you intend to take to reach financial independence,) but I do have a few cases that reflect the same situation. Cook's did one of their experiments and found that baking the filling made a big difference in taste -- and I agree. This is the best pie outside of Key West I've ever had/made. KEY LIME PIE Serves 8 . Published March 1, 1997. If you prefer a meringue topping, follow the instructions in "No-Weep Lemon Meringue Pie" in the November/December 1994 issue. Bake pie only 7 minutes, then apply meringue gently, first spreading a ring around the outer edge, then filling in the center. Return to oven and bake 20 minutes more. INGREDIENTS Lime Filling 4 teaspoons grated lime zest 1/2 cup lime juice from 3 to 4 limes 4 large egg yolks 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk Graham Cracker Crust 11 graham crackers , processed to fine crumbs (1 1/4 cups) 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 5 tablespoons unsalted butter , melted Whipped Cream Topping 3/4 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar 1/2 lime , sliced paper thin and dipped in sugar (optional) INSTRUCTIONS 1. For the Filling: Whisk zest and yolks in medium bowl until tinted light green, about 2 minutes. Beat in milk, then juice; set aside at room temperature to thicken. 2. For the Crust: Adjust oven rack to center position and heat oven to 325 degrees. Mix crumbs and sugar in medium bowl. Add butter; stir with fork until well blended. Pour mixture into 9-inch pie pan; press crumbs over bottom and up sides of pan to form even crust. Bake until lightly browned and fragrant, about 15 minutes. Transfer pan to wire rack; cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes. 3. Pour lime filling into crust; bake until center is set, yet wiggly when jiggled, 15 to 17 minutes. Return pie to wire rack; cool to room temperature. Refrigerate until well chilled, at least 3 hours. (Can be covered with lightly oiled or oil-sprayed plastic wrap laid directly on filling and refrigerated up to 1 day.) 4. For the Whipped Cream: Up to 2 hours before serving, whip cream in medium bowl to very soft peaks. Adding confectionersÂ sugar 1 tablespoon at a time, continue whipping to just-stiff peaks. Decoratively pipe whipped cream over filling or spread evenly with rubber spatula. Garnish with optional sugared lime slices and serve.

I know EXACTLY what everyone else feels... My reno headaches so far: 1. When moving our new stove and fridge at the SAME time...in my boyfriend's truck (he thinks the Tundra god can do no wrong) the straps holding the fridge in place slipped and the fridge hit the front of the stove. BIG dent...and I was driving... 2. The wall oven cubby hole...great gw's here AGREED with me that that huge cabinet should be recessed or broken up so it doesn't feel weird when you're cooking at the range (besides we won't have a wall oven anymore). DB (boyfriend) didn't like that Idea because it meant more work. After about a week and threatening to stab him in the eye with a pencil i won and of course now he agrees that it's much better. 3. Get appliances in....dent still in stove. Now oven doesn't work because it's not just a dent...but messed up the digital parts, so now on back order for that part...maybe 3-4 more months without an oven...=( 4. The worst part: During demo, the downstairs heating unit went out...which meant we couldn't do the floor, AND 2 days later the well pump went out so no water. I could have pulled my hair out and just died, so after 1200 on the heat unit, and 600 for a new pump we were back in business...until the new pump caused a voltage spike and blew a breaker and we could not find a new box to fit in the same spot.... Now we're finally back on the right track 2 1/2 weeks later..floors down...countertop is getting templated Tuesday. I was so hoping our reno would be done before my dad left for afghanistan for deployment...but he leaves 7am March 3rd and our countertops will not be in then. *sigh* guess he'll see them in 18 months!

I find quite a bit of meat in a whole crab, but the leg and claw meat is best, and the rest of it is a major pain to pick out. I would say go for the King Crab legs - I buy those often, and they are so much easier to use. The last time I was at Santa Monica Seafood Market, I bought crab meat that had already been extracted from the whole crabs, and it was quite a bit more expensive than King Crab legs, but it saved me a lot of work.

I think it depends on what you're having for dinner.

For the crab "experience" then, obviously, you want whole crabs. Cover the table in layers of newspaper & dump the crabs on the table along with fresh corn-on-the-cob & potatoes. Serve bread & a side salad & it's a feast. That's the kind of meal we do here on the east coast. Everybody just grabs what they want & we take a good 2 hours to eat dinner. It's as much about the "experience" as it is the food.

OTOH, if you're wanting something more restrained like a surf 'n turf dinner then I'd go with Alaskan King crab legs...less fuss & less mess.

Sounds like a good meal.

Oh, and Dungeness have a LOT of meat in the body.

I saw Dungeness crabs being sold at the fish market on Santa Cruz wharf. They were advertised as fresh. Must have been fresh frozen. Kind of deceptive.

I grew up in New England so have had the whole lobster experience. I would rather have Lobster Thermidor. And I had the crab experience when I moved to CA. Not wild about all the effort and work. At least you burn off some of the calories. LOL!

I hadn't thought about Surf 'n Turf but I like that idea. So I will get steaks and King crab legs. Yum!

They might still be bringing in crab from up the coast. The season is different at different locations along the coast. A properly frozen one is still awfully good. Phil has a tank of live ones.

Since I haven't have King crab legs in probably 30 years, I think I'll try them when I see them at Costco next.

Well if you decide on buying anything like a Spanish crab "buey del mar" like the ones I bought for the exoskeletal challenge thread then I would warn against opening up the body and trying to find anything useful inside LOL.

What a mess I had for nothing.
There was some meat in the legs but as these weren't Dungeness or any other large type of crab, it wasn't worth prying open the body to look for white meat as there was none. :-(

Lou - As much as I love lobster, and I do, I think I will go with crab legs because I haven't had them in such a long time.

Now I have to decide which steak to buy, Tenderloin, T-bone, Filet Mignon, Porterhouse, Top loin, Rib-Eye or Sirloin. Maybe I should start a new thread. LOL

I'm with Sushipup on the Dungenous Crab compared to the amount of meat there is in Crab Legs.

We stop at the places in Maryland, where they put news papers on the table and
shovel on the Crabs. A lot of fun but a lot of smashing and picking.

How about Whole Crabs steamed , New York Strip and Dungenous Crabs.
Make everyone happy, especially you . It's your day.

On one of my wifes birthday's, I was trying to pick out a card for her.

They all looked good so I bought all of them.
She said what did you do now ?????

You woman just don't appreciate nice things.

PS: If you buy Steamed Crabs be sure the legs are floppy.
If they are stiff they were dead for a while before the were Steamed.

Lou - You bought them all - what a nice DH you are! Though I would have said the same thing. LOL Thanks for the tip on floppy vs stiff. I didn't know that.

Another reason to go with legs. DH just reminded me, DS has a problem with faces on the food he eats. One of his quirks, he has Autism. He doesn't like whole fish, freaks him out to see the eyes staring at him. Once when we got whole lobster, he wouldn't eat it until I went back in the kitchen and removed all the meat so he didn't see the 'body'. I grew up on fish and seafood on the East Coast since a was a little kid and never thought a thing about it.

Question: How much King Crab legs do you buy per person, by weight or by piece?

Steak and king crab legs sounds like a real winner. Here on the East Coast, my favorite crabs are soft shell blues. We're just coming into the season now.

Crab is high on my list of fine foods. However, this thread's question has me stumped. I don't know how to compare the different preparations of one kind of crab, let alone whole vs. legs or one kind of crab vs. another. They all have their gustatory good points. The economics have everything to do with the preparation and serving method.

Steamed blue crabs stand out as my favorite. The recipe starts with "Catch a few dozen large blue crabs..." This is best done with the aid of a bunch of kids and provides a half day of great entertainment as well as cheap food of the best quality. The recipe ends with dumping the spicy steamed crabs in a pile on a newspaper covered picnic table and settling in for a long, lazy, messy session of picking and eating with a cooler full of thirst quenchers.

Buying a bushel of blue crabs, then steaming and serving them the same way, is an option. But you're deprived of half the fun.

Way back when we went Crabing a lot.
And the best part was when I dumped over a bushel of Crabs in the 16 foot boat.
There isn't much room but all 4 of us were Step Dancing.

One of my Favorites is Crabs in Spaghetti Sauce over Pasta.

We used to buy live crab at New Year's Eve and have crab races across the kitchen floor. First one into the pot!!!

But seriously, there is a world of difference in the meat (quantity/where in the body) and the taste between the West coast Dungeness and the East coast soft/blue crabs.

My DIL, a Philly native, can take or leave the East coast crabs but goes wild for the Western Dungeness. If you haven't tasted both, you can't compare the two. King Crab legs are, to my distant memory, more like the Dungeness in flavor. Can anyone else add to my memory?

Never had Blue Soft Shell crabs, always wondered about the taste. I have had both King Crab and Dungeness, but it has been awhile. Maybe I will get both for Mom's Day and do a taste test. I don't think you can get Blue crabs out here in CA.
